System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

”However, based on Mu Nanshu’s assessment of his overall abilities, Brother Zhang seems likely to build the standard model.”

Chen Song slowly nodded and said, ”Let’s just order these first!”

Then, Chen Song, who loves food and dining, shouted, ”Boss, we came here with an empty stomach today, please hurry, or else we’ll faint from low blood sugar.”

Lu Cheng: ”...”

Mu Nanshu’s expression was a bit conflicted, but Chen Song, being a foodie, was always this adorable, so it wasn’t unusual.

When Lu Cheng went to return the menu, Chen Song received a phone call.

Lu Cheng held back what he was about to say and quietly sat down.

Chen Song said, ”Yes, Teacher Xiong, that’s indeed the case. I’m currently collaborating with Dr. Lu Cheng to explore animal applications of this technique.”

”Oh, I see. Teacher Xiong, I’m relieved to hear you say that. Actually, Director Xiang also feels the same way.”

”Clinical work and research are separate, emergency and specialty departments are indeed separate, but they’re not far apart. Whoever can do it should do it, no need to complicate things.”

”Whoever’s not skilled will just have to watch?”

Lu Cheng and Mu Nanshu heard Chen Song’s words and exchanged puzzled looks.

It’s clear that Chen Song and this Teacher Xiong are busy bodies.

”That’s impossible, Teacher Xiong. Our emergency department is a whole, only then do we have departments and emergency departments in the same hospital.”

”If the project has follow-up, I’ll definitely keep you updated promptly, or you can contact Director Xiang. I’m responsible to him.”

”Okay, okay, thank you, Teacher Xiong.”

”Since Teacher Xiong supports me like this, I have only two words: let’s go for it.”

”I knew it; our teachers wouldn’t turn a blind eye.”

”Yes, Dr. Lu Cheng is here too. Yes, he’s eating with me.”

”Alright, sure, if there’s a chance in the future to visit Shanghai, I’ll definitely bring him along to learn from you in person.”

”Thank you, Teacher Xiong, thank you, thank you.”

...

After hanging up the phone, Chen Song grabbed a few peanuts, peeled them, and threw them into his mouth, smirking to himself for a good while.

”This world, some people are quite amusing, seeking help desperately and dialing Teacher Xiong Dansheng from the emergency department.”

”Isn’t that like throwing buns to a dog?”

Lu Cheng and Mu Nanshu didn’t quite understand, or rather, missed the details, so they expressed their confusion to Chen Song.

Understanding their confusion, Chen Song explained, ”The call was from Xiong Dansheng, the director of the Huashan Hospital’s emergency surgery department. Director Xiong is the Associate Chair of the Emergency Branch of Hua Country’s Medical Society.”

”He just told us to go for it, that no one else interfering matters, whether it’s the hand surgery department or general surgery.”

”As long as our project isn’t hindered, it doesn’t matter. If someone does interfere, we’ll deal with them accordingly.”

Lu Cheng rubbed his chin and awkwardly laughed, ”Teacher Xiong is quite bold.”

Chen Song chuckled, ”Our emergency department is a special unit, dealing cleverly with patients, colleagues, and other departments.”

”We handle all sorts of emergencies, and certainly no softies can survive here.”

”Shanghai is an international metropolis, and the emergency department there is mixed with all sorts of people. One must have some attitude to survive.”

Lu Cheng then asked, ”Teacher Chen, how did Director Xiong learn about your relationship with me?”

Chen Song crossed his legs and said, ”This is quite the coincidence. Before I arrived, someone called to curse me.”

”His luck was quite bad, being the seventh or eighth, I forgot, I got tired of being cursed and didn’t bother explaining.”

”So I just cursed him back hard, venting my anger, and he went to complain, conveniently it reached Director Xiong.”

”Director Xiong heard it and then called me, expressing strong support for my work.”

Well, the complainant certainly found themselves in hot water.

After a while, the food was served, and Lu Cheng and the group began eating, talking and laughing, as they had lab work in the afternoon, they refrained from drinking.

...

There was work scheduled, but these tasks were all Chen Song’s. Lu Cheng and Mu Nanshu’s job was to organize and collect data.

The key function of developing a proper surgical technique is its reproducibility.

Meaning, the suturing technique that others can replicate is the truly useful one, more accessible, benefiting more patients.

If only Lu Cheng can perform it, then it’s Lu Cheng’s technical skill.

Therefore, Lu Cheng couldn’t be the only one performing the experimental group.

A better arrangement would be having Lu Cheng perform the control group, with Chen Song doing the experimental group, or both groups simultaneously.

Currently, Chen Song is fully committed to the project with lots of available time, so he’s undertaking both group operations.

Lu Cheng and Mu Nanshu are responsible for all other backend tasks, including but not limited to disinfection, preparing operating tables, anesthesia, postoperative care.

They worked in the lab for a full seven or eight hours until it was nine o’clock at night.

The sky was dark and stars sparse.

”Teacher Chen, how about we go for some late night snacks?” Lu Cheng suggested at the lab doorway.

Chen Song’s rare hair was made into a peculiar style by the surgical cap, and cherishing his hair, he dared not mess it up, just gently combing it with his fingers: ”No rush, there’s plenty of time for snacks.”
