Demon King: Hero, don’t run away!

Chapter 620: Chapter 620 I’m Coming!

Lux Calendar, Year 414, December 13th, 8 A.M.

The sky was filled with greyish-white clouds, and a piercingly cold wind blew as if a heavy snowfall could, at any unsuspecting moment, tumble down from the sky and completely bury the Sailuomen Plain.

Yang Yu, dressed in thick clothing, exhaled a breath, and the moisture in it instantaneously bonded into tiny ice crystals, forming a thick fog that lingered stubbornly.

At the stronghold near Golden Tangerine City, the Lu Hua Army General was organizing the troops, planning to launch a fierce attack on Golden Tangerine City,

“We need a few squads to serve as the vanguard for the siege. Are there any teams that will volunteer? It’s best if the unit is a hundred strong, centurions, come forward eagerly.

If nobody….requests, then we will lower the requirements to the rank of centurion, and form new battle groups.”

The Lu Hua Army took a deep drag of his cigarette and exhaled a smoke ring.

After parting ways with the other units, the Lu Hua Army had drawn out five teams, ranging from one to three thousand strong, from the West Fifth Army First Unit to uproot the loosely defended Luoze strongholds, while the remaining soldiers were all here, intent on quickly taking Golden Tangerine City.

As expected, the defending troops of Golden Tangerine City had detected their approach early, shut the city gates, and busily arranged their defenses, showing no sign of wishing to come out and engage in battle.

This evolved into a siege, and sieges are the most difficult battles to fight.

Taking into account subsequent operations, the West Fifth Army hoped to maintain the integrity of Golden Tangerine City’s walls as much as possible. Therefore, they hoped that someone could scale the walls, create an opening in the midst of the city’s guards, descend to the other side of the wall, and open the gates.

Without a second thought, Yang Yu raised his hand high, as if fearful that someone might not hear him, and shouted loudly,

“I’ll go!”

Upon seeing this, the Lu Hua Army furrowed his brows, took another deep drag of his cigarette, and quickly smoked down half of the tobacco in the pipe.

If possible, the Lu Hua Army hoped to send some seasoned siege veterans with strength and experience.

However, choosing Yang Yu’s team was not a misstep. Yang Yu’s men had also participated in siege squads led by certain overeager officers, gaining a fair amount of experience.

Up to this moment, the Lu Hua Army had not heard any discordant noise from the troops led by Yang Yu.

Although he had not witnessed the training of Yang Yu and his team, from what he had heard, Yang Yu indeed possessed the strength to earn the respect of the troops he led. The general just didn’t know about his command capabilities.

After some deliberation, the Lu Hua Army incorporated Yang Yu’s troops into the vanguard responsible for the climbing battle, wanting to see if this young man really had the chops.

Afterward, the Lu Hua Army continued to inquire within the ranks if there were any teams willing to take on the climbing.

Although climbing was fraught with danger, it also came with hefty rewards. For every siege battle, Wansheng Country would set up a reward for the first up the wall to encourage the soldiers to enthusiastically cooperate in combat.

Gathering enough troops for the climb proved not as difficult as imagined.

After giving the climbing teams a brief warning, the Lu Hua Army distributed the lightweight cloud ladders brought by the supply troops to the various units, allowing them to organize their formations for the siege.

Yang Yu, with his troops, took their place at the very front of the siege units. A few burly soldiers shouldered the lightweight cloud ladders, with mages and archers who could conduct long-range attacks following closely behind the team, ready to provide cover for the siege soldiers.

Everything was ready, just awaiting the command. Yang Yu approached Bai Jin and said with a smile,

“Relax, just do what you can without any psychological burden. Yellow Flower, take good care of your sisters while I’m not around.”

Iyas nodded her head.

Afterward, Yang Yu took He Meng from the thick cotton hood of Bai Jin’s cloak and tucked it under his shield.

If He Meng had teeth, she really wanted to bite Yang Yu, but unfortunately, she didn’t, so she could only grumpily shrink between Yang Yu’s shield and arm.

“Indeed, you’ve developed some fondness, which is nice.”

Seeing how cooperative He Meng was, Yang Yu’s confidence grew a bit more.

…

Atop Golden Tangerine City, Great Commander Pison slightly furrowed his brows. The army of Wansheng Country had prepared much faster than before, and they had also grown significantly in this war.

The war could not drag on any longer; otherwise, humans would lose all their advantages to them.

“Order all troops to prepare for battle and secure a retreat route. When the city gates fall, be ready to withdraw from the back gate and fight our way out.”

“Yes!”

Upon receiving their superior’s instructions, the soldiers of the Luo Ze Empire swiftly relayed orders along the city walls, pouring buckets of water which were then frozen by magicians using Ice Magic.

In an instant, thick and slippery blocks of ice formed on the city walls.

Golden Tangerine City’s garrison was just over three thousand strong. Pison had received orders to resist as much as possible, to buy time, without engaging in desperate struggle against an enemy outnumbering them manifold.

The city was well-stocked with supplies, and if the enemy, like last time, spread their forces across multiple fronts, they had plenty of ways to hold out for a week or two.

But this time the Beastmen had adopted a large-scale encirclement strategy, focusing their forces. Defeat was inevitable sooner or later.

Pison found a man and quickly had him send this message out.

They decided to use the oldest method of foot-messaging for fear their magical communications could be intercepted.

Of course, they first had to withstand several hours of onslaught from Wansheng Country’s West Fifth Army First Unit.

All cities built on the plains are basically easy to defend but hard to attack. The Luoze soldiers lined up uniformly on the city walls, utilizing the high ground for their advantage in a top-down assault.

Pison was confident they could withstand the first wave of Wansheng Country’s attack.

Soon, as expected, Wansheng Country’s troops launched the first attack, and General Pison immediately ordered a defense.

In a flash, countless cannons roared, and dazzling magic and bows and arrows flew forth. But Wansheng Country’s troops showed no sign of retreat.

As magic and cannonballs exploded around him, Yang Yu moved his body; his thick clothing suddenly made him feel unbearably hot. Without a word, he ripped off his heavy garments, using his shield and sword in hand to block various attacks, clearing a path for his troops.

When the siege ladders made contact with the city walls, Yang Yu took a deep breath and used the “Climbing” skill, performing Wall Climbing to rush towards the top of the city walls.

Pison organized his forces to attack Yang Yu with magic or stones, but Yang Yu’s movements were incredibly agile, and he managed to dodge all the falling rocks and magic with little effort.

Even though magicians had added Ice Magic to the city walls making them extremely slick, Yang Yu’s feet still firmly grasped the wall, and he easily climbed over it.

This was the first person to climb atop the city wall so quickly, catching Pison completely off guard. He roared,

“Get him off here!”

Obeying his command, the soldiers of the Luo Ze Empire drew their swords and slashed at Yang Yu.

After dodging the attacks of several soldiers and before they could use their skills, Yang Yu grasped the opportunity and initiated “Interception,” followed by “Red Blood Path.”
