Demon King: Hero, don’t run away!

Chapter 614: Chapter 614: I Smell the Scent of Schemes

Yang Yu didn’t immediately follow the other soldiers to reinforce the walls but stood there observing for a while. After confirming that the Lu Hua Army didn’t intend to treat him differently, he “wisely” started to take action with Bai Jin and headed to the quarry behind them.

The Lu Hua Army didn’t say anything, just continued to stand on the side, supervising the reinforcement of the walls.

As the new soldiers were all over the place, not knowing how to ask the nearby veterans how to reinforce the walls.

Some bold new soldiers took the initiative, but before they could accomplish much, they were stopped by nearby veterans. They could only dismantle what they had built and, following the veterans’ instructions, started reinforcing the walls again.

With many new soldiers joining in the construction of the wall, the area became lively quickly, with every soldier working hard.

Soon the stones on the wall were running out, and the new soldiers realized that they had to allocate some people to transport stones. By that time, Yang Yu had already transported a fair amount of material, stacking it beneath the wall.

The reinforcement of the wall was barely completed by the end of the day.

Afterwards, the veterans were led by their respective commanders to eat, while the new soldiers gathered under the city gate, listening to the Lu Hua Army assign their placements, mainly a Centurion leading thirty new soldiers.

Among the assigned groups, one was particularly special—that was the group with Yang Yu as the Centurion.

Ming Dalak hoped the Lu Hua Army General would follow the Elf Queen’s wish, overcoming other difficulties, and allow Yang Yu and Iyas to act together as much as possible.

The Lu Hua Army did so, but well…

Yang Yu surveyed the new soldiers assigned to him, who were almost the least talented among the recruits.

“My group allocation is quite fair. No need to doubt it,” the Lu Hua Army smoked a cigar, looking at the last group left, Yang Yu’s group, “Come with me, let’s eat, then I’ll show you around the camp, and finally, I’ll introduce you to your superiors and subordinates.”

The corners of Yang Yu’s mouth slightly raised, his face showing no dissatisfaction, “I see. You made us build the wall to observe our strengths and personality from the details. Truly worthy of being a Lu Hua Army General, such an assignment is completely appropriate.”

“I don’t know your background or identity, but let’s make it clear in advance. This is a battlefield; here, we absolutely don’t allow any messing around.

The war has been going on for seven or eight years; though not so many now, in the past, I’ve seen too many incompetent jerks who, relying on connections, treated the war as a tool for promotion and profit.

They left one mess after another. I hope you won’t repeat their mistakes.”

Listening to what seemed like a reminder, Yang Yu could feel the resentment in it. The war had been going on for a very long time, and it wasn’t surprising to encounter a few people who preferred ranks over lives, making erratic commands.

“Thank you for the reminder, General. I must do my utmost to ensure the survival of my men.”

The Lu Hua Army didn’t respond, just continued to lead Yang Yu and the others for a tasteless military meal, then introduced them to a higher-ranking officer, showed them how to navigate the camp, and finally took Yang Yu and his group to a tent.

Inside, there were over sixty veterans waiting for orders. Among them, a noticeably stocky middle-aged man with three scars on his face stood out. Through the interface, Yang Yu could see the information of each person.

The man’s name was Ayoy, his attributes nearly matched Yang Yu’s. He was listed as a soldier from Wansheng Country, without any title like Centurion or Squad Leader.

Seeing him, Yang Yu smelled a setup in the air.

In some reckless games, it often happens that just because a high-ranked person says something, it is taken as the truth.

For instance, Yang Yu had once played a game where, without achieving much, he was appointed as a general by the King of that world, and wherever he went, people addressed him as General.

But…

You say you appoint me as a general, but at least give me the military authority. Turns out the title of general was just a title, fighting monsters and leveling up still depended on me and my friends, which was full of loopholes.

However, in this game, different military ranks held different real powers. It isn’t hard to imagine—if one became King, they could command an entire country.

In RPGs, climbing on top step by step, it’s natural to encounter some dissenters who, without a second word, come to hand over their Experience Value.

Being commanded by a military officer with an obscure background, these veterans must have felt discontent. They certainly didn’t want to entrust their lives to someone they didn’t know.

That soldier was likely the one representing the veterans in challenging me. If he defeats me, he can firmly take the position of the Centurion.

Just as Yang Yu was thinking about how to establish his authority within the group of nearly a hundred people, the Lu Hua Army introduced him again to those present,

“I’ve gathered you here for no other reason than to introduce your new Centurion, his name is Potato Thorn.

Those behind him are the new recruits he leads. I hope you’ll treat them kindly and teach them the rules of the battlefield, that’s all.”

With that, the Lu Hua Army then looked towards Yang Yu,

“Do not forget what I taught you, obeying orders is your first priority.

Someone should have already taught you what you needed to know before departing.

We don’t have much time. Quickly get these new recruits integrated.

That’s all I have to say for today. Now is the time for independent training. You may take this troop for self-guided training and after finishing, please adhere to the designated time for lights out.

I have other matters to attend to. Here, take this book of military regulations of Wansheng Country, make sure you thoroughly understand it.”

Taking the military regulations book from the Lu Hua Army’s hands, Yang Yu smiled and bid farewell to the Lu Hua Army.

The words spoken by the Lu Hua Army were quite clear; Yang Yu was already eager to earn these Experience Values.

Clearing his throat, Yang Yu spoke and introduced himself again briefly:

“Just as you all heard, my name is Potato Thorn. While it might be time-consuming, I hope you all accept each other so that I can also remember everyone. This is my first command.

You over there, any dissatisfaction? Yes, you, start with you. Begin your self-introduction!”

Yang Yu’s demeanor was extremely arrogant, yet the provocation he expected did not come.

The veteran named Ayoy stood tall and firmly responded, “My name is Ayoy! I like fish and hate spoiled grass shoes. Report complete.”

Yang Yu frowned slightly.

This seemed a bit different from what he had expected. Where was the provocation?

“So, is there anything you want to say to me?” Yang Yu tentatively asked.

Ayoy responded again with a robust voice, “No, sir. We will absolutely obey your commands, and please, Sir, take responsibility for your own words and actions, and do not violate any military regulations!”
