High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2447: Chapter 668: Slow on the Uptake

The Ink Talisman class ended at nine o’clock in the evening.

Zheng Qing was hungry again.

He fished out the leftover salty meat sandwich from the Grey Cloth Bag, munching as he hurriedly took the path towards Gu Diao Street in North Beta Town, grumbling incessantly about the poor road conditions.

Before this year, the North District of Beta Town was an undeniable ”Dent Area” on Buji Island. Not only was basic infrastructure lacking, but even clean and tidy streets were few. However, with the emergence of Northern District Wizards, the dented area began to transform into a Frog Area, slowly leveling out, though at a painfully slow pace.

Then came the sudden appearance of Edge Academy, hinting that the North District might soon become the core of Beta Town—it’s said that after the academy’s establishment, several long corridors connecting to the North District will be added for the convenience of students, but as of now, these corridors are still out of sight.

Tonight it’s overcast, with no moon.

Zheng Qing tugged at the wide hood over his head, concealing his face even more tightly.

’Little Star’ summoned a few guiding light spheres like mischievous fireflies, darting quickly and slowly before the young wizard. Perhaps due to the late hour, there were few pedestrians on the street, but Zheng Qing cautiously held his copper Law book while activating an Amulet.

Moreover, he called Furry Bean over.

”Is Dong Dong asleep?” The young teaching assistant asked absentmindedly while munching on the sandwich, glancing at the dog darting around his feet.

Ever since he appointed the dog as Dong Dong’s guardian, he rarely summoned it during the day. He guessed that Poseidon was asleep by now, so he called the dog over for some courage.

”Meow~ Ow!”

The dog responded softly, its tail wagging cheerfully, with its bright eyes shining distinctly in the night.

”Good, if he’s asleep then that’s fine... it’s time for bed... You don’t have to follow him too closely during the day, just keep an eye on him...” At this point, Zheng Qing paused, recalling a chat with Su Shijun and added with some concern, ”By the way, be careful of the big fox at home. If you stay too close to Dong Dong, she might catch you and have you neutered! I’m not joking!”

”Meow!”

Furry Bean immediately tucked its tail in, letting out a soft whimper.

”Keep your distance and you’ll be fine...”

Zheng Qing bent down, comfortingly patted the dog’s head, and before he could straighten up, he saw the dog’s fur on its neck puff up, body crouched low, growling with a warning from the throat.

The warlock hesitated not one bit, quickly flicked the Haha Beads from his wrist onto the ground, and opened the Law book, casting a stronger Guarding Curse upon himself:

”Restricting South Mountain, Maintaining Rock-like Firmness!”

Buzz!

Pale yellow spell light rose from the Law book and then fell, transforming into a semi-transparent phantom of a small mountain, securely guarding the young wizard beneath it, while seven pale golden silhouettes leaped forth in the cover of the spell light.

A few vague cries sounded from afar, seemingly from passing pedestrians.

Zheng Qing paid no mind to the source of those startled calls; he squinted, carefully inspecting the densest shadows of the night, trying to determine where the threat felt by Furry Bean originated.

”Good reflexes, definitely qualifies as a proper hunter.”

With this cheerful voice, a tall figure emerged from the night, stopping not far from the warlock, self-assuredly surveying the surroundings and those small alchemy puppets, adding, ”The dog is good... just these puppets are somewhat lacking.”

It was Korma.

Zheng Qing quietly exhaled in relief, extending his hand to recall the Haha Beads.

”If my Merlin Medal were here, they’d definitely be interesting.” The young assistant murmured, caressing the beads back on his wrist, then glanced at the unexpected visitor, ”Incidentally, scaring people can be quite deadly... Weren’t we supposed to meet at Sakura Pub? Why did you suddenly appear here?”

”The news leaked.”

The witch spread her hands insincerely, looking innocent, ”Meeting you tonight was a last-minute addition to my schedule, so several secretaries saw it... And my secretaries will be studying at Edge Academy this semester... Hmm, perhaps their curiosity about their future teacher got the better of them, and one told two, two told three... Somehow, Beta Town Post found out... Now a bunch of journalists are blocking the pub entrance, planning to ambush you.”

Though she spoke genteelly, Zheng Qing knew that her so-called ’somehow’ was definitely due to someone from the Northern District Wizard selling the news. To the former tricksters, such behavior was understandable, but for the current Northern District Wizards, it was quite embarrassing.

”You should strengthen the internal discipline of the Northern District Wizard Group,” Zheng Qing considered and offered his suggestion.

”Take it slow. They still don’t understand a true wizard’s reverence for the rule of ’silence.’

Korma paced leisurely beside the warlock, hands behind her back, voice somewhat lazy, ”Moreover, isn’t education the original intent of establishing Edge Academy?”

Zheng Qing suddenly felt somewhat uncomfortable.

He wasn’t sure if it was because he was too close to the witch or simply a normal stress response of an ordinary wizard before a big wizard.

”So, do you have any opinions on my educational plans?”

Zheng Qing immediately thought of his purpose for the night, but upon reflection, he realized he hadn’t offered any educational plans, swiftly added, ”Of course, I haven’t submitted a plan... because I lack experience... I mean, Professor Montreya suggested starting with the most basic talisman structure, do you agree?”

He finally remembered that the big wizard before him was, in name, his superior and promptly became more obedient, using respectful language.

Korma didn’t immediately answer Zheng Qing’s question.

Instead, she raised a hand, pressing it on his shoulder, just like that morning on the fifth, taking a few steps forward, the night passing like a carousel lamp, and with a blink, they found themselves outside that small pub again.

Zheng Qing rather belatedly recalled the conversation between them from that day.

——”How about teaching them magic?”

——”No problem!”

”When I promised to teach them magic, you didn’t mention it was to make me a teaching assistant.” Zheng Qing scratched his head, feeling slightly deceived, ”I honestly thought it was something like the volunteer service at Jini Cottage.”

”Did I not make it clear back then?”

The witch casually questioned, blinking, then tapped a finger against her temple in a mockingly troubled manner, ”Ah, sorry, it’s just so much going on, managing a big household... But bringing you here isn’t about reminiscing the past; it’s to show you how a little hope can bring so much happiness to them.”
