High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2424: Chapter 645: The Luckiest Hunters

Zheng Qing tilted his head, dodging the Fat Wizard’s two thumb-sized thumbs. The first thought that popped into his mind was that Xiao Xiao had sold him out. Instinctively, he turned to look at the short Warlock next to him.

”It wasn’t me, don’t look at me.”

Xiao Xiao was eagerly scribbling into his black-skinned notebook. Sensing Zheng Qing’s gaze, he denied with three consecutive answers, without even raising his head: ”I just got here, know nothing about it...”

Zheng Qing’s suspicious gaze shifted to the other side, towards the Fat Wizard, with a hint of inquiry: ”So how did you find out about this? I haven’t told anyone yet...”

”It’s not the Doctor, don’t blame an innocent man!”

The Fat Wizard patted his chest with a righteous stance and pointed with his chin: ”It’s Li Meng; she can’t wait for everyone in the class to know her cousin is graduating early... I think she’s happier than receiving gifts during the New Year.”

Zheng Qing was suddenly enlightened.

It was because Jiang Yu kept Li Meng in check at school, making the Little Witch react this way. But still, Jiang Yu had another year at school, and Li Meng was jumping around now without fear of having her ears pulled by her cousin?

Thinking this, the boy couldn’t help but glance towards the front row of the classroom.

He saw Li Meng surrounded by Witches and a few Warlocks, whispering about something. Occasionally, a short arm would extend from the crowd, pointing in his direction. Then, a wave of gazes with meaningful expressions would follow. The atmosphere made Zheng Qing truly feel what it meant to be ’pointed at by a thousand people’.

”So?”

The Fat Wizard firmly turned Zheng Qing’s head back, staring at him intensely.

”So what?” Zheng Qing pushed away the Fat Wizard’s hand irritably, his mind suddenly conjuring a steamy, well-sauced braised pig’s trotters.

”You haven’t answered a single one of my questions!”

Xin Fat Man was furious, his face turning blue: ”I protected you from the doorway to your seat, answered your questions, and I’m your roommate, so why would you go ask Li Meng, that little girl, for news? Don’t tell me you didn’t look for goodies in my bag when you returned to the dorm!”

”There was no one stopping me at the door; I could walk in by myself.”

Zheng Qing muttered, evasively avoiding the Fat Wizard’s sharp last question, his gaze wandering: ”Where’s the Elder? Isn’t he here yet?”

”He took leave, won’t be here until tomorrow. Apparently, he and his brother are hunting a Sea Dragon in the North Sea.” The Fat Wizard replied impatiently, his blue face puffing up like a bun: ”Don’t change the subject!”

Zheng Qing sighed heavily and honestly answered the first question: ”I do plan to graduate early.”

”And then?”

The blue hue quickly faded from the Fat Wizard’s face, replaced by excitement as he took out a small notebook.

”Jiang Yu has the same plan.” Zheng Qing reluctantly answered another question.

”Anything else?” The Fat Wizard’s eyes shone brightly.

Zheng Qing pondered, his gaze wandering around the classroom, just happening to see Matthew quietly staring at him. Suddenly reminded of those enthusiastic fans of Su Shijun from the Clans of the Moon, his heart tightened, and he hastily replied, ”Councilor Su—I’m saying, Su Councilor knows about this too!... Don’t publish this news; just let it out quietly.”

He didn’t want to inexplicably bear the burden of a ’cheater’ label and end up ambushed in a sack one night. So some necessary groundwork in public opinion was necessary.

”Then you better give me more exclusive news.”

The Fat Wizard’s Feather Pen crazily danced in his little notebook, and Zheng Qing faintly saw phrases like ’Reliable source’, ’Involved party’, ’Within a semester’, ’Unprecedented’.

Ahem!

Zheng Qing cleared his throat, contemplating whether to reveal that Jiang Yu stayed at the Greenhill Mansion for a week, or that Su Shijun helped them study the curriculum. Suddenly, his view darkened as a tall figure appeared in front of his desk.

It was Tang Dun.

Zheng Qing raised his eyebrows in surprise—though relations with the Monitor of Astronomy Class 08-1 weren’t cold, they didn’t usually interact much. He wondered why Tang Dun was seeking him.

The only thing he could think of was the rumors Xin Fat Man had just mentioned.

”I’m not cheating!”

The young public-funded student cautiously looked at the tall figure in front of him, blurting out spontaneously. The Fat Wizard beside him silently rolled his eyes, uttering not a word.

”Cheating?”

Tang Dun seemed a bit puzzled: ”What cheating... no, no, no, I’m not here to gossip with you. I heard you killed a Great Demon during winter vacation, is it true?”

Zheng Qing blinked, a strong urge to use the Time Converter welling up inside him. But at the touch of the pocket watch’s cold case, he realized he hadn’t received the school’s Time Converter yet, feeling rather disappointed.

”I was present at the scene!”

Xin Fat Man seized the moment to brag, wearing a prideful expression: ”It’s absolutely true, even though the school forbids widespread coverage. A little inquiry in Beta Town...”

”Can’t find much detail.”

Tang Dun sighed, leaning forward a bit and checking the surroundings, then lowered his voice: ”I’m just curious about how you guys managed it... Black Wizard at the Great Demon level!”

He eyed the young public-funded student up and down with admiration tinged with disbelief.

”It was luck, pure luck.”

Zheng Qing mumbled, trying to dissociate himself from the matter: ”We... I mean the Absolution Hunting Team, were executing an Alliance-designated mission, and there were ten hunting teams on site, along with several Big Wizards. I remember there was Vice Principal Simon from Starry Sky Academy, Sister Margaret from Atlas, and a deputy director from the School Works Committee, with the surname Qian... It’s not surprising to gang up on a Great Demon who just advanced and beat it to bits.”

That said.

Using ChunQiu style of writing, Zheng Qing didn’t explain to Tang Dun that the ’just advanced’ Great Demon had leaped to a top Big Wizard’s combat capacity due to a special method, nor that his Fu Bullet could open a big hole in the Great Demon with each shot, nor did he clarify that everyone present was being pressured by numerous experimental subjects driven by the Black Wizard.

After his description, Zheng Qing seemed to turn into ’the last straw that broke the camel’s back’—a flattering expression; for someone with a more negative view, it might evoke terms like ’snatching credit’ or ’taking advantage’.

Xin Fat Man, having been through that battle, naturally knew that Zheng Qing wasn’t speaking the whole truth. But after receiving Zheng Qing’s warning look, he wisely remained silent, lowering his head to perfect the news article on his little notebook himself.

”That’s still impressive!”

Tang Dun immediately accepted Zheng Qing’s account—evidently, it matched most people’s understanding—he openly expressed the envy in his tone: ”The Great Demon-level spoils of war... you might be the luckiest Hunter in the First University in the past hundred years!”
