High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2430: Chapter 651: The Youngest Teaching Assistant

The moon on the eighth day is already half full.

The gentle, white moonlight outlines clear contours in the campus. Without even looking up, Zheng Qing can distinguish which shadow belongs to the sycamore tree on the edge of the courtyard, which shadow belongs to the old locust tree at the entrance of the back garden, and which shadow is of the squirrel playing dead while holding the chestnuts saved from winter, warily watching him as he slowly passes by.

If Zheng Qing were a cat right now, he would surely be very interested in chasing that squirrel around half of the campus.

But he is still a person now.

As a person, one must have some human demeanor, especially now that he is an official teaching assistant, a legitimate ’member with official assistant team benefits’ employee at the First University, he should particularly not show his former frivolousness.

Thinking of this, the young wizard subconsciously lifted his chin and walked even more uprightly.

The night was cool, the breeze swayed, and the air carried the scent of moist earth mixed with dry grass, the aura of the Lin Zhong Lake after its thaw, the fragrance of buds sprouting from branches, and the restless smell emanating from students rushing to school at night.

It was like a spring already stepping over the threshold.

The entire campus was pervaded by a scent known as ’newborn’.

Zheng Qing’s gaze wandered around, eager to catch a student violating campus rules to test his new assistant weight. Unfortunately, until he returned to the dormitory, he did not find such an opportunity.

He pushed open the door with a slight disappointment.

The room was bright. It was very rare for Tuan Tuan not to curl into a ball, instead stretching long across the dormitory’s desk. On one side of the cat line was Doctor Xiao, holding a stack of Tarot cards doing a reading, and on the other side was the Fat Wizard, organizing various supplies and books before the start of school.

”I bought a few extra pounds of dragon bone powder, if you need some, you can take it from me directly, there’s no need to go to North District.” Zheng Qing noticed the Fat Wizard using a copper spoon to scrape the bottom of the jar for the remaining bone powder and spoke very generously.

Dragon bone powder is a widely consumed magic material, not only used to make cinnabar but also for various magic potions, it’s extremely versatile. Normally, when Zheng Qing and others needed it, they would go to the North Beita Town to find dragon bone powder that, although not very authentic, was cheap in price.

But this time, Zheng Qing directly bought ten jade coins worth of authentic goods from Fizzell — similarly, this year he purchased all his textbooks as originals and chose the best materials from Fizzell Magic Potion Company and Madingtoyle Alchemy Company.

Hearing Zheng Qing’s generous proposal, the Fat Wizard looked up in surprise towards the door.

”After half a month, have you struck it rich?”

He looked the young cost student up and down, his hand still scraping the jar, never pausing: ”Having money, you still must learn to be thrifty openly. Do you think I’m scraping the jar? No, I’m scraping the essence of life... what’s that in your hand?”

The Fat Wizard spotted the job offer Zheng Qing was holding in his arms with his sharp eyes.

Or rather, it was deliberately made visible for someone to notice.

”Oh, this...”

Zheng Qing glanced at the job offer in his arms, considering how to modestly describe it without appearing pretentious, when a chubby hand had already snatched the offer from him and opened it.

Burp.

The Fat Wizard let out a loud burp.

The sound was so loud that it drew the attention of Tuan Tuan, who was doing yoga, and Xiao Xiao, who was doing fortune-telling, both raised their heads simultaneously, and Xiao Xiao held a card in his hand.

”What card is it?” Zheng Qing asked, pretending to be interested.

”Upright Hermit.”

The diviner of the Absolution Hunting Team’s gaze fell on the cover of the job offer in the Fat Wizard’s hand, thoughtfully: ”I originally thought this card was prompting you to deeply consider your role and position in the relationship... but now it seems more like a reminder from destiny to avoid danger and be cautious.”

Zheng Qing scratched his chin, his smile subdued a bit.

No matter the interpretation, the conclusion seemed rather unpleasant.

”Did Old Yao leave you two because of this matter?”

The Fat Wizard tossed the job offer to Xiao Xiao, a small notebook and a feather pen appearing in his hand at some point, with an eager expression: ”What else did he say? How about your status? Does the school allow students to hold teaching positions? Will you stay after graduation? Did you graduate early because of this? When did you know you would be a teaching assistant!”

The string of questions not only pounded Zheng Qing into a daze but even the cat line on the desk abandoned its exercises, raising its tail, leaning over with Xiao Xiao to look at the document.

”I only just learned about it myself.”

Zheng Qing took a small step back, raising his hands to indicate to the Fat Man to calm down and stay far away from him: ”Jiang Yu staying has nothing to do with this, she’s not a teaching assistant... I didn’t plan on staying at school or not staying, graduating early has nothing to do with this teaching assistant role... As for student status, Old Yao didn’t discuss that aspect, so maybe the school allows students to teach?”

He wasn’t sure about his guess either.

”There’s no related provision in the ’First University Campus Management Regulations’.”

Someone beside immediately provided a very ’authoritative’ answer: ”As the saying goes, if it’s not prohibited by law, it’s permissible. Since there’s no regulation against students teaching, then naturally, students can teach...”

”A teacher!”

The Fat Man seemed to have eaten a big slice of cream-topped cake, his feather pen leaping as he sighed contentedly: ”A student who doesn’t aspire to be a teacher isn’t a good student... A student who becomes a teacher... you must be one of the youngest teaching assistants in the school’s history!”

”Not just one of.”

Xiao Xiao still holding the job offer, carefully examining it, although it did not hinder him to correct the Fat Wizard’s mistaken expression: ”While the school’s history does have some students who graduated in their second year, like the Great Alchemist Jiang Qianli, the important Dimensionism theorist Big Wizard Smell Note, and Doctor Duzem who refined the Philosopher’s Stone, etc., but most of their talents were consumed in the laboratory... There has never been a precedent in the school’s history for a second-year student still enrolled to hold a teaching position, even if it’s just an assistant post.”

Zheng Qing really didn’t know that he was so outstanding, reflexively straightening his posture even more. The bent-over Tuan Tuan gave him a disdainful look, snorted scornfully, raised its tail, jumped onto Xin Fat Man’s pillow, and continued its nap.

Xin Fat Man also finally seemed to realize who could provide him with more writing material, and which target he should really have interviewed.

”What are you looking at?”

He noticed Xiao Xiao scrutinizing the job offer, enthusiastically moving closer. After seeing where Xiao Xiao’s finger pointed, he raised his eyebrows: ”Some tabloids and anecdotes, what’s worth the attention? Are there some secret magic runes attached to it?”
