High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2406: Chapter 627: Basic Credits and Bonus Credits

For students at First University, credits are a very important concept.

But they are not difficult to obtain.

Elective courses that pass the assessment will earn basic credits, outstanding performance in class will earn bonus credits, volunteering during the school hunting competition can also earn bonus credits, and there are hunting team captures, private student transactions, betting, and so on. It can be said that First University provides every student with plenty of opportunities to earn credits.

Take Zheng Qing as an example, in less than two months after entering his freshman year, he accumulated thirty-three credits, which included class rewards—especially the most from the Fu Lu class— as well as credits exchanged at Old Yao’s place using the invitations received during the freshman club recruitment. Then, in October’s school hunting competition, Zheng Qing made a small bet and accumulated forty-eight credits in less than half a semester.

These forty-eight credits all belong to bonus credits.

In normal circumstances, a student only needs to obtain about one hundred and ten credits in one academic year to smoothly enter the next year (including more than fifty basic credits and a considerable amount of bonus credits), and Zheng Qing’s speed of earning credits is almost twice that of an average student, theoretically making it not difficult for him to meet the conditions for early graduation.

But everything is difficult when it comes to theoretical versus practical.

Because young wizards need to continuously use credits during their learning process to exchange for various materials needed for magic experiments or to pay credits for obtaining magic skills beyond the books, coupled with the expenses on numerous school facilities such as labs, hunting grounds, libraries, and the occurrence of ’deduction’ situations, the actual consumption of credits is enormous, leading to many students nearing the end of the term, only to find that their credits have long been overspent, insufficient to cope with the final assessment.

Once upon a time, Zheng Qing thought that exchanging one credit for one jade coin was really worth it, many times he looked at the bright red numbers on his student card, wishing he could exchange them for a pile of bluish-green jade coins.

But now, when he can earn seven hundred and fifty jade coins a month, he suddenly feels credits are more precious; even at market rates of three jade coins for one (bonus) credit, or even higher exchange rates, he feels it’s not a loss.

It’s just that exchanging jade coins for credits has always been a seller’s market, with price but no market.

”I still need to elect...” Zheng Qing’s feather pen scribbled and doodled on the parchment for a long time, extending his voice, taking forever to finish a sentence.

Su Shijun impatiently hooked her finger.

The parchment under Zheng Qing’s hand seemed to grow wings and floated straight into her hand.

On the paper was a categorization of ’basic credits’ and ’bonus credits’ listed by the warlock.

So-called basic credits are the course credits obtained by passing elective courses exams; for instance, the curse course can earn three credits per semester if the exam is qualified, the history of magic is two, while more obscure subjects like Blood Race Emblem Studies, only have one credit.

However many courses are elected, as long as the exams are passed, an equal number of basic credits will be awarded. Zheng Qing calculated this very clearly, ten courses with twenty-seven credits in the first half of the freshman year, same for the second half, and if nothing unexpected happens in the first half of the sophomore year, another twenty-six credits. All three semesters add up to a total of eighty credits.

Bonus credits, on the other hand, are credits obtained through channels other than basic credits.

These mainly fall into three categories.

The first category is rewards from professors. For example, when recruiting new members for clubs at the beginning of freshman year, Old Yao promised that every invitation received would earn zero point one credit, Zheng Qing received ten credits that time; for instance, excellent class performance, Zheng Qing regularly received rewards in Fu Lu class, he greatly suspects Teacher Zhang allocated most of the credits she could give to him; or unexpected incident rewards—when Zheng Qing first went to the Wandering Bar to save Li Meng, Old Yao rewarded everyone with five credits, two of which were given to him.

The second category is rewards from the school. For example, in freshman year, the school issued a task to search for Sand Time Worms, rewarding two credits; during night patrols by Lin Zhong Lake, Old Verne once gave credit rewards to patrolmen who captured Fishmen coming ashore; and volunteering for the school hunting party chores also earned credits from the school.

The third category can be summarized as others. These include private transactions between students, such as Zheng Qing’s bets during the school hunting party, and the reward he got for assisting the owner of Gini Cottage to complete a magic ritual from a bulletin board notice, and so on; as well as rewards from outside organizations or institutions, such as the Beta Town Management Committee’s credit reward for cooperative defense requests during Silent Forest’s Black Tide outbreak, and so on.

The number shown on the student card is the total credits.

Because both types of credits are used the same way in daily life—whether for exchanging magic experiment materials, renting school hunting grounds for practicing curses, or offsetting school penalties—there is no difference.

But just like jade coins and credits.

Basic credits can be used as bonus credits to perform various exchanges and offsets; however, bonus credits cannot replace basic credits to make up for a student’s failure to pass a certain exam.

Thus Zheng Qing needs to recalculate.

Because the two hundred credits required for early graduation are the total credits after ’penalty deductions’, excluding various bonus credits, and the remaining basic credits after ’additions’ and ’reductions’.

The school, when penalizing deductions, will first deduct bonus credits. If bonus credits are insufficient, it will continue to deduct basic credits until the credits are reduced to a negative number.

For Zheng Qing, his bonus credits can completely cover deductions—from off-campus fights at the beginning of freshman year, to deductions in Alchemy class by Professor Tesla, to deductions for conflicts during the school hunting competition, injuries to Sepulano, deductions for leaving the team privately during the Ban Magic Festival, chaos caused in practice classes, and so on—though it sounds like a lot, the actual total does not exceed fifty, far from touching the safety line of basic credits.

”...which means you currently have eighty basic credits, but early graduation requires two hundred credits, you still need one hundred and twenty basic credits, correct.”

Su Shijun flicked a bold stroke, erasing the ’useless’ details of bonus credits on the parchment, leaving only the final few numbers, then looked up at Zheng Qing, reminding, ”Don’t waste those bonus credits if you can’t use them all up, they can be exchanged with the school for various magic materials needed for the registered wizard advancement ritual, or rent the school’s labs... you’ll only realize after leaving the school that some things can’t be bought with jade coins.”

Zheng Qing nodded repeatedly, but his attention was focused on the need for one hundred and twenty credits just mentioned by the witch.

”I haven’t calculated ’bonuses’ and ’reductions’ yet.” The eager cost student added impatiently.
