Chapter 150: Chapter 140: Refusing Surgery for Wang Wannian and His Son

”So, after discussing it with Dean Liu, we’ve decided against performing the surgery ourselves. It’s not that we’re unwilling, or that we’re afraid of the risks. Rather, Dean Liu and I feel that there’s a better team for your grandfather’s surgery—one with entirely new techniques and a new approach.”

”We believe that under their care, your grandfather will have a higher lesion resection rate, fewer complications, and a lower short-term recurrence rate.”

Hearing Professor Liang’s words, Wang Wanguang and Wang Hongqing glanced at each other, somewhat surprised and even a little pleased.

”Professor Liang, is this team also one of the expert groups attending the conference on Daytime Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy? They must be incredible to make both you and Dean Liu admit they’re better.”

”I wonder which team they’re from and who the professor is. Qinghe City Jiuhua Hospital? Or the Funing University-affiliated Fenglin Hospital from Xianglin City?”

Wang Wanguang was curious and wanted to know more.

”Ha, you’re both right and wrong. Their team will indeed be attending this conference on expert consensus for daytime surgery. However, they’re the hosts this time, and also the team that drafted the initial standards for that consensus.”

”Wanguang, coming here to Jin Province and getting to work on a surgery with a team like this has been incredibly rewarding for me. Later, I’ll share the video of that surgery from Haijin Port in our department’s group chat so everyone can observe and study it carefully.”

”You happen to be a Fan City local. I’m sure you and your family are familiar with Fan City First Hospital.”

”The team is led by Dr. Wu Ting from the Fan City First Medical Center for Laparoscopic Diagnosis and Treatment Technology Research. It’s a very young team. I’m sure you’ve noticed the Jin Country Surgery Journal Wu Ting Special Issue that’s everywhere today. That’s their handiwork.”

”If you have the time, you should really go and connect with this team. The publication of their findings is probably the biggest milestone in our field of hepatobiliary surgery in recent years.”

”Once this expert consensus conference is over, I’m going to change my schedule and extend my stay by a few days. Our entire team plans to have a thorough exchange with the Fan City First Hospital Research Center.”

After recommending Wu Ting’s team to Wang Wanguang, Professor Liang said no more.

After all, admitting that he and Dean Liu were less skilled and had to give up the surgery wasn’t exactly a point of pride. They were magnanimous and principled enough to acknowledge that Wu Ting’s team was superior and better suited for the operation, but he certainly wasn’t going to be the one to make the request to Wu Ting’s team on Wang Wanguang’s behalf.

For one, Wang Wanguang didn’t have that much clout. For another, it wasn’t his place to ask.

”Wanguang, Dean Liu and I still have some things to discuss. Why don’t you go contact the team at City First Hospital right away. I wish your grandfather a successful surgery.”

After giving his advice, Professor Liang hung up.

Wang Wanguang and Wang Hongqing were utterly stunned.

Their minds were reeling. To think that even Professor Liang Ang and Dean Liu combined felt they were outmatched.

’This team from Fan City First Hospital is really that incredible?’

Not long ago, Director Huo and Dr. Wu Ting had personally come to Bei City Hospital to handle the pre-operative preparations for his grandfather and had even personally invited them to the Fan City First Hospital Research Center for the surgery.

But the two of them had flatly rejected the offer, and very rudely at that.

Wang Hongqing frowned, his expression turning sour.

Wang Wanguang was filled with even more regret. ’If only we had let Director Huo and Wu Ting operate on Grandfather back then.’

’What do we do now?’

”Dad, it’s all my fault. Who could have guessed this team from Fan City First Hospital was so incredible? What do we do now? If we try to invite them again, they’ll definitely refuse.”

Wang Wanguang said, dejected.

Wang Hongqing thought for a moment. ”Wanguang, don’t panic. It’s true we offended this Huo Yun and Wu Ting. But at the end of the day, they’re just doctors at City First Hospital. I may be too ashamed to ask those two again myself, but we can go through the higher-ups.”

”I still have some connections in Fan City. I’ll find someone to get their leadership to intervene. As long as their superiors agree, a mere director and a young doctor will have no choice but to obediently perform the surgery for us.”

Wang Hongqing quickly used his official connections, having a director from the Health Bureau contact Vice Dean Tang Long of Fan City First Hospital.

Upon hearing that someone had pulled strings to arrange a surgery for a family member, specifically requesting Huo Yun and Wu Ting’s team, Dean Tang summoned Huo Yun and Wu Ting to his office.

After Huo Yun and Wu Ting arrived at the dean’s office, Dean Tang explained the situation: a patient was hoping they would perform a surgery.

Huo Yun had no objection to a request from Dean Tang, but once he learned the patient was at Bei City Hospital and had the surname Wang, he put two and two together.

”Dean Tang, is the patient’s family member named Wang Hongqing, also known as President Wang?”

Dean Tang, unaware of the details, confirmed,

”That’s right. He’s a big boss from our very own Bei City and has some connections in town. A director from the Health Bureau asked me to do this as a favor. Why, do you know the patient?”

Huo Yun calmly recounted the history of the matter.

Tang Long now understood Huo Yun’s stance.

Dean Tang then turned to Wu Ting. ”Wu Ting, what are your thoughts?”

Wu Ting replied, laying out his points logically:

”Dean Tang, when a patient comes to us for treatment, we as doctors certainly have no reason to refuse them.”

”It’s just that our Research Center is currently focused entirely on organizing the upcoming expert consensus on Daytime Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.”

”Moreover, regarding the resection for this patient’s severe cirrhosis complicated by a liver tumor, our team does indeed have a brand-new Surgical Technique. However, this technique is still in the experimental phase. It hasn’t been officially rolled out, and the procedure itself is not yet mature.”

”According to our Research Center’s current schedule, we won’t be offering this Surgical Technique to the public for the time being. After Ms. Song Ying’s surgery in Xiao City, our Center still hasn’t finished procuring all the necessary new equipment. Furthermore, Yan Xi, Ling Ling, and Dr. Jin Yan are all fully dedicated to preparing for the expert consensus.”

”As for me, my personal focus for the immediate future is the application for the National Youth Fund project.”

”Therefore, even if Director Huo could make time to be the chief surgeon, our Research Center simply can’t spare the team, equipment, staff, or energy.”

”You can relay this to the patient and his family: once our Research Center officially launches this Surgical Technique, they are welcome to make an appointment for a consultation.”

Wu Ting’s demeanor was neither servile nor overbearing.

Huo Yun was very satisfied with Wu Ting’s response. They had a responsibility to the Research Center, and the big picture was what mattered most.

Dean Tang understood their feelings. Doctors needed to have a backbone.

”Director Huo, Wu Ting, the Research Center’s work takes precedence over everything. Your team should focus on preparing for the expert consensus. I’ll handle the response to the higher-ups.”

Dean Tang was also very clear on his priorities. Fan City First Hospital was a public hospital, after all.

’Once our ’Perfect Triumvirate’ Laparoscopic-Assisted Radical Hepatic Tumor Resection is officially launched, we’ll have no reason to turn away any patient who makes an appointment.’
