Doctor: I Can Synthesize Infinite Entries

Chapter 107: Chapter 106: The Project Team Goes All Out

For the next few days, Wu Ting, Qin Donglai, and Director Huang continued to perform surgeries for their comparison study.

Yasui was responsible for recording the various metrics of the patients in the wards.

Meanwhile, Cheng Feng was assigned to the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department to specifically follow and document Lu Xuejun’s traditional laparoscopic cholecystectomies.

Director Cai had already spoken to Lu Xuejun about Cheng Feng’s arrival, but he didn’t disclose the real reason.

As a result, Lu Xuejun assumed Wu Ting had sent Cheng Feng over to learn the cholecystectomy techniques of the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department.

Lu Xuejun was quite welcoming of Cheng Feng’s arrival. When it was time for surgery, he allowed Cheng Feng into the operating room.

Cheng Feng remained tight-lipped and diligently filmed and documented the entire process, from pre-op to the surgery itself.

After seeing the procedures in his own department, watching Lu Xuejun’s surgery felt truly unremarkable.

However, for the sake of the paper’s integrity, Cheng Feng patiently recorded Lu Xuejun’s less-than-stellar surgery in its entirety.

During the recording, Lu Xuejun saw the young man, Cheng Feng, and intentionally gave a running commentary, his words filled with no small amount of self-praise.

The doctors in the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department also found it interesting.

In their view, Cheng Feng must have been specially sent by Wu Ting to observe and record Dr. Lu’s surgery to learn its essential techniques.

”It’s probably because of that patient transfer incident before. It must have made Wu Ting lose some face, so he didn’t dare come personally. He sent Cheng Feng to film and learn the advanced techniques of Hepatobiliary Surgery instead.”

After filming in the operating room, Cheng Feng followed them to the patient wards.

He even took out a professional set of post-operative metrics and recorded them every few hours.

The junior doctors in Hepatobiliary Surgery were a bit confused by this, but they didn’t pay it much mind.

After all, Cheng Feng was just a junior doctor with little influence, and with the Emergency Department having just become a laughingstock, the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department didn’t take him too seriously and just let him be.

Director Huo had been on a business trip in Xiao City for the past few days, dealing with some important matters. Therefore, he had entrusted all department affairs, big and small, to Jiang Ming’s care.

Jiang Ming was capable, well-respected, and very responsible.

After hearing that Qin Donglai’s team had taken on too many patients, he had intentionally reduced his own team’s surgical load for the past two days.

Once Song Qi and Luo Ming were able to handle the remaining workload, Jiang Ming finally managed to free himself up.

The first thing he did was call Wu Ting, Qin Donglai, and Xiao Xixi for a small meeting.

”Dr. Qin, Sister Xiao, I heard you’ve been giving Wu Ting special training in laparoscopic cholecystectomy these past few days. However, there was a miscommunication, and you admitted too many patients to operate on in time. You even had to invite Jin Yu and Zhang Zhong to come bail you out.”

”I have to criticize you for this. You need to be more thorough in your work, communicate more, and discuss things more.”

”Sister Xiao told me before that there were also problems with patient turnover in the wards. As an emergency department, we cannot refuse to admit patients. We have to ensure we can still treat everyone else. We can’t tie up too many medical resources for one special surgical technique.”

”I know this is a special period for us as we’re trying to become a provincial key discipline, but we must consider the bigger picture and avoid any medical accidents.”

”Dr. Qin, to think you still need to call for outside help while the ward beds are full... it’s embarrassing if word gets out.”

Although Jiang Ming greatly admired Wu Ting and respected Qin Donglai, he couldn’t let them make a mistake on a matter of principle.

”So, here’s the plan. I’ve already intentionally reduced our group’s admissions for Wu’s Umbilical Hole laparoscopic appendectomies. From now on, I will fully assist you in clearing the backlog of patients who are waiting for surgery.”

Jiang Ming was young and energetic, so he was prepared to perform surgeries back-to-back to resolve the issue.

”As for the beds, if it really comes to it, Sister Xiao, you can arrange for extra beds to be added. We’ll get through this wave, and then we’ll manage admissions more reasonably.”

Listening to Jiang Ming’s lecture and suggestions, Xiao Xixi, Wu Ting, and Qin Donglai all smiled in amusement.

But Jiang Ming spoke too quickly, giving no one a chance to interrupt.

”Um, Director Jiang, your suggestions and line of thinking are completely correct. It’s just that... things have taken a turn. You probably don’t know yet, but we’ve recently been developing a new surgical technique.”

”Wu Ting and I can both perform it independently as the primary surgeon. We can absolutely handle the patients.”

”As for the ward turnover problem, with our new surgical technique, patients can be discharged on the same day. The turnover efficiency is three to five times that of a conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy.”

After Qin Donglai finished speaking, Xiao Xixi also confirmed it.

”Director Jiang, perhaps everyone has been too busy lately. We’ve all been developing our respective surgical techniques, and things have been in full swing, which led to a lag in communication.”

Wu Ting also presented the results from the past few days.

Looking at the surgical records, discharge times, and patient admission data, Jiang Ming was completely stunned.

”Is this for real?”

After a long moment, Jiang Ming finally recovered. With his expertise, he of course understood the value of this surgical technique and what it signified!

”Wu Ting, when Director Huo gets back, organize the data on this project and prepare a draft proposal. At the upcoming Xiao City academic conference, we’ll go find Professor Ma Mengchao. If we’re lucky and he takes a liking to it and recommends us, our department could land a national-level research grant!”

”National-level?”

’I never expected this,’ Qin Donglai thought. ’I’d almost given up on promotions and was ready to just coast as an attending physician, but now Wu Ting has given me such a huge surprise.’

”Alright then, you all continue with the surgeries. I’ll handle everything else in the department.”

「Three days passed quickly.」

Cheng Feng had become a regular fixture in the operating rooms and patient wards of the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department.

Every day, he would follow Lu Xuejun into surgery right on schedule, filming and recording everything, as if he were specifically creating a surgical record or a training video for Lu Xuejun.

After leaving the OR, Cheng Feng would then tirelessly record all sorts of data from the patients in the wards.

Seeing the various prognoses and related complications in the patients Lu Xuejun operated on, Cheng Feng gained a more direct appreciation for just how incredible Wu Ting’s surgery was.

Every day after work, Cheng Feng would go meet with Yasui to aggregate and compare their data. The comparison between the two was shocking!

’All I can say,’ he thought, ’is that Wu Ting’s new surgical technique completely trounces Dr. Lu’s traditional technique in every aspect!’

The first wave of patients—those transferred from Hepatobiliary Surgery and those contacted by Dr. Qin—had all been taken care of, and the first batch of patients had also been discharged.

Wu Ting immediately sent Lu Xuejun another message, requesting more patients.

Lu Xuejun was a little confused by this.

’Don’t tell me Wu Ting’s group still isn’t giving up and is admitting more patients. Aren’t they afraid they won’t be able to finish again?’

Director Cai had previously instructed him to fully cooperate with Wu Ting, so he didn’t say much and continued to arrange for the Hepatobiliary Surgery outpatient clinic to transfer suitable patients over.

He did, however, give Wu Ting a friendly warning not to overdo it and to perform a reasonable number of surgeries.

To Lu Xuejun’s surprise, Cheng Feng still followed him into surgery like clockwork.

It got to the point where Lu Xuejun and the other doctors in the department had grown accustomed to this junior doctor taking photos and notes for them every day.

Lu Xuejun was also very curious about what purpose his videos, photos, and surgical data would ultimately serve.

’Could it be,’ he wondered, ’that after Cheng Feng takes the recordings back, Wu Ting and those other beginners in the Emergency Department are gathering around to watch them as training materials, trying to absorb the key techniques?’

At the thought of so many emergency department doctors potentially studying his surgical videos, Lu Xuejun intentionally scheduled a few more laparoscopic cholecystectomies.

And what do you know, because someone was filming, his skills actually improved, reaching a new level!

After finishing his filming in the OR, Cheng Feng went back to the ward. Seeing that the first batch of patients was still there, he couldn’t help but feel a little emotional.

After all, the Emergency Department’s wards had already gone through three waves of patients. Moreover, the spirit and recovery status of the patients discharged on the same day were even better than those of Lu Xuejun’s patients who had been recuperating for over three days.

With Lu Xuejun’s unwitting help, the data for both the control and experimental groups of Wu Ting’s research project was gradually becoming more detailed and robust.

However, due to the high turnover rate, the Emergency Department’s ward turnover capacity completely surpassed that of Hepatobiliary Surgery. Consequently, the number of patients the Emergency Department could admit and operate on was several times that of Hepatobiliary Surgery.

Every morning, besides performing surgery, Wu Ting’s main task was to urge Lu Xuejun’s side to transfer more patients.

Amidst this constant stream of surgeries, the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department didn’t notice at first. But slowly, the department’s supply of cholecystectomy patients began to dry up.

This was a phenomenon that hadn’t occurred in many years!

Fan City had a huge permanent population, and City First Hospital was the most capable comprehensive hospital in all of Fan City. The Hepatobiliary Surgery Department, in particular, was top-tier. In the past, there was always a long line of patients waiting for surgery.

Sometimes, so many patients couldn’t get a bed that they had to go to surrounding hospitals for their procedures.

One morning, a resident reported to Lu Xuejun:

”Dr. Lu, I feel like something’s off with the Emergency Department. During this time, we’ve transferred over a hundred cholecystectomy patients to them. Plus, our own department has performed dozens of cholecystectomies. As a result, our supply of such patients has started to dwindle.”

”Our department’s beds are starting to sit empty. But the Emergency Department is still hounding us for more patients every day.”

”Even with our department’s ward capacity, we couldn’t possibly accept this many cholecystectomy patients. And the Emergency Department has to admit all sorts of other patients too. How are they managing it all?”

Lu Xuejun had recently been so immersed under Cheng Feng’s camera lens, completely focused on his surgeries and breaking through a years-long bottleneck, that he truly hadn’t noticed this anomaly!

’Something’s not right,’ he thought. ’Definitely not right!’

A sense of alarm rose in Lu Xuejun.

’Could the Emergency Department have been constantly inviting outside surgeons? But even if the operating rooms can handle the load, the wards can’t.’

’They couldn’t possibly be pulling some tricks just to prove to the hospital administration that the Emergency Department can handle a high volume of surgeries, could they?’

’But I haven’t heard of any Emergency Department patients being transferred to other departments. Don’t tell me they’re transferring them to other hospitals after the surgery?’

’The most terrifying possibility is... are they discharging patients prematurely, regardless of their recovery status?’

Uneasy, Lu Xuejun went to the Emergency Department himself to find Xiao Xixi and check the recent surgical records.

He quickly arrived at the Emergency Department. When Xiao Xixi saw it was Lu Xuejun, her personal bearer of good fortune, she was very cooperative.

Taking the surgical records, Lu Xuejun began to read. When he saw that all the cholecystectomy patients were discharged on the same day, he was utterly dumbfounded.

’Are Wu Ting and Qin Donglai insane?’
