Doctor: I Can Synthesize Infinite Entries

Chapter 101: Chapter 100: He Is a Doctor, He Cannot Let Someone Die

It had been a long time since Cai Qi had met such an interesting junior doctor—confident, poised, and articulate.

”Of course. Lu Xuejun, you’ll be in charge of coordinating with Dr. Wu. Arrange for suitable patients to go directly from the outpatient clinic to emergency surgery.”

Cai Qi didn’t think much of it. How many patients could one Wu Ting, learning to perform a few laparoscopic cholecystectomies, really take?

Fan City First Hospital’s Hepatobiliary Surgery Department was top-tier in all of Fan City. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have dared to apply for a provincial-level ERAS hepatobiliary surgery ward. They had a renowned reputation, so they had plenty of patients.

This would just let Wu Ting take some of the overflow, lightening the load on the department’s doctors.

”Dr. Wu, then it’s settled. My Hepatobiliary Surgery Department will fully support you in learning and performing these surgical techniques. When you have results to show, I’ll be coming to inspect them.”

Cai Qi didn’t take Wu Ting’s promise seriously. After all, laparoscopic cholecystectomy had been around for many years. While some teams had made minor achievements in cosmetic or minimally invasive approaches, she had never heard of any breakthroughs in reducing postoperative complications or sequelae in the clinical surgical field.

To achieve a real breakthrough, one would need to introduce a completely new guiding theory. But in Cai Qi’s view, that would have to be a cutting-edge theory from the international community, from abroad.

’Wu Ting actually wants to remove a gallbladder by collaborating with the National Medical Department, integrating National Medicine with modern medicine? Is he going to stick needles in the gallbladder? Or maybe treat it conservatively with moxibustion?’

Still, Cai Qi encouraged Wu Ting’s proactive attitude and willingness to try new things.

”Thank you so much, Director Cai.”

Wu Ting was overjoyed. He turned to Lu Xuejun and said, ”Dr. Lu, when I get back, I’ll draw up the inclusion criteria for the patients I need, as well as the number of patients, and submit it to you. I’ll have to trouble you with this.”

Hearing Wu Ting’s serious tone, Lu Xuejun readily agreed.

”No problem, Dr. Wu. I will definitely give you my full cooperation.”

”Everyone in our department is looking forward to your results.”

After the grand rounds ended, Wu Ting exchanged a few pleasantries with Director Cai and then left the hepatobiliary surgery inpatient area.

As soon as Wu Ting left, he immediately called Deputy Director Huang Hong.

”Director Huang, I was wondering if you’re familiar with the Qi Mechanism Theory of Ascending and Descending.”

”I’ve recently started performing laparoscopic cholecystectomies. With the support of the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department and our own department, I’m preparing to start a brand-new surgical technique.”

”I’d like to invite you to join my research group and be responsible for the intraoperative transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation...”

When Huang Hong heard Wu Ting’s idea and line of thought, she was both shocked and impressed.

”Dr. Wu, your idea is simply brilliant! This is the first time I’ve ever heard of someone wanting to apply National Medicine therapies during a cholecystectomy.”

”It would be my honor to join this research group.”

”Speaking of which, what a coincidence. This Qi Mechanism Theory of Ascending and Descending is Director Zhao’s specialty. I’ve learned a thing or two from him myself. How about this: once I finish up what I’m working on, I’ll go discuss it with Director Zhao.”

”After that, we can schedule a research cycle together. I will do everything I can to support you with this new surgical technique.”

”Last time, our integrated National Medicine and modern medicine tracheotomy earned an excellent reputation in the field.”

”I believe that this time, we can also achieve a remarkable breakthrough in the field of cholecystectomy.”

Huang Hong gave Wu Ting her one-hundred-percent support. She especially loved this path of integrating National Medicine with modern medicine; it deeply resonated with her.

Collaborating with Wu Ting was constantly expanding the boundaries of the National Medical Department. The more of these integrated surgical techniques they developed, the more significant it would be for the doctors in their department—the most direct benefit being an increase in income.

Wu Ting’s last integrated tracheotomy had allowed the National Medical Department to participate in many surgeries, and they had profited greatly from it.

After Wu Ting and Deputy Director Huang Hong reached a cooperation agreement, all that was left was to wait for Qin Donglai or Lu Xuejun to send patients over.

Wu Ting could finally take a break.

He happened to have talked with Zhu Zhu earlier and planned to find her for lunch today to express his gratitude, and maybe take a walk in the park near her radio station.

”Miss Zhu, I’m off work. I’m free today, are you? I’d like to treat you to lunch to thank you.”

Wu Ting had just sent the message when she replied instantly.

”Okay! Okay!”

”Then I’ll come pick you up in a bit. I don’t have anything this morning either.”

After all, Wu Ting was still just an intern with a pitifully low salary and no car.

So, Zhu Zhu was more than happy to drive Wu Ting around.

Zhu Zhu went to the garage to get her red Maserati Ghibli, one of the ”little rich girl’s” four favorite car models.

Out of the corner of her eye, she happened to see that Feng Yuefang’s car was still in the garage.

Zhu Zhu had never liked Feng Yuefang, so she didn’t pay it much mind.

「City First Hospital, Emergency Department.」

Feng Shanhe had been sitting for a long time. He had gone to the restroom a few times, but he still couldn’t get through to his daughter on the phone.

’Should I go home? My chest still hurts a bit. Besides, what if Fangfang arrives soon and can’t find me?’

Feng Shanhe decided to wait a little longer. But suddenly, a sharp pain shot through him.

A crushing pain appeared in his precordial region, behind his sternum.

Feng Shanhe took out the medicine he had for angina and swallowed it. However, even after enduring the pain for a while, it didn’t get any better.

Feng Shanhe took out his phone. ”Fangfang, Dad... I don’t think I’m going to make it.”

As he said this, the world started spinning. He felt a tightness in his chest, a sense of dread, and began to sweat, overwhelmed by a feeling of impending doom. Feng Shanhe collapsed in the waiting area.

The people around him cried out in alarm.

The emergency department’s security guard and the triage nurse both heard the commotion and rushed over.

An Jin had just changed his clothes and finished his shift, ready to head home.

He also noticed the commotion and, driven by a doctor’s instinct, rushed over.

”What’s going on?”

The nurse saw An Jin and immediately said,

”An elderly man suddenly fainted. We don’t know what’s wrong.”

An Jin squeezed through the crowd and looked. The old man seemed very familiar.

It wasn’t until he squatted down and saw the emergency lab report clutched in the patient’s hand that he remembered.

”I know this patient. I diagnosed him much earlier. It’s a myocardial infarction. He told me his daughter was coming right away to arrange for his admission and surgery.”

”Elder Feng... Elder Feng...”

An Jin leaned in, trying to call out to the patient.

However, Feng Shanhe was already in shock.

Several thoughts flashed through An Jin’s mind.

’Technically, I’m already off the clock. I could hand this patient over to Luo Ming to handle.’

’But Luo Ming doesn’t know the situation, and I was the one who first diagnosed him. I know his condition best.’

’It’s obvious the patient’s condition has suddenly worsened into an acute myocardial infarction. If he doesn’t get surgery immediately, he most likely won’t make it.’

’But he clearly hasn’t been able to contact his family, or maybe they’re busy and haven’t arrived yet.’

’In any case, it’s highly likely we won’t have a signature from the family before we have to start life-saving measures.’

’A surgical consent form is a doctor’s lifeline. If we wait for a signature, wait for the family to arrive, the patient will almost certainly die.’

’But if I try to save him without a signature... forget about the surgery failing, what if it succeeds and the family refuses to acknowledge it?’

’The incident with Ding Yue is still fresh in my mind.’

’I’m just an ordinary junior doctor. No background, no connections. Recently, Jiang Ming cast me aside like a worn-out shoe, forcing me into the humiliating position of being an assistant to a junior doctor like Wu Ting.’

’What if I lose my job because of this reckless act?’

An Jin hesitated.

”Dr. An...”

The nurse called his name, waiting for his orders. He saw her expectant gaze, and out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the hopeful looks from the surrounding crowd of patients.

An Jin suddenly understood what Ding Yue must have felt back then.

He also remembered the tone Director Huo had set at the conference.

’I am a doctor.’

’My duty is to save lives and treat the sick.’

An Jin knew he was just an ordinary junior doctor, but at a time like this, he had to live up to the white coat he wore.

”...Take him to the resuscitation room immediately! Start him on oxygen, put him on an ECG monitor, and administer coronary vasodilators...”

”...I’m reporting to Director Huo right now and notifying the hospital’s general duty office... I’m going to operate on the patient immediately...”

”...Have Sister Xiao keep trying to contact the patient’s family...”

After making the calls, An Jin immediately went to change into his surgical scrubs.

「Fan City TV Station, Underground Garage.」

The signal was already bad, and on top of that, Feng Yuefang was on the verge of an emotional breakdown. Her phone, set to silent, had fallen under the passenger seat.

It wasn’t until she heard the roar of an engine and noticed Zhu Zhu’s car driving away that she fished out her phone and checked the time.

She was suddenly jolted back to reality—her father was still at City First Hospital.

She turned on her phone and immediately saw a string of missed calls and a voice message from her father.

”Myocardial infarction, myocardial infarction!”

Feng Yuefang also saw a landline number, most likely from City First Hospital.

’Hearing my father’s last message... could he be having an acute myocardial infarction?’

’That requires emergency surgery, but I wasn’t there... and I just caused a huge scene in the emergency department.’

’Would the emergency department really operate without a family member present, without a signature?’

’What if, because I missed the calls and forgot to go, my father couldn’t get the surgery he needed...’

The more Feng Yuefang thought about it, the more terrified she became. Tears of regret streamed down her face, and she slapped herself hard across the cheek.

She immediately started the car and sped toward City First Hospital.

Just then, her phone rang again. It was the number from City First Hospital.

”Hello, this is Xiao Xixi from the City First Hospital Emergency Department. Your father...”

Hearing it was Xiao Xixi from City First Hospital, Feng Yuefang was overwhelmed with a mix of complex emotions. She felt too ashamed to speak, but her father’s condition was paramount.

Taking a deep breath, she pleaded in a trembling voice, on the verge of tears:

”Nurse Xiao, it’s Feng Yuefang. I was in the wrong last night. I shouldn’t have incited that mob. I know I was wrong. I’m so sorry.”

”I’m on my way now. Can you please operate on my father first? I consent to the surgery.”

”I’ll sign as soon as I get there. I’m begging you, please operate on my father. I won’t cause any more trouble, I promise I won’t.”

”I’m sorry, I’m begging you.”

The person on the other end of the line was clearly taken aback for a moment, but their voice remained steady, professional, and calm as they explained:

”I was calling to confirm the matter of your father’s surgery. Because you couldn’t get here in time and your father’s life was on the line, our Dr. An reported to the hospital leadership and initiated the green channel protocol. We are already in the process of saving your father. I’m informing you now and also hoping to get your consent.”

”I consent, I consent! Thank you so much, Dr. An! Thank you so much, Nurse Xiao!”

”I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. I’m not human. I’ll be right there... Thank you... Thank you...”

Feng Yuefang’s eyes were already red, filled with both guilt and gratitude.

By the time Feng Yuefang arrived at City First Hospital, Feng Shanhe was out of danger.

An Jin walked out of the operating room, changed out of his scrubs, and his heart finally calmed.

He didn’t know if he had done the right thing, or what the consequences would be.

But he was a doctor.

He couldn’t just stand by and watch someone die.

After resting for a moment, An Jin prepared to go to the ward to give some instructions, and then finally go home for some much-needed rest.
