Chapter 108: Chapter 107: Hospital Meeting: Time to Report Phase Achievements

Lu Xuejun took a photo of the record. He didn’t waste any more words on Xiao Xixi and left the Emergency Surgery Department.

This was a serious matter. If a patient was discharged hastily and an accident occurred later, the consequences would be severe.

After all, Lu Xuejun was just an attending physician in the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery. He didn’t dare make a big scene over something like this.

After returning to the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Lu Xuejun thought for a moment and decided to report the matter to Director Cai first.

’It’s better to let Director Cai handle this. He should probably check in with Director Huo first to see how to proceed.’

”What on earth is Wu Ting doing? And Qin Donglai, too.”

Lu Xuejun sighed. He really couldn’t understand. Were the people in the Emergency Department trying to cause a major medical malpractice incident while Director Huo was away?

It was true that some cholecystectomy patients could be discharged on the same day, depending on their individual constitution. However, it was impossible for every single patient to have no complications or after-effects.

The wards of the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery were filled with dozens of such patients, and all of them stayed for at least three days.

Lu Xuejun directly forwarded the admission and discharge records for this batch of cholecystectomy patients from the Emergency Surgery Department to Director Cai.

Director Cai was stunned after reading it. This matter could be either trivial or huge. He immediately contacted Huo Yun.

Huo Yun had originally planned to stay in Xiao City for a few more days. Upon hearing the news, he thanked Director Cai, asked him to keep it confidential for the time being, and then rushed back to City First Hospital.

After Director Huo returned to his department, he immediately summoned Wu Ting, Qin Donglai, Jiang Ming, Xiao Xixi, and the others to his office.

Worn out from his travels these past few days, Director Huo looked as if he had aged several years from exhaustion.

Today, he had rushed back, driving all the way on the highway without even stopping to eat. He was in no mood for it.

When Wu Ting and the others arrived, Huo Yun slammed his phone down on the desk.

”Jiang Ming, Wu Ting, Qin Donglai, what on earth has been going on while I’ve been away from the department?”

”If Director Cai from Hepatobiliary Surgery hadn’t tipped me off, I would have had no idea you’d caused such a huge mess!”

”I told you to go all-out in advancing laparoscopic diagnosis and treatment techniques during this time, and I agreed to let Wu Ting begin special training in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. But you still have to follow basic objective principles, don’t you?”

”It’s only been a few days, and you’ve admitted and discharged over a hundred patients. All of them discharged on the same day?”

”Wu Ting is still young; he might not understand the complications and dangers after a cholecystectomy. But Jiang Ming, Qin Donglai, don’t you two know? And Sister Xiao, you’re a veteran of this department. Did you just pretend you didn’t see anything?”

The more Huo Yun spoke, the angrier he became. These were the people he trusted the most, the ones he felt most at ease with. And this was the result they gave him?

Seeing Huo Yun looking both heartbroken and furious...

Jiang Ming felt as if he were seeing himself from two days ago. He waited until Director Huo had completely vented all his frustration.

Only then did Jiang Ming speak slowly.

”Director Huo, please calm down. We saw how overworked and tired you were in Xiao City recently, so we originally planned to give you a surprise when you got back.”

”During this period, with the support of the hospital’s funding and equipment, under your brilliant leadership, Director Huo, and with the full cooperation of the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Wu Ting and Qin Donglai, together with Deputy Director Huang Hong from the National Medical Department, have developed a brand-new Surgical Technique.”

”Through experiments with over a hundred patients and by using a control group from the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, we have already achieved preliminary results with this new Surgical Technique. Our research group has been successfully formed, and the related academic paper is already in its initial draft form.”

After Jiang Ming gave a concise explanation, he handed it over to Wu Ting to give a detailed report.

Wu Ting directly took out the initial draft of the paper that Yasui and Cheng Feng had compiled over the past few days.

”Director Huo, you can read the initial draft of our paper later for the specific details.”

”The subject of our research is a brand-new Surgical Technique: Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Combined with Qi Mechanism Ascending-Descending Regulation. By combining National Medicine with modern medicine, we’ve focused on solving the post-operative complications and recovery pain points of traditional cholecystectomies.”

”Based on the prognosis of over one hundred patients during this period, we can now formally announce that this Surgical Technique can successfully solve the pain points of post-operative complications, reducing patient discharge time from the original three to five days to an average of 7.3 hours. We have truly made same-day discharge possible for cholecystectomies!”

”Furthermore, this paper can be incorporated as a key Surgical Technique for our key specialty department of laparoscopic diagnosis and treatment. At the same time, we can also collaborate with the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery to help them apply for an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) ward.”

Listening to Wu Ting’s report...

Director Huo was in disbelief. He never expected that in the few days he was gone, his department would incubate such an impactful, brand-new Surgical Technique.

Since the last hospital-wide staff meeting, the hospital administration had formed a supervision group to conduct regular assessments and evaluations of the Emergency Department. Director Huo had been feeling immense pressure. He had been in Xiao City recently for academic exchange and study, while also scouting for new Surgical Techniques and talent to recruit.

Building a key specialty department required a two-pronged approach: cultivating the internal team and recruiting external talent.

He never thought Wu Ting’s research group would give him such a massive surprise. With this Surgical Technique, his performance indicators for at least the next six months were already met.

Huo Yun could now confidently ask the hospital administration for more funding.

Looking at the list of names on the draft paper—corresponding author Wu Ting, first author Huang Hong, second author Qin Donglai... even Yasui and Cheng Feng were on the list.

Huo Yun was extremely pleased. In just a few days, Wu Ting had already assembled a complete team, which would form the core foundation of the Emergency Surgery Department in the future.

Especially Wu Ting. The so-called corresponding author is the overall head of a research project, responsible for its funding, design, and quality control of the paper’s writing, as well as communicating with the journal during the submission, peer review, and publication process.

From an intellectual property standpoint, the research findings also belong to the corresponding author.

Normally, given Wu Ting’s age and qualifications, this would be impossible. However, Wu Ting was indeed the one responsible for the core design of the entire project. He was also the one who contacted other departments for cooperation. And with his current network, he could even handle the subsequent review and publication process independently.

Huo Yun couldn’t help but marvel; Wu Ting’s growth had far exceeded his expectations.

”Good, good, good.”

”Wu Ting, Qin Donglai, Jiang Ming, and also Yasui and Cheng Feng, you’ve all done an excellent job. This research project couldn’t have come at a better time.”

”The hospital-wide staff meeting is just around the corner. I will present the initial draft of your paper to the hospital administration and fight for more funding for you. Also, a few department directors were unconvinced about our Emergency Department receiving key support from the hospital. This time, we can shut them up.”

”Also, in a few days, there will be a high-level academic exchange conference in Xiao City with Professor Ma Mengchao. Wu Ting, Jiang Ming, you two will come with me. If we can submit the draft paper to Professor Ma and win his favor, having him as one of the recommenders for the project would give us a great chance of securing a national-level Science foundation project.”

”This will be of great significance to every one of you in the research group, to our entire department, and even to the whole of City First Hospital. Work hard for the next few days. I will also review it for you and help you further refine and optimize the entire paper.”

After Huo Yun gave his instructions, Wu Ting’s team went back and continued their work on refining and optimizing the paper.

Overjoyed, Huo Yun also began to adjust his upcoming work schedule and plans. Many of his future strategies could now be moved up.

In his busyness, he forgot to reply and communicate with Director Cai.

Soon, it was time for another hospital-wide staff meeting.

Besides the usual work reports and suggestions, there were two main topics on the agenda for this meeting.

One was the plan for the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery to apply to establish Fan City’s first ERAS ward on behalf of City First Hospital.

The second was an evaluation of the progress of the Emergency Department’s key specialty development. The level of future support in terms of funding, equipment, and other aspects would be decided based on its overall performance.

Of course, there would also be a phased evaluation and review of the Emergency Department’s acquisition of the former cardiothoracic surgery operating room. After all, many department directors had objected at the time, and now it was time to see if the results were convincing enough.

Dean Tang Long had given his full support back then, facing immense pressure. This would also be a test of whether his vision and decision were wise.

Therefore, as the staff meeting neared its end, the atmosphere was calm on the surface but turbulent underneath. All eyes were watching.

Director Cai had already alerted Huo Yun beforehand, but Huo Yun had avoided the topic. Therefore, at the staff meeting, he still prepared to report the matter of the Emergency Surgery Department indiscriminately admitting patients and then discharging them against all common sense.

After all, this was a very serious matter. Moreover, it concerned his own department, as the vast majority of those patients had been transferred from his department. If he didn’t make it clear at today’s meeting and something went wrong later, his own department would be implicated.

Director Cai felt he had done all he could. Since Huo Yun hadn’t given him an explanation in private, he had no choice but to address it publicly.

This would also serve as an explanation to everyone. At the same time, it could deflect some of the attention, since the progress on his own Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery’s ERAS ward was not going smoothly and had nothing impressive to show for it.

As the head of the department, Cai Qi had to prioritize his department’s interests. Better you die than I do.
