Dimensional Codex System: I'm really not a cultist!

Chapter 848: Chapter 847: Adventure Journey in the Main World (V)

Hundreds of ghouls roared and charged at Fang Zheng and his companions, their mouths wide open, emitting soul-piercing screams, looking as terrifying as specters.

For ordinary people, these ghouls could be quite challenging to deal with. Their skin was as hard as iron, their roars could shake human will and spirit, and their claws were sharp and poisonous. If accidentally scratched, one could get poisoned, and if the toxin wasn’t neutralized quickly, it could be fatal, resulting in joining the ranks of these undead creatures.

However, for Fang Zheng and his companions, these ghouls were nothing more than an appetizer.

”Attack!”

At Fang Zheng’s command, Kurumi, Walnut, and Fina raised their weapons and charged toward the ghouls.

Needless to say, Fang Zheng swung his greatsword, sweeping through a group, accompanied by the rising primordial fire, ghouls wailed as they were turned to ashes, their souls and remaining bodies absorbed entirely by Fang Zheng as firewood.

Beside Fang Zheng, Kurumi also discarded her cloak, donning her red and black spirit armor again. She raised her two guns with a high laugh, pulling the triggers against the ghouls in front of her, smashing each charging ghoul into pieces. As an elf, Kurumi’s attribute level far surpassed that of humans, naturally making short work of these ghouls.

On another side, Walnut was unusually courageous. Although the shovel in her hand was still the one she brought from the Bio-World, it was no ordinary shovel. It had been modified by the Nymph, employing Forerunner’s particle reinforcement technology and enchants like ”Sharpening Technique” and ”Magic Dispel.” Facing the zombies in front of her, Walnut swung her shovel down, instantly splitting her opponent’s head in two. The girl gripped the shovel handle firmly, shouting and swinging it around powerfully, limbs flying everywhere, and in the blink of an eye, several ghouls were chopped to bits by Walnut.

However, the bravest one was undoubtedly Fina.

Though this battle differed from the one against goblins before, the young priestess didn’t have her Meteor Hammer with her, she showed no sign of intimidation. Fang Zheng saw Fina chanting a divine art softly for herself, adding several buffs, then raising her staff and smashing it down on the ghouls in front of her.

The short staff, no longer than a forearm, smashed down on a ghoul’s head, and it burst like a watermelon. Simultaneously, a flash exploded, spreading outward in a circle.

The ghouls touched by this circle of light began to burn with white flames. The flames from the Holy Light purifying their bodies and souls, and taking advantage of the pause in the ghouls’ assault, Fina rushed in, swirling her staff before swinging it forward again!

”Squelch.”

Another head burst like a watermelon.

The number of ghouls wasn’t too large, and since Fang Zheng and the others were all of transcendent power, the truth is, if not for letting Kurumi and Walnut experience the battle environment of the Main World, Fang Zheng could have obliterated them all with a single Solar Flame Burst.

Nevertheless, within a mere ten minutes, all the ghouls that besieged them were swept away, not leaving even half alive — after all, they were already dead.

”How do you feel?”

Fang Zheng glanced around, ensuring no enemies were left, then with a grin turned to Kurumi and Walnut. Kurumi, slightly out of breath, somewhat sheepishly spoke.

”Indeed, they were formidable... Hmm, seems I was a bit overconfident.”

Saying this, Kurumi showed a slight expression of displeasure, unsurprising as among them, Kurumi destroyed the fewest enemies in the battle. Though her shots never missed, the others relied on area attacks.

Fang Zheng’s single sword swing felled over a dozen ghouls at once, and Walnut’s shovel could also chop down three or four, not to mention Fina, whose staff swings were fierce and dynamic, accounting for about a quarter of the kills.

In comparison, although Kurumi managed one shot per ghoul, there was a time gap, and she didn’t summon any doubles. Yet, clearly, Kurumi was not convinced.

”If I used the City of Time-Eaters, no matter how many there were, I could easily deal with them!”

”These things... do you really want to eat them?”

Fang Zheng glanced at a ghoul corpse not far away. Though it barely maintained a human shape, outwardly it looked like a mummy, just a skin-covered skeleton with a rotten tongue and sharp teeth... Kurumi stared for a moment, then turned her head silently, saying nothing.

”I’m really surprised Lady Fina is so capable...”

Walnut looked at Fina, panting heavily, unsure what to say. Like Fang Zheng, she was initially deceived by Fina’s appearance, thinking as a cleric — sure, clerics are healers, what combat power could they have? More suited for backline support and healing.

But when Walnut saw Fina roll up her sleeves and charge in with her staff, smashing ghoul heads to bits, her eyes nearly popped out!

”Uh... Lady Fina? Are you okay?”

After hesitating, Walnut stepped forward to ask, and hearing her concern, Fina turned to look at her, shaking her head.

”I’m fine, what’s the matter?”

”No, it’s just... well...”

Looking at Fina’s staff, covered in blood, and then at Fina, Walnut found herself at a loss for words. She glanced at the ghouls lying at Fina’s feet, struggling to form her thoughts after a while.

”Uh... are you really alright?”

Walnut knew well, killing wasn’t easy. In the Bio-World, to protect others, she too had to fight zombies. Yet afterward, she often had nightmares, sometimes unable to sleep. As a girl accustomed to peace, Walnut was naturally quite averse to killing, even though it wasn’t humans she faced, but zombies. Those were still students and teachers from her school!

If not for protecting others, Walnut wouldn’t have been able to hold out.

Though she was growing accustomed to fighting, not as opposed as before, seeing Fina now, she instinctively worried about any psychological shadows from her actions.

”Oh... I see.”

Although Walnut’s words were somewhat disjointed, Fina seemed to understand, responding soon afterward. She smiled gently at Walnut, shaking her head.

”It’s nothing, Walnut. At first, it was indeed uncomfortable, but we are holy practitioners. Our duty is to bring peace to the fallen, our obligation and responsibility. Moreover... by doing so, we help relieve their suffering, allowing their souls to rest peacefully... ha!”

Saying this, Fina noticed something, dashing forward, her staff swinging heavily down on a ghoul attempting to rise, smashing its head completely.

”Oh—!”

Seeing this, Walnut let out a low cry, instinctively taking two steps back, feeling a slight headache — wait, even though I’m a zombie now, I don’t want to rest yet, I still wish to live longer!

At that moment, Walnut felt a pat on her shoulder. Turning, she saw Fang Zheng beside her.

”Alright, don’t mind it, it’s just cultural differences...”

”.........”

Indeed, it was cultural differences.

After taking care of the ghouls, the next question was: where did they come from?

”This village doesn’t have that many people.”

Gazing over the ghoul corpses sprawling on the ground, Fang Zheng shook his head. Though he hadn’t counted accurately during the battle, he roughly estimated there were over three hundred ghouls attacking them, yet the villagers, when he glanced over this morning, seemed to number just over a hundred.

Moreover, even more baffling, everything seemed normal before, how did things turn to this in the blink of an eye?

Thinking this, Fang Zheng seemed to realize something.

”Lady Fina, let’s check out Uncle Rand’s place.”

”Okay.”

Though unsure of Fang Zheng’s intentions, Fina nodded. Soon, the group once again reached Uncle Rand’s hilltop home.

However, as they climbed the steps, Walnut couldn’t help but exclaim.

”Eh? What’s going on here??”
