Super Gene Hunting Ground

Chapter 91: Chapter 91 Enhanced Gene

The night watchman didn’t hear the howl of the mutant dog and turned to look.

”Hey, this guy is actually eating those insects.”

”Let it eat, as long as it doesn’t howl. There are so many on the ground, let’s give them all to it, and we’ll enjoy some peace and quiet.”

So, the three people threw a pile of mutated insect carcasses to the mutant dog, which didn’t hold back and greedily ate them.

On Long Yongjun’s side, nothing special happened until dawn, though many insects were killed.

Yang Xiao was awakened by the aroma of grilled meat. He sat up to see Deng Xiao poking a large piece of meat with a stick and bringing it to him.

Yang Xiao sniffed it,

”Smells great. What kind of meat is this?”

”A rat, at least about 30 pounds, which I cut down with one stroke.”

Deng Xiao spoke casually; over a month ago, she was a gentle and classy girl, but now she’s turned into a tough woman.

Yang Xiao took a bite and found the taste pretty good.

Deng Xiao had a small packet of salt with her and had already sprinkled it on the grilled meat.

Long Yongjun was holding a roasted rat leg in his left hand, gnawing it in big bites while his right hand wielded a golden short knife, swinging at any insect that approached the firelight.

Yang Xiao glanced at the firelight and saw that the insects being chopped to death by the two had piled up like a small hill.

”Boss, I tell you, we’ve collected at least 50 Genetic Fragments. Sister Deng Xiao and I are competing to see who collects more Genetic Fragments.”

The firelight attracted a lot of mutated insects, inadvertently allowing the two to collect Genetic Fragments. Compared to fighting in the woods, this was outright delightful.

”Wake up Qin Yu and Chen Fei; you two should rest. Nothing out of the ordinary, right?”

”No, just that the insects have decreased, not as many as at first.”

Long Yongjun seemed reluctant to stop, his eyes darting around, searching for flying insects.

A large mosquito buzzed by, and just as Long Yongjun was about to swing his knife, he saw the mosquito split into two in a flash of the blade and fall to the ground.

”Boss, you’re a monster; how can you be that fast?”

Long Yongjun had to concede to Yang Xiao’s incredible speed with the knife.

”Alright, stop playing around, go to sleep. Haven’t you guys had enough fighting during the day?”

At this point, Qin Yu and Chen Fei were also awakened by Deng Xiao, and they gathered around the campfire to enjoy a delicious midnight snack.

Emulating Yang Xiao, Long Yongjun lay across two tree trunks to sleep and soon started snoring.

Yang Xiao, Qin Yu, and Chen Fei munched on grilled meat while chatting, seeing who could kill more insects, and suddenly found the night not so bad after all.

”Shit, what the hell did you do?”

Suddenly, an angry shout came from afar; it was from Xiao Hei.

”Brother Xiao Hei, we didn’t do anything, we just killed some insects and saw that the mutant dog liked to eat them. After it ate, it didn’t howl anymore, so we just let it eat...”

”Smack!”

A loud slap.

Xiao Hei stared at the three men with a dark face, viciously pointing at them:

”You’re all courting death, you know? The mutant dog consumed so many mutated insects, its internal energy is soaring. If it breaks through to the Enhanced Gene state at this moment, we might all die.”

”Ah? Brother Xiao Hei, we didn’t know...”

The three young night guards were terrified.

Kong Tianqing and others also woke up.

Kong Tianqing waved a hand at Xiao Hei, saying:

”Alright, there’s no point scolding now. It’s up to our luck.”

After speaking, he glanced at the mutant dog lying on the nearby ground, his expression suddenly changing as he said:

”Oh no!”

”Qing Brother, what is it?”

Xiao Hei asked.

”Look at the dog’s four paws, aren’t they changing color?”

Xiao Hei was taken aback, pulled a burning log from the campfire, and held it close to the mutant dog. In the flickering firelight, he saw the dog’s four paws turning a pale gold color, and it was spreading upwards.

Kong Tianqing drew a golden longsword, his face grave as he stared at the mutant dog on the ground.

”Everyone, be alert. This mutant dog is about to break through to the Enhanced Gene stage. Once it breaks through, its combat power will multiply, and we might not be its match. The only way now is to strike it together the moment it breaks through the Enhanced Gene stage.”

”Boss, can’t we just kill it now?”

Someone asked.

Xiao Hei glared at him, scolding:

”Damn, we’ve sacrificed five brothers, wasted so much time and effort hunting this mutant dog, all to kill it when it breaks through to the Enhanced Gene stage and get it to drop the Wolf Skin Gold Armor. Killing it now will only yield an ordinary Wolf Skin Hard Armor, isn’t that a huge loss?”

The others didn’t dare say more, each holding their weapons, nervously watching the mutant dog on the ground.

Initially, only the dog’s four feet turned pale gold, but slowly the gold began to spread to its body, with streaks of golden light appearing on the mutant dog.

Yang Xiao and the others heard Kong Tianqing’s words loud and clear.

”Boss, are monsters at the Enhanced Gene stage really that powerful?”

Chen Fei asked.

”Absolutely. I’ve heard from Gu Bo at the Genetic Store that the current mutated creatures are just at the primitive mutation stage, and all are evolving constantly. I just didn’t expect the evolution speed to be so fast; this mutant dog is actually about to break through to the Enhanced Gene stage.”

”If they can’t kill the Enhanced Gene dog, what do we do?”

Qin Yu asked.

Yang Xiao looked towards where Kong Tianqing and the others were, seeing them circling the mutant dog, as golden lines flashed on the ground.

Kong Tianqing and the others were gambling, betting they could kill the mutant dog at the moment it completes its mutation and obtain rare equipment.

”Wake Deng Xiao and Long Yongjun, we need to get ready to leave.”

Qin Yu and Chen Fei woke the two, and the four looked at Yang Xiao.

”Boss, why are we leaving? It’s the middle of the night; where can we go?”

Yang Xiao glanced at Qin Yu, and asked,

”If you two fly now, can you navigate?”

The two shook their heads,

”Everywhere’s foggy, there’s no starlight at night to find our way.”

”What if we hide in the woods?”

”The woods are a dangerous killing ground. You can’t see the mutated creatures lurking at the treetops, around you, or in the grass. A spider could bite, a mosquito could bite, unknown insects could bite, and we might die too.”

Yang Xiao pondered for a moment, clenched his jaw, and said,

”Then we’ll gamble with our fate!”

”Gamble?”

The four looked at Yang Xiao.

”You figure, if that mutant dog breaks through the Enhanced Gene stage, its power will increase, and if it kills Kong Tianqing and the others, won’t it immediately come for us for revenge?”

The four nodded, especially Long Yongjun, who, remembering how he slashed the mutant dog several times during the day, realized the dog, notoriously vengeful, would surely seek him out.

In this dark night, even hiding in the forest, the dogs would certainly find them with their keen sense of smell.

”And if Kong Tianqing and the others kill the mutant dog?” Qin Yu asked.

”The consequences might be worse than the mutant dog. Especially for you and Deng Xiao, Xiao Hei and the others have been eyeing you with evil intent for a while. If they kill the mutant dog and get the gear it drops, we’ll be in deep trouble.”

”Ah!”

Qin Yu and Deng Xiao shivered.

”Boss, you want to gamble on a third outcome, right?”

Chen Fei turned to look at Yang Xiao.
