Super Gene Hunting Ground

Chapter 87: Chapter 87 Encounter with Mutation Wolves

Working in a team provides more opportunities to hone one’s skills. As long as these primary-level skills are used frequently enough to reach a certain level of proficiency, they will be upgraded by one level.

Qin Yu and Deng Xiao’s Feather Arrow Skills did not improve because they participated less in battles.

Around noon, Yang Xiao and the others climbed to the peak of a small mountain. They found a safe place to sit down for a rest and have lunch.

”Boss, this morning we collected over 200 genetic fragments and 3 weapons. If we continue like this, are we going to strike it rich?”

”Greedy, we’re far from getting rich. Taking you out for hunting is to train everyone’s skills, and also to gather more genetic fragments. Being with a large group, while lively, means hundreds of people storm a hill together, crushing through, leaving few opportunities for individual skill development, slowing down upgrades.”

Yang Xiao handed two weapons to Qin Yu and Deng Xiao, both of which were longswords with +3 strength.

Qin Yu and Deng Xiao accepted the weapons a bit embarrassed and said:

”We’ve been flying above and haven’t helped much, how can we accept such valuable weapons?”

”Don’t say that. Without your open path early on, we wouldn’t have been so smooth. This thick fog is annoying. Besides, we’ll be spending a lot of time together in the future, no need to mind such things.”

Qin Yu and Deng Xiao no longer hesitated and gladly accepted the weapons.

The five of them had a simple lunch, rested a while, then headed down the mountain, fighting their way through.

As Yang Xiao and the others were joyfully battling, Qin Yu suddenly descended from the air, looking anxious, and said:

”Yang Xiao, something’s wrong, there’s a giant wolf at the foot of the mountain.”

”A giant wolf?”

Yang Xiao was briefly stunned; how could there be a wolf here?

”Deng Xiao and I flew to the valley looking for a suitable route home and discovered a giant wolf in the valley jungle. It looked panicked, with wounds on its body still bleeding.”

Compared to these mutated ants, mosquitoes, and insects, a wolf already qualifies as a more terrifying mutated beast. Yang Xiao spent the day killing, with the biggest mutated creatures being squirrels and rabbits, and even then, they required a group to encircle and kill.

He couldn’t be sure about dealing with a wolf.

Long Yongjun and Chen Fei looked terrified upon hearing this.

Yang Xiao pondered for a moment, then asked:

”How far are we from the valley now?”

”About 700-800 meters straight distance.”

”You and Deng Xiao continue observing to see what’s going on, and be safe.”

”Rest assured, we’re in the air; no matter how formidable the wolf is, it can’t reach us.”

After Qin Yu flew away, Yang Xiao looked at the path Qin Yu had cleared in the thick fog and said:

”Let’s slowly move forward along this path; everyone, be careful not to alarm the valley wolf.”

Yang Xiao, Chen Fei, and Long Yongjun advanced through the forest, avoiding mutated creatures whenever possible. When not avoidable, they killed them with a sword thrust.

Deng Xiao hovered above the giant wolf, having already attracted its attention.

”Woof, woof...”

The giant wolf howled relentlessly at Deng Xiao who spiraled in the sky, looking fierce.

From a distance, Yang Xiao laughed upon hearing:

”What wolf? Clearly, it’s a dog.”

Chen Fei and Long Yongjun agreed:

”I still remember over a month ago, you killed that Black Dog on the playground; it was quite formidable before completely mutating, and this dog now is probably even more so.”

”How did this dog end up in the Biyun Mountain Forest?”

The trio crept to within 200-300 meters of the mutated dog, the dog in the valley seemingly heard the commotion, suddenly barking madly towards where Yang Xiao and the others were lurking.

”Woof, woof, woof...”

From above, Qin Yu flew over again and told Yang Xiao and the others:

”Boss, this giant wolf is more than 2 meters tall, over 4 meters long, looking terrifying.”

”It’s a dog, not a wolf.”

Yang Xiao said with a laugh.

Qin Yu was taken aback and innocently said:

”Aren’t wolves and dogs the same?”

Yang Xiao swallowed and replied,

”Alright, I’ve never seen a wolf either, but you said the dog was injured, are the injuries serious?”

”There are a few wounds on its back, deep enough to show flesh, and several on its belly too.”

”Do you think the few of us can kill this wolf... dog?”

”All five of us?”

Qin Yu was a bit unsure, terror reflecting in her eyes, and she shook her head.

”Alright, how about this: you and Deng Xiao harass that wolf first. Don’t you both have Feathered Arrows? Shoot it from the sky till it looks like a porcupine.”

”Hmm, that sounds good. No matter how formidable it is, two hundred arrows ought to kill it?”

Chen Fei chimed in.

Qin Yu hesitated a moment and cautiously said:

”Deng Xiao and I will try.”

Qin Yu flew over to Deng Xiao’s side; after a brief discussion, the two began attacking the ground’s dog.

”Whoosh, whoosh,” two feathered arrows tore through the air, aimed at the mutated dog.

Previously barking madly towards Yang Xiao and the others, the giant mutated dog suddenly felt the piercing sound and swiftly dodged the speeding feathered arrows.

The speed of the mutated dog amazed Qin Yu and Deng Xiao.

Attacked by surprise, the mutated dog shifted its attention away from Yang Xiao and the others, instead barking wildly at the sky,

”Woof, woof, woof...”

Qin Yu and Deng Xiao felt emboldened as the ground dog couldn’t attack them, and they fired arrows ceaselessly, attacking from different directions, one from the front, one from behind.

Although the ground’s mutated dog reacted quickly, it was somewhat distressed under the pincer attack from Qin Yu and Deng Xiao. After dodging the first dozen arrows, it occasionally got hit.

However, Qin Yu and Deng Xiao’s Feathered Arrow Skill was at a low level with limited attack damage. Even when hitting the mutated dog, the arrows merely broke its skin, causing no significant harm.

The mutated dog roared in fury continuously, while Qin Yu and Deng Xiao took increasing pleasure in shooting, launching one feathered arrow after another.

With Qin Yu and Deng Xiao diverting the mutated dog’s attention, Yang Xiao and the others pushed forward to within about a hundred meters from the mutated dog.

At this distance, they could clearly see Qin Yu and Deng Xiao’s battle with the mutated dog and the mutated dog’s specific appearance.

”My goodness, how can this dog be so big? It’s a bull!”

”Then you haven’t seen a mutated bull yet; it’d probably look like a small mountain now.”

”Those dog’s teeth are like daggers; if bitten, you’d likely be done for.”

Chen Fei said, feeling as if she were being bitten, instinctively grabbing onto Yang Xiao’s arm.

Yang Xiao rolled his eyes at Chen Fei,

”Look at you, the dog isn’t even close, and you’re already terrified.”

”I’m a girl, how about a little sympathy? I was bitten by a dog when I was little; just hearing a dog bark makes me nervous to death.”

Long Yongjun chuckled from the side and said:

”I’m not afraid of dogs. I killed several dogs as a kid, Sister Chen Fei. If you’re scared, just hold onto me.”

Long Yongjun extended his arm.

Chen Fei gave him a disdainful glance.

”Alright, stop messing around. Qin Yu and Deng Xiao’s feathered arrows lack lethality. Unfortunately, my range is only about 40 meters; let’s move forward a bit to find a spot for an ambush.”

”Boss, think carefully: if that dog bull charges, we can’t just fly away like Sister Qin Yu.”

Chen Fei looked at Yang Xiao pitifully.

Seeing her both pitiful and cute, Yang Xiao couldn’t resist pinching her cheek and said:

”Don’t worry, little sister, I’ll protect you. Get ready for some dog meat.”

Taken aback by Yang Xiao suddenly pinching her cheek, Chen Fei’s face flushed red, though inside she felt a swell of warmth.

As Yang Xiao moved forward, Long Yongjun, perhaps influenced by something, couldn’t help but mimic Yang Xiao’s gesture, reaching out to pinch Chen Fei’s cheek.

Then, he felt a chilling cold, an intense coldness penetrating his heart, shivering him. Upon closer look, his right hand was encased in ice, turned into an ice hand.

Long Yongjun: ”...”

”Think you can take advantage of me? Courting death, this time I used only half my power, next time I’ll cripple your wolf claw. No wonder people say perverts and wolves, they’re talking about people like you!”

Chen Fei remarked, turned and followed behind Yang Xiao, a hint of a mischievous smile on her face.

Long Yongjun shattered the ice on his hand, muttering:

”Why can the boss do it and I can’t. I was just showing good intentions to protect you.”

At this moment, on the other side of the valley, a group of people were rushing over, following the sound of barking.

”Boss, listen to that barking, it should be just ahead.”

”The dog is injured by us, shouldn’t have much fight left, everyone keep up. Try to kill it quickly; this mutated dog at least has a wolf skin hard armor with +4 defense. If we’re lucky, it might even drop a wolf skin gold armor. Xia Luo’s wolf skin gold armor came from a mutated dog, with +5 defense.”
