Super Gene Hunting Ground

Chapter 90: Chapter 90 Night

”Boss!”

Qin Yu and Deng Xiao saw Yang Xiao and stood up to greet him.

”How’s your injury?”

”Thanks for asking. I just took a Small Blood Pill and I’m feeling much better.”

Yang Xiao nodded and said:

”Get some rest and recover your strength as quickly as possible. Today’s delay by that mutant dog has cost us, and it’s already late. If we try to head back now, it might be a bit difficult.”

With darkness falling and the thick fog surrounding the mountains, even Qin Yu and Deng Xiao couldn’t find their way, let alone Yang Xiao and the others walking on the ground.

”What should we do then?”

The four of them gazed at Yang Xiao.

Yang Xiao thought for a moment and said:

”Deng Xiao, fly up immediately and push back the surrounding fog. Clear as much as you can, at least enough so that we can see the surrounding terrain.”

”Alright.”

Deng Xiao instantly transformed into a bird and flew into the air, continuously dispersing the surrounding fog. In a short while, the fog within one to two hundred meters had been cleared.

At that moment, a young man known as Qing Ge, leading Hei Zi and others, came over carrying the mutant dog.

With Deng Xiao dispersing the surrounding fog, everyone could see each other.

The mutant dog’s four legs were bound, and it kept howling.

Upon seeing Hei Zi and the others approaching, Yang Xiao immediately heightened his vigilance.

The young man walked up to Yang Xiao and said:

”My name is Kong Tianqing, vice president of the Xianan University student council. It’s getting late, and you probably can’t go back. How about we keep each other company and spend the night in the valley?”

Yang Xiao nodded and said:

”How do we keep company?”

”Simple. If there are no mutant monster attacks at night, everyone stays safe. If a monster attacks, we team up to repel it. How about it? We have seven people, you have five. In the end, you stand to gain.”

Yang Xiao chuckled:

”Okay, but I have one condition.”

”Speak.”

”You rest in your circle, and I’ll rest in ours, maintaining a distance of 30 meters, so we don’t disturb each other.”

Kong Tianqing glanced at Qin Yu, who was resting nearby, and smiled:

”That girl is beautiful, but she doesn’t catch my eye. Don’t worry.”

After saying this, he turned to Hei Zi and others, giving them a few instructions. Hei Zi stayed behind to guard the mutant dog, while the others went into the nearby woods to cut trees.

Yang Xiao instructed Chen Fei to take care of Qin Yu and took Long Yongjun into the nearby woods to cut trees.

”Boss, what are we cutting trees for?”

”Are you really clueless, or just pretending? When spending the night in the wild, we need a campfire for light, and it can also ward off some mutated creatures that fear fire. Cut plenty.”

After Deng Xiao cleared the fog within a 200 to 300-meter range, he flew back to the original location and joined the tree-cutting convoy.

Kong Tianqing kept his promise, choosing a relatively flat area about 30 meters from Yang Xiao’s group and stacked up a pile of firewood.

Hei Zi and the others lit the bonfire, took out some food to roast, eating and chatting merrily.

Meanwhile, Yang Xiao and his group continued cutting trees.

”Boss, is this enough? How much more do we need to cut? We’ve cut way more trees than they have.”

Yang Xiao and the others chopped down over a dozen bowl-thick trees, cutting the branches and trunks, then had Qin Yu and Chen Fei stack the logs into three square-shaped large bonfires, with each fire roughly ten meters apart.

Aside from this, they also piled a campfire in the middle of the square bonfires.

”Boss, is this really necessary for just one night?”

Chen Fei asked.

”It’s better to be prepared. I do not want to die here. At night, stay alert. Qin Yu and Deng Xiao, remember that if an emergency arises and survival becomes impossible, fly away quickly.”

”Yang Xiao, don’t say such ominous things.”

Qin Yu looked at Yang Xiao.

Yang Xiao smiled and said:

”Everyone, don’t be so tense. I’m just planning for contingencies. We’re not going to be that unlucky. Alright, everyone is tired. Light the central bonfire, eat something, and get some rest early.”

Chen Fei took out a prepared lighter and lit the bonfire, saying:

”I miss Chen Lu now. If she were here, one fireball would light the bonfire, no lighter needed.”

Everyone took out roasted buns and meat, heating them over the bonfire, eating while chatting.

It was completely dark, and the two bonfires in the valley illuminated each other, separated by about 30 meters, and they could only see silhouettes in the firelight.

Hei Zi approached Kong Tianqing and said:

”Boss, where are they from? Should we ask?”

”No need to ask. We’re closest to Kongming Academy here, and they seem to be from there.”

”Those two girls are quite pretty, heh heh.”

”Hei Zi, don’t get any ideas. If we were somewhere else, I might let you, but tonight, we’re in a wilderness valley, a few mountain peaks away from Xianan University. If anything unexpected happens, we’ll all die.

Moreover, their team of five, especially the leader, has good skills. You might not be his match. Plus, if a mutant monster attacks, their five members would be a valuable asset for us.

You better keep an eye on this mutant dog. Once it evolves to the Enhanced Gene Stage, we’ll kill it immediately, and I’ll take the Wolf Skin Gold Armor from the equipment it drops. The rest you can have.”

Hei Zi and several young men cast evil glances at Yang Xiao and his group, and upon seeing Qin Yu and Deng Xiao’s vague figures in the firelight, they swallowed reluctantly.

Yang Xiao ate some food, feeling tired, and said:

”Long Yongjun and Deng Xiao, watch the first half of the night. Chen Fei, Qin Yu, and I will rest now and take the second half of the night.”

Yang Xiao found a couple of tree trunks to lie on, near the bonfire, and slept.

Qin Yu and Chen Fei sat on a log, leaning back-to-back, with their eyes closed resting.

Nighttime in Biyun Mountain was when various wild animals became active, and various calls from birds, beasts, and insects echoed from the distant woods.

It was Deng Xiao’s first overnight stay in the wild, and feeling a bit anxious, he watched Yang Xiao and the others sleep before turning his gaze to Long Yongjun. Long Yongjun gave a simple smile and said:

”Sister Deng Xiao, don’t worry, I’ve got your back. My hometown is in the mountains, and nights in the mountains are always like this. Just ignore those sounds.”

Deng Xiao gave a slight nod and suddenly asked:

”Do mountains in your hometown have spiders as big as a washbasin?”

Not asking was fine, but as soon as Deng Xiao asked, Long Yongjun’s face changed, twitching several times, and said with fear:

”No, no way.”

After saying this, he glanced around in the dark and then said to Deng Xiao:

”Sister Deng Xiao, you watch my back, and I’ll watch yours. Let’s keep an eye out for each other.”

Deng Xiao froze, then burst into laughter, saying:

”Why are you more scared than I am? Didn’t you just say you are used to mountainous areas?”

Long Yongjun scratched his head, gave an awkward smile, and quickly added some branches to the bonfire to make it burn brighter.

A few palm-sized insects flew towards the firelight, and Long Yongjun swiftly swung his knife, slashing and killing them all.

Deng Xiao and Long Yongjun held their swords, occasionally dealing with insects that flew by. After more than an hour, the ground by the bonfire was filled with the corpses of various insects, and since some were quite meaty, Long Yongjun threw them into the bonfire for roasting, turning them into midnight snacks.

Over on Kong Tianqing’s side, it was a similar situation, with insects constantly flying over. They had three people watch the first half of the night, continually swinging their weapons to kill the mutant insects, killing dozens in no time.

Kong Tianqing, Hei Zi, and the others lay on logs and slept.

The huge mutant dog, bound with iron chains and unable to move, lay about 3 meters from the bonfire, whimpering softly.

A carapace beetle split in half landed near the mutant dog’s mouth, and it quickly licked it up with its tongue, chewing a few times before swallowing.

Soon, the mutant dog had eaten a dozen or so fallen insects.
