Demon King: Hero, don’t run away!

Chapter 677: Chapter 677 You Should Spread Your Liver and Brain on the Ground for the Empire

“Retreat like this!?”

Wanluo couldn’t believe that Ajiket had actually issued such an order.

He had yet to do anything, and just as he was about to make his move, Ajiket had issued the order to retreat.

Many officers of the third echelon shared Wanluo’s sentiment, especially the generals who had participated in the previous battle of Benliang City.

Having gained an advantage so quickly, with the soldiers’ morale at its peak, retreating now would make it incredibly difficult to seize such an opportunity again.

That’s what they thought, but each general still obeyed Ajiket’s commands, organizing their troops to retreat.

Without crucial logistical support, what would an immediate victory matter?

What Wansheng Country sought was a victory that thoroughly reclaimed all lost territory and forced the Luo Ze Empire to cease hostilities and apologize.

Obsessing over one battle’s victory, to the point of jeopardizing their long-fought-for goal, was something they absolutely would not allow to happen.

There were those who questioned Ajiket’s decision.

Attacks on the logistical troops could be managed by leaving a portion of the soldiers to continue the siege, with only a part redeployed to defend; there was no need to give up the victory at hand without a fight.

It wasn’t until the nearby artillery fire intensified that these individuals realized the superficiality of their thoughts.

With the third echelon retreating, the first and second echelons instantly became the main target for the city wall’s cannons and mages. The dreadful booms resonated beside them, a multitude of dazzling spells streaked before their eyes, and the scent of death pervaded the battlefield.

As Benliang City’s Luoze defenders pulled back, the advance of the beastman soldiers became even more arduous.

What drove the beastman soldiers to despair was that after Wulan’s troops withdrew into the city, they quickly headed for the walls and formed an orderly defense.

Even if the first and second echelons could approach the wall and attempt to scale it, they were destined to be entirely slaughtered by the amassed human forces above.

Even a successful conquest of Benliang City would entail losses that the Wansheng Country Army couldn’t accept.

Braving fierce artillery fire, the first and second echelons finally withdrew from the battlefield with two thousand casualties, heading straight for the camp.

At that moment, General Wu Zi, guarding the camp, was desperately holding on, his forehead scarred with fresh wounds.

Before him stood a pair of twins, each using a different style of swordsmanship, interweaving and coordinating, leaving General Wu Zi dazzled.

Fortunately, General Wu Zi managed to erect his rabbit ears to catch Eleven and Twelve’s movements, allowing him to use his disproportionately large Long Spear to block the twins’ joint assault.

Glancing at his surroundings with the corner of his eye, he saw the tents that the beastmen had labored to build were now ablaze, their cries of battle unceasing.

To minimize losses, even the beastman soldiers tasked with menial jobs took up arms and fought back, but how could they be a match for the Luo Ze Elites?

A dozen beastman soldiers swarmed one Luo Ze Elite, that man drew his Dual Blades, and like slicing through vegetables, he slaughtered one beastman after another.

Countless bloodstains turned the camp’s snowy ground crimson, the perpetrator indifferently sheathing his Dual Swords, stepping over the blood, found the tent storing the Storage Scrolls, took a torch from a nearby burning tent, tossed it into the Storage Scrolls, and then casually walked out.

As long as one didn’t trigger the array on those Storage Scrolls within a certain timeframe, the items within the Storage Magic Array would completely vanish into the Other Dimension.

Not even a scrap of food would remain; the Wansheng Country Army couldn’t even resort to eating charred food to survive.

Kui Yi, who had set aflame the tents, wasn’t in a hurry to leave.

A flurry of urgent footsteps sounded, as numerous beastman officers rushed over, some attacking Kui Yi without a word, while others darted into the flame-engulfed tents to trigger the arrays, attempting to salvage whatever they could.

A streak of light flashed by, and several officers attacking Kui Yi were splattered with blood, falling into the pools that had formed around them.

A girl with a mask and long black hair appeared, she casually swung her long blade, beastmen’s fresh blood turned into droplets falling from the edge of the sword, the blade reflecting the surrounding flames like a mirror.

To withstand the severe cold, the elites of the Luo Ze Empire all wore purple warm clothing, yet she was clad in black.

“Boring, just boring. If simply killing a few people could make me stronger, I wouldn’t be here!”

Sheathing her long blade, the girl’s words were filled with discontent,

“I joined you to become stronger, not to engage in such boring activities with you!”

Standing in front of the tent, Kui Yi curled his lip, equally dissatisfied with the girl’s attitude,

“Aslit Doreen, I know you’re powerful, even the strongest among us in the same period.

But don’t forget the grace the Empire has given you, it’s under the Empire’s nurturing that you’ve reached this height, able to barely make it onto the Genius List. Show some gratitude to the Empire.

Compared to your truly gifted sister, you still don’t measure up!”

At these words, the girl named Aslit, her expression twisted beneath her mask, walked up to Kui Yi, grabbed his collar, and hoisted him up.

Kui Yi’s face showed no sign of fear,

“What? Am I wrong?

Your family never valued you, it was after you agreed to become a dog eternally loyal to the Empire that the Empire was willing to invest resources in training you!

You should be devoted to the Empire to the point of sacrificing life and limb, rather than being an ungrateful wretch.”

Aslit couldn’t help frowning, unable to deny this point; had it not been for taking that step, she might have ended up completely different.

… Merely a laughingstock when mentioned by others.

With a “snap”, Kui Yi swatted Aslit’s hand away, straightened his collar,

“I’ve heard that to secure the Snowman’s help, the Empire has offered an invitation to the Dragon God Conference.

If you don’t want the invitation destined for you to go to waste, just dutifully do your assigned tasks without further complaints.

Without the invitation, wanting to stand out in the offline selections and advance to the main event, with your straightforward combat style, you might just get eliminated by some sly fox from who knows where.

If you want to prove you’re stronger than your sister, you need to achieve something significant for the Empire first!”

Aslit clenched her fists, grinding her teeth.

Under the glow of the flames, another Beastman Army charged at them.

Aslit drew her long blade like venting her emotions, swiftly slaying the oncoming beastman soldiers with each raise and fall of her hand.

Kui Yi smirked dismissively, drawing his Dual Swords and continued to search for the next tent.

But it wasn’t long before Kui Yi received a unified telepathic message from nearby mages,

“The main force of the Wansheng Country Army is starting to reinforce… Looks like a full retreat.

Hold on, a message from General Skaler, we can withdraw, carry out the next task.

Repeat, no need to engage, retreat directly.”
