Demon King: Hero, don’t run away!

Chapter 668: Chapter 668 What Did I Just Say?

A rounded object, its core slowly split in two, and a double helix staircase was slowly divided into two, rapidly filled by shimmering objects.

In no time, it had formed two identical double helix staircases.

The rounded object had also become two, each perfectly plump.

With his forehead freed from the dial, the researcher recorded the situation in the register while the sensation had not yet faded.

A man with a hunched back, a full face of stubble, and wearing slippers, scanned through the record sheets with his tired, dark-circled eyes, emitting a voice as deep as a dying man,

“Status of item A-1542 is not bad, S-457 is okay as well…”

After checking all the sheets, the hunched man walked deeper.

Before descending the next set of stairs, he glanced at a capsule device stacked in a corner, its dial no longer emitting light, having stopped for a long time.

This research institute still lacked the technology to repair these devices.

The devices unearthed from the ruins, once one was damaged, there was one less.

Memories from the past surfaced in the hunched man’s mind; when he was the director of this institute, he had used that device to cultivate a mixed-species demon.

At that time, to actively prepare for the war with Wansheng Country, they attempted to mix several types of large ape demons to create giant ape warriors resembling the Snowman Clan, but ended up with just a strangely looking small monkey.

Although it looked odd, it was very smart.

It could even read and write like a human.

However, the superiors clearly were unsatisfied with this outcome, their faces full of “Is this it? Just this?”

As a result, the ape warrior project was shelved.

The little monkey, too human-like in behavior, drew the ire of some important figures, who demanded it be disposed of…

Understanding the technology of the capsule was immensely difficult.

Compared to other Ruins Research Institutes, the research here was somewhat lackluster, not to mention the unstable returns and long cycles.

Shifting his gaze from the device, the hunched man walked deeper into the research institute.

The pale lights failed to illuminate the depths of the corridor, and as he walked, in front of the hunched man appeared a pretty woman in a white lab coat, her long eyelashes slightly curled up, her red lips sultry and attractive, her figure extremely imposing.

If she were not in this desolate research institute but elsewhere, she would undoubtedly attract countless suitors.

Her beauty also made the aging hunched man watch her intently, and after who knows how long, he noticed the woman smile slightly, reflexively looking in the direction she had been gazing.

On one side of the corridor, thick glass was installed through which one could see a bloodstained arena.

At the edge of the arena were piles of bodies of a wolf-like demon species with shells, a saber-toothed tiger with porcupine-like spurs slowly approaching a cornered wolf-like demon.

The wolf-like demon, similar in size to the saber-toothed tiger and with sharp claws, had its eyes gouged out by the tiger’s back spurs, and could only crazily stick out its snake-like tongue to discern the enemy’s location.

But does knowing the location allow a struggle?

The next moment, the saber-toothed tiger pounced forward, using its massive canines to end the life of the giant wolf, emitting a victorious roar.

“Deputy Director, what is your view on this combat trial?” Suddenly, the woman asked.

“To think it could handle so many Steel Dragon Wolves at once, perhaps we’ve created another remarkable monster.”

The hunched man shifted his gaze from the arena, turned to look at the woman whose smile had deepened, clearly very satisfied with the results.

“Just… Director Gorwey, using so many Steel Dragon Wolves this time, I’m afraid it will be difficult to conduct combat experiments in the future.”

Gorwey looked somewhat disappointed, “Deputy Director Song Wu, haven’t you found a substitute yet?”

Shaking his head, Song Wu sighed,

“It’s not that easy!

That guy had some connections with me in the past, which is why I gave them part of the technology. They actually managed to build those devices on their own and created these Mixed Species Demons, becoming our stable source of supply…

His family even figured out how to make those potions from my past ideas…

Unfortunately, just as the supply started to become stable, that incident occurred.

The Terun Republic opposed our war with Wansheng Country; although they did not state it openly, it was clear through legal terms, export goods, and the general attitude of the public.

In the end, not only did various research materials disappear, but the foundation we had built up over many years was also destroyed overnight…”

“It’s really hard to find someone talented and trustworthy,” Gorwey said as she looked at her reflection in the glass, slipping her hands into the pockets of her lab coat. “After them, how did it turn out, can they really no longer produce Steel Dragon Wolves?”

“They are now in Serti, even if they really could make them, it would probably take a considerable amount of preparation time; transporting goods from Serti here is somewhat difficult. We might as well overcome the technical difficulties and set up a production line here just like theirs.”

Song Wu’s voice suddenly became excited, but Gorwey immediately poured cold water on him.

“The initial decision to outsource the production of the test subjects was because building equipment was too expensive, and we do not have enough manpower here.

After all, our research is recognized as the slowest in all the Ruins Research Institutes, and also quite useless.

The Weapon Research Institute can produce cannons, the Technology Research Institute can produce communication devices, and the Culture Research Institute can also come up with quirky little gadgets.

Only us…”

Gorwey pursed her lips unhappily,

“Just when we thought we could gain some status with those Steel Dragon Wolves, incidents of Steel Dragon Wolves injuring people and causing poisoning occurred, and it all ended up going nowhere.

Our only contribution might just be those mounts for the generals…”

“That’s true.”

Song Wu also shook his head with a bitter smile, looking at the Saber-toothed Tiger in the arena that could find no worthy opponent and was letting out a low growl, wondering if such a powerful creature could be put to use in the future.

“Speaking of Steel Dragon Wolves, there might still be a way to get them…” Song Wu suddenly spoke up.

“What way?”

“The Silver Orchid Commerce seems to have sold the excess Steel Dragon Wolves to an organization called Blood something; the route is consistent with our transport, I guess this organization must be domestic, as long as we can find them…”

Before Song Wu could finish, Gorwey interrupted him,

“That organization doesn’t have any Steel Dragon Wolves left.”

Song Wu looked puzzled, “Why would the director…”

Before he could finish speaking, his mind went blank,

“What was I just talking about?”

Song Wu pondered for a moment and then recalled what he was about to say,

“It’s a pity they only sold Steel Dragon Wolves to us, still thinking they would expand the market… Alas, now it’s not possible to get Steel Dragon Wolves from anywhere else…”
