High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1922: Chapter 143: The Second Weekend of September

When the wheel of history rolls by, ordinary people rarely perceive it from the subtle changes of daily life. Because most people are like dust in the wheel tracks; the lucky ones might rise with the wheel’s turn and glance at the starry sky overhead; the unlucky ones cluster in the wheel tracks from beginning to end, their ears full of mundane trifles.

Zheng Qing felt that the ’little spat’ initiated by the Beta Town Post probably belonged to this category.

Since its brief outbreak on Friday night, all weekend, Saturday and Sunday, the sky was clear, the breeze mild, and the campus was lively and harmonious, showing a scene of peace and wellness.

So much so that when Zheng Qing walked along the shaded paths of the academy, he was momentarily dazed, suspecting he had fallen under a powerful confusion spell, unable to distinguish between illusion and reality—he would bet that many people at Jiuyou Academy already knew Old Yao was an actual demon, but nobody seemed to care.

No one worried that during Philosophy of Magic, the professor on the podium might bite their head off, nor did anyone concern themselves with whether a war might break out in Jiuyou Academy’s skies between Legendary Wizards.

Most were more focused on the monthly exams in some subjects during the first month this semester or the homework assigned by professors after class and the hunting party coming up next month.

Zheng Qing felt that even the stir caused by the cafeteria reducing a type of bun filling was bigger than the matter with Old Yao.

This hidden sense of contradiction tormented the young cost student until the Sunday meeting.

”Don’t you feel it’s a bit quiet in front of the teaching building today?” Zheng Qing, preoccupied with Old Yao’s matter, constantly felt something was amiss around him.

For the young cost student’s sensitivity, Doctor Xiao could always provide an appropriate explanation.

”Oh, that’s because the frogs in the pond in front of the teaching building have almost been caught,” Doctor Xiao, holding his black notebook, replied unhurriedly: ”Haven’t you noticed that since the Northern District Wizard started buying frogs, the yellow frogs across the school have decreased a lot? ... And even those not caught yet should be finding a mud hole to burrow into at this season.”

Zheng Qing was stunned, stopped in his tracks, and his fingers quickly counted a few times in his sleeves, feeling speechless—indeed, he was ’sensitive yet oblivious.’

A few familiar witches laughed and teased as they passed by Zheng Qing, noting the warlock’s scrutinizing gaze, they suddenly quieted, lining up like quails as they walked quietly into the teaching building.

Without reason, Zheng Qing speculated, feeling they were secretly whispering about Old Yao’s matter, annoyed at the thought; did they believe Old Yao’s students were also demons, ready to suddenly open their jaws and bite them?

With a moment’s distraction, Xiao Xiao’s figure had already disappeared at the corner of the first-floor hall, and the warlock hurried a few steps to catch up.

”Don’t you think other people’s looks at us are odd?” He caught up with Xiao Xiao, panting lightly, and whispered in the Doctor’s ear: ”Even if Old Yao is a demon, it has nothing to do with us...”

Doctor Xiao sighed deeply.

”I think your issue is bigger than Old Yao’s,” he grabbed the thick black notebook as if wanting to pat Zheng Qing’s forehead yet worried it wouldn’t reach, looking exhausted.

”My issue?” Zheng Qing was a bit confused.

”Yes, your issue,” Doctor Xiao quickened his pace slightly, his voice almost a whisper: ”Don’t you think the ineffectiveness of the Silence Contract is troublesome? If some Black Wizards find out about your fraud talent... I doubt you’ll be able to stay at school for long.”

Zheng Qing chuckled dryly, and finally dropped the topic.

Regarding the reason for the Silence Contract’s failure, it was indeed inexplicable. As for Black Wizards luring him for fraud, Zheng Qing found it more of a joke, entirely improbable.

The Sunday night class meeting took place in the Curse Course classroom, Teaching Building East 601. When Zheng Qing and Xiao Xiao entered the classroom, most of the class had already arrived.

However, unlike the usual noisy scene, today the classroom was exceptionally quiet. Every student who entered the room received a simultaneous gaze from over twenty pairs of eyes, making them feel uncomfortable.

”Another Old Yao’s brat has entered!” a stick figure behind the door greeted in a strange tone, pronouncing the ’Yao’ sound flatly, clearly implying something.

Zheng Qing tilted his head to glance at it.

The stick figure somehow scavenged an armor and sword, strutting proudly along the edge of the white drawing paper—so-called armor was merely a few rough lines forming a square, and the sword was simply two intersecting lines; Zheng Qing doubted whether its sword was even sharp.

Noticing the warlock’s gaze, the stick figure was instantly enraged.

”Raise your law book, Old Yao’s brat!” it waved the thin lines, making ’swoosh swoosh’ sounds while finding time to curse: ”With me supporting the First University’s backbone, the First University will never sink!”

Zheng Qing truly admired this little thing’s dual linguistics skills.

After greeting the stick figure amicably, the young man turned back to look at the front row of the classroom.

Li Meng seemed as if fleas were crawling on her, twisting left and right on her seat, and upon seeing the warlock’s figure, she eagerly waved hello, winking delightfully as if inviting him to chat.

Zheng Qing noticed Jiang Yu seemed to be helping the little witch check her homework, her face frosty, and he immediately abandoned the idea of greeting, sliding past quietly, wholly ignoring Li Meng’s gestures.

It was not that he didn’t want to help, but he couldn’t help, care for oneself, take care.

Bearing the little witch’s resentment, Zheng Qing happily reached the Atonement Hunting Team’s warlocks ’exclusive seating area,’ the corner by the window at the classroom’s left-back.

Xin Fat Man and Zhang Ji Xin were talking softly, looking secretive.

”Brother Xin came quite early today,” the young cost student greeted friendly: ”Didn’t your brother let you help organize materials in the office?”

Zhang Ji Xin did not respond, only gesturing for him and Xiao Xiao to come closer.

”What’s up?” Zheng Qing felt curious, leaning closer: ”What are you talking about?”

The Fat Wizard looked around vigilantly.

”Old Yao remains the dean of Jiuyou Academy,” he lowered his voice and spoke rapidly to his peers: ”This is the latest news from the editorial department, tomorrow the campus newspaper header will publish an article signed by Old Yao... it can’t be wrong.”

Zheng Qing didn’t react for a moment.

”Isn’t that a normal thing? Just a ’rumor,’ already defined,” he brushed it off carelessly: ”Could it remove a Legendary Wizard’s post based on mere hearsay?”

”No, no, you didn’t understand my point,” the Fat Wizard interrupted Zheng Qing, slightly emphasizing: ”My point is, Old Yao remains the dean of Jiuyou Academy... this implies the originally scheduled vice principal is not Old Yao!”
