Destined Entwining: Capturing My Devoted Beau

Chapter 423: Chapter 228: Anxious at the Threshold of Home (Third Update)

Lawrence Winters asked Kenneth Osborne for the address of that hospital, then turned to Nick Zeller and said nervously, ”Kenneth is injured and in the hospital, let’s go there quickly!”

As she spoke, she sent the hospital address Kenneth gave her to Nick Zeller.

Upon hearing that Kenneth Osborne was injured, Nick Zeller turned the car around without a second thought and headed towards the hospital, asking, ”...How did he get hurt? Early in the morning, was it a car accident?”

Lawrence Winters: ”...”

She rubbed her temples and said apologetically, ”I forgot to ask just now.”

Nick Zeller cast her a disdainful glance, ”I think you’re a lost cause; you’re already spellbound by him. What will you do in the future? Do you really want to spend your life with him?”

Lawrence Winters pursed her lips, holding onto her last bit of defiance: ”...Clearly, Kenneth pursued me first, how am I the one who’s spellbound? I remember what Uncle said, not to take initiative, not to reject, not to commit.”

Nick Zeller shuddered and quickly said, ”Alright, Uncle was wrong. From now on, don’t mention those ’three nons’ to anyone, understood?”

Lawrence Winters held back a laugh and said seriously, ”Uncle, that’s not how you admit a mistake. Just saying it has no meaning, you know?”

”I know, I know. Once we get out of the car, I’ll send you a big red envelope,” Nick Zeller laughed with her, ”But you have to promise me not to tell anyone about the ’three nons’!”

”Why?” Lawrence Winters didn’t actually see anything particularly wrong with the ’three nons’, except that it sounded a bit roguish.

”Because that’s what scumbags do!” Nick Zeller gave her a glare, ”I think you’re about to become a scumbag yourself! If your mother finds out, she’ll probably kick me out of the house, and I’ll end up living on the streets, telling fortunes to survive!”

”Uncle, you’re that afraid of my mom...” Lawrence Winters dragged her voice, ”The red envelope won’t cut it; to seal my lips, you need to be more sincere.”

”Alright, alright, when I get back, I’ll transfer ten thousand dollars to you, is that enough to seal your lips?”

”Not enough.” Lawrence Winters shook her head, extending two pale fingers, ”At least twenty thousand.”

”Twenty thousand it is, we’ve been without orders for months, living on our savings.” Nick Zeller grumbled his dissatisfaction.

Lawrence Winters ignored him, anxiously looking at the road ahead.

Nick Zeller seemed to understand her mood and sped up, reaching the hospital fifteen minutes faster than usual.

As soon as the car stopped, Lawrence Winters dashed out, leaving Nick Zeller panting as he tried to keep up.

When they reached the ward where Kenneth Osborne was, Lawrence Winters stopped, standing at the door, holding the door frame, with a hesitant yet eager expression, immensely pleasing Kenneth Osborne.

He lifted his hand to gesture her over, ”Nora, come here.”

Lawrence Winters felt a sour tingling in her nose and almost burst into tears.

She never imagined that Kenneth Osborne could get hurt.

In her memory, he was always the older brother who could help her with school and fight alongside her.

If there’s something she can’t handle, if she can’t turn to her uncle or mom, she would definitely go to Kenneth Osborne.

And Kenneth Osborne never once let her down.

But this time, he almost fell in a pool of blood, and she wasn’t by his side.

At that moment, did he feel very lonely and desperate?

Lawrence Winters slowly approached, taking Kenneth Osborne’s hand.

The nurse had already left, Kenneth Osborne’s pants leg had been cut open, revealing his shin wrapped in white gauze.

Lawrence Winters lowered her eyes, looking at his leg, crouched down so her eyes were level with the wound, reached out to gently touch it, and asked, ”Does it hurt? How did it happen?”

Kenneth Osborne leaned over to pat her head, smiling, ”It’s okay, I can bear it. When the police come to take my statement, you’ll find out what happened.”

He helped Lawrence Winters up, ”Come, help me wash my face in the bathroom.”

Lawrence Winters supported his arm, accompanying him into the bathroom, helping him clean the blood off his face and using tissue to dry it.

Kenneth Osborne adjusted his collar in the mirror, giving a slight smile, and said, ”When I go home later, will you go with me?”

”Of course.” Lawrence Winters leaned beside him, tugging his sleeve, saying, ”You scared me to death, from now on I’m putting a Talisman on you, no more situations like this.”

Kenneth Osborne also realized how peculiar today’s situation was.

That person was definitely not standing there by chance.

He was there on purpose, and his target was him alone.

And Kenneth Osborne didn’t know this person, so the attacker must have been doing someone else’s dirty work.

But recently he hadn’t offended anyone, had he?

Who would hire a hitman to kill him?

When the police arrived, Kenneth Osborne held Lawrence Winters’ hand, and went with her to provide their statements.

They stayed in the room where Kenneth Osborne had been, as no one else was in there for the time being.

Lawrence Winters sat by Kenneth Osborne’s side, listening as he began to speak.

”...I usually go in earlier in the morning, and I always take that elevator.”

”Today, as I entered the elevator, that person was already inside, wearing a black sequined raincoat-type jacket, with a high collar, a hat, and a mask over the face. I’m sure I don’t know him, and I’ve had no conflict with him.”

”After the elevator doors closed, he suddenly drew a knife and attacked me.”

”I acted in self-defense and fought back.”

”He couldn’t beat me, so I knocked him out. But he wore a knuckleduster with spikes on it and it scraped my leg.”

Kenneth Osborne didn’t mention, to avoid worrying Lawrence Winters, that the spikes had barbs and a single scrape would result in continuous bleeding.

He was weak because the bleeding wouldn’t stop.

But he didn’t say it, the police did, ”The suspect is a wanted criminal involved in thirteen different cases with five fatalities. If he had scraped your throat with that knuckleduster, it would have been over for you.”

Lawrence Winters’ heart tightened, looking again at Kenneth Osborne’s injured leg, puzzled, ”...Why did the suspect want to kill you? Did he ask for your money?”

”Generally, if it’s a robbery, they ask for money first.” A police officer explained to her, ”But this person, based on surveillance, didn’t say anything to Mr. Osborne and attacked immediately. We have reason to believe he was paid to target Mr. Osborne.”

”Can you find out who it was?” Lawrence Winters asked anxiously, ”We can’t let the person behind this get away with it!”

”We’ll try, but if this person refuses to talk, there’s not much we can do.”

Lawrence Winters frowned slightly, ”Do you need him to talk voluntarily? If you don’t mind, maybe I can help.”

Kenneth Osborne immediately squeezed her hand upon hearing this, gently scolding, ”That’s the police’s job, how can you interfere? You need to trust them, they’ll figure it out.”

...

At this time, the news of Kenneth Osborne’s attack also reached Francis Johnson.

He looked at the photo of the suspect sent over, frowning.

”What’s going on?” he asked his subordinate, ”Are there any unknown figures around Kenneth Osborne lately?”

”No,” his subordinate replied, puzzled, ”We haven’t been shadowing him 24/7, because that’s too obvious and would definitely be noticed.”

”Actually, there’s no need to shadow him 24/7.” Francis Johnson slammed the table, ”Maybe we’re thinking in the wrong direction.”

Just then, Christopher Mason also called him, ”Francis, withdraw all security personnel from around Kenneth Osborne, have no further contact. Find a way to sever ties with him.”

”Why?” Francis Johnson was confused, ”Did something happen to Kenneth Osborne?”

”He’s fine, it’s you. You’re getting too involved, and someone with ulterior motives is noticing,” Christopher Mason calmly said, ”Keep a distance from him, and he’ll be safe.”

”If you don’t want others to delve deeper into this, you know what to do.”

After Christopher Mason hung up, it took a while for Francis Johnson to call Kenneth Osborne.

”Kenneth, there’s something I have to tell you,” Francis Johnson sighed, ”Our SSA Private Equity is planning to invest in another company.”

Kenneth Osborne: ”...”

”Mr. Zhao, you’re an investment company, isn’t investing in other companies normal?”
