I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 493, A Demanding Task

Translator: Silavin

*Rustle, rustle, rustle…* The cold wind continuously blew through the leaves on the trees, and the golden yellow leaves fell to the ground with a rustling sound. At this moment, the ground looked as if it was covered with a golden carpet, quite thick in depth; stepping on it, one could clearly feel the sensation of sinking down.

The area near the Spotted Deer Tribe was the same, covered everywhere with golden leaves. As it was not a market day, there were not that many people at the entrance of the Tribe.

Only people from the Spotted Deer Tribe were there; they were repairing the wooden houses at the entrance and the wooden walls surrounding the Tribe.

Because the snow season was approaching, they also had to prepare for it. Every year at this time was a very difficult period to endure.

Even the rainy season was extremely arduous for them, let alone the freezing snow season that could kill from just the temperature alone.

Although they were a Large Tribe with plenty of food and Animal Hide, their living environment was not particularly good.

Compared to the Flame Dragon Tribe, they were worlds apart. After all, they all lived in wooden houses, and now they certainly needed to check the sturdiness of these wooden houses.

Otherwise, when the snow season arrived, the accumulated snow would collapse the wooden houses.

Moreover, they needed to check the arrangement of the wooden planks in the houses; otherwise, the cold wind would blow in and make it very cold.

The ground also needed to be checked. Since the rainy season, their land has become extremely muddy. Now, they needed to place some gravel or dry soil on those muddy paths. This way, the paths would become drier and harder, making walking much more comfortable.

Although the rainy season had passed some time ago and they had been continuously working on this task,

Due to the market issue, people had been coming and going in the Tribe, so those paths had never been completely repaired.

This was because the snow season was approaching, and they needed to make the land better; otherwise, when the snow fell on it, the snowmelt would make the land even worse.

After the snow season came the eternal night, and they would not have time to repair the land but would instead have to deal with those frenzied Ferocious Beasts.

“All of you must be careful; all the land needs to be covered with a layer of gravel, and no place can be overlooked.” Lu Lin solemnly said. The deer horned girl had specifically come out to supervise the work, as this was a major matter concerning the Tribe’s survival and couldn’t tolerate any carelessness.

“Yes, Miss Lu Lin.” The Tribe’s people responded in unison.

At this moment in the Spotted Deer Tribe, most people were either working on the land or checking the sturdiness of the wooden houses.

It could be said that no one was idle now; everyone was busy with their tasks.

Shaman Lu Shan walked out of his wooden house after a long absence and observed the busy scene in the Tribe.

He nodded thoughtfully and muttered to himself, “I hope we can safely pass through the snow season this time.”

Shaman Lu Shan thought carefully and then smiled, shaking his head, his expression appearing quite strange.

He took a deep breath and said, “Oh, right, not just the snow season, we also need to safely pass through the eternal night.”

The eternal night could be said to be every Tribe’s nightmare because not everyone could resist those frenzied Ferocious Beasts.

Although they had many Totem Warriors, the unfortunate thing was that they did not have powerful weapons. Even with their numerical advantage, without strong weapons, it would be a truly difficult fight as they could only face those frenzied Ferocious Beasts with their bare hands.

Not everyone could defeat Ferocious Beasts with their bare hands. After all, during the eternal night, the frenzied Ferocious Beasts were extremely strong.

Originally, Ferocious Beasts comparable to Early-Stage Totem Warriors would, during the eternal night, all break through to become comparable to Mid-Stage Totem Warriors. Similarly, Ferocious Beasts comparable to Mid-Stage Totem Warrior would now be comparable to High Grade Totem Warriors.

This was a very thorny issue. Although it would most likely not be hordes of Ferocious Beasts charging at once, having one or two attacks a day was already exhausting.

Every time during this period, the Tribe suffered the most casualties, more than during the snow season or rainy season.

“Father, why have you come out?” Lu Lin immediately ran over.

“I felt a bit stuffy staying in the room, so I came out to look around.” Shaman Lu Shan said in a deep voice.

Mainly because he heard the noisy sounds from the Tribe, he wanted to come out and see what it was like during this annual time.

After all, every year during the eternal night, he had to save many Totem Warriors, and seeing those Warriors lying in pools of blood was also a distressing matter.

If it were only a few, it would not be much of an issue, but the deaths often occurred in batches.

No Tribe leader would want to see this, especially not the Tribe’s Shaman.

It should be known that cultivating a Totem Warrior was not an easy task, and every year during this period, a large number of Totem Warriors would die, which was truly regrettable.

“They are all preparing for the arrival of the snow season.” Lu Lin immediately said, knowing her Father preferred quiet, and the current noise would certainly disturb him.

“I see. How are the preparations going?” Shaman Lu Shan asked.

“The Animal Hide that needed to be distributed has been distributed, and people have been notified to collect food when the time comes. Now they are checking the sturdiness of the wooden houses, and after the inspection, there should not be any major problems.” Lu Lin reported.

“Are the preparations for the eternal night ready?” Shaman Lu Shan asked, as this was what concerned him the most.

As for the snow season, they had safely passed through it every year, with very few casualties, so he was not worried about that.

“The Chieftain is discussing with the Tribe’s Totem Warriors about the eternal night, but there’s no conclusion yet,” Lu Lin shook her head.

Every year at this time was the busiest period for the Chieftain because, besides dealing with the eternal night, he also had to arrange personnel for the rotation duty.

This was undoubtedly the most demanding task because in previous years, the Totem Warriors on rotation duty had all died untimely deaths. Therefore, many Warriors would try to resist getting assigned this task, so the Chieftain had to make the tough call and might even have to force them to accept the assignment.

“Indeed, this will be hard for him. Tell him to inform me after he has arranged it.” Shaman Lu Shan said in a deep voice.

He did not have any solution either; after all, someone had to do this job, otherwise how would the Tribe’s safety be ensured?

“Yes,” Lu Lin nodded.

“You can give him a suggestion: let those unmarried Totem Warriors go. Although this isn’t fair to them, what else can we do?” Shaman Lu Shan helplessly said.

After all, they had not established Families yet, so they did not have the concerns of their Children. But precisely because of this, they would not be able to experience having a Family after they passed away.

“I understand,” Lu Lin nodded.
