I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 489, The Shaman Also Cannot Understand What We Are Saying

Translator: Silavin

“Shaman, you just mentioned a plaque. What is a plaque?” Yan Hua had only heard this unfamiliar term.

“A plaque is something that hangs above the main entrance, telling everyone what the building is called,” Su Bai explained simply.

In fact, in ancient buildings of Earth’s China, plaques were often hung after construction was completed, adding a finishing touch to the building. This was because people at that time believed that just as a person has a name at birth, a building should also have a name as its identifier.

Naturally, plaques gradually continued to be used until today, and having a plaque also makes buildings appear more aesthetically pleasing.

“Oh, I understand now. Does that mean we should also hang a Flame Dragon Tribe plaque at the entrance to our Tribe?” Yan Hua immediately thought of this point.

“Hahaha… we’ll discuss that later. We’ll definitely hang one, but not at this moment,” Su Bai laughed heartily.

He had not expected Yan Hua would immediately think of this, but they would indeed hang one later.

However, all of this would have to wait until that row of wooden walls was taken down and city walls were built.

“Shaman, if you write it out, I can ask Uncle Gu Mu to make this plaque right away,” Yan Hua was already somewhat impatient. She was eager to see what it would look like with a plaque hanging at the entrance of this building. It would certainly look quite nice.

“There’s no rush. Take a rest first,” Su Bai smiled.

“By the way, Shaman, when we returned just now, we saw that the second Hunting Team had returned, and the first Hunting Team was preparing to set off tomorrow.” Sha Lan said.

After Sha Lan and others had finished training, they had seen the hot air balloon flying towards the Tribe from a distance, clearly coming from the direction of the Hunting Ground.

“Hmm, but this isn’t very good,” Su Bai suddenly pursed his lips and said.

“Shaman, what’s wrong? Did something happen?” Sha Lan asked with concern.

“The flow of information is too slow this way. Just like when Qing Yan and his group returned, we had no idea how many people they were bringing back until they had arrived.”

Su Bai frowned and continued. “It’s just like when we returned from the ocean a few days ago.”

“Shaman, there’s nothing we can do about this. The distance is too great, and we simply have no way to communicate,” Sha Lan said helplessly.

Although Sha Lan had always been aware of this issue, it was indeed a problem that existed and could not be solved.

Since the Tribe’s establishment, this had been the most fatal communication problem, though it had persisted until now.

“No, this severely impacts our Tribe’s development. If information had flowed more smoothly when we attacked the Black Snake Tribe last time, we could have taken them down much earlier,” Su Bai said in a deep voice.

He had always felt this was a problem, but at the time he had only focused on the most pressing matters and had not considered this aspect.

“Shaman, what should we do? Use hot air balloons to transmit information?” Sha Lan asked.

“No, that’s too conspicuous and could easily be discovered by other Tribes. Besides, hot air balloons aren’t very fast.” Su Bai shook his head.

He did not think hot air balloons were a good solution. Information transmission must be inconspicuous and fast.

“If even hot air balloons won’t work, then there really is no solution,” Sha Lan said with a worried expression.

“No, there is another way, and that is using carrier pigeons. Using this method would not only be faster but also would not be noticed by others.” Su Bai suddenly thought of a brilliant solution.

“Carrier pigeons? Shaman, what are carrier pigeons?” Sha Lan knew nothing about this term.

“It means using birds to deliver messages for us.” Su Bai explained simply.

“Shaman, but we can’t understand what birds say, and those birds also can’t understand what we say. How can they help us deliver messages?” Sha Lan wondered if she had misheard.

How could one think of using birds to deliver messages? This seemed impossible to achieve unless birds could understand Human language.

“They don’t need to understand what we say; they just need to help us deliver the written message,” Su Bai said softly.

On Earth, pigeon post was a common method of transmitting information, especially in ancient times when communications were not advanced and there were no modern smartphones.

So, people back then thought of using birds to deliver messages, which was much faster than sending messages by horses. This was because birds naturally know the way home, like how they would return to their nests.

The ancient method of pigeon post worked like this: if two people were friends living in the same place, and later one person had to go elsewhere, he would take pigeons from his hometown when he leaves.

One day when he needed to contact the one that remained, he would put a note in a special container attached to the pigeon’s foot and release the pigeon.

The pigeon would fly back to its hometown, and the person that remained would find that pigeon along with the message. Geese work the same way—they all utilize the natural habits of birds.

Of course, this premise is based on raising these birds for a long time, providing them with an adequate living environment and food every day.

This way, after they leave this place, they would want to return. If food is insufficient or the living environment was poor, they would not want to come back once they leave.

“So, a message means tying what we write onto a bird and letting those birds help us fly to specific people?” Sha Lan was quite clever.

“Yes, you’re right. As long as those birds fly to those specific people, then those people can take the message from the bird and know what I want to say.” Su Bai said.

“Shaman, this is simply impossible to achieve. Those birds won’t know where to fly.” Sha Lan still felt this plan was impractical.

“Don’t worry, just do as I say, and you’ll understand later,” Su Bai did not want to explain too much; showing them the results would be better than explaining at length.

“Yes, Shaman. In that case, what would you like us to do?” Sha Lan immediately stood up straight and asked.

“Help me catch a few birds, but they must be gentle ones that leave here every year and then return at a specific time,” Su Bai said.

“Leave here every year and then return?” Sha Lan did not quite understand why.

“For example, the snow season is coming soon, and those birds will certainly fly to other places. Just catch the migratory birds.” Su Bai said simply.

“Oh! I understand now. There are two types of birds that do this: one is the grey sparrow, and the other is the great dove,” Sha Lan immediately said.

“That’s it, let’s catch these two types.” Su Bai smiled.

“I understand.” Sha Lan responded gently.
