I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 482, The First Teacher

“Green plants grow up high, pink flowers bloom under the sun, white clouds float in the sky…” Lu Zi sang passionately with her purple eyes closed, her expression showing pure enjoyment, finally finding a moment to relax. Her current state was the most relaxed she had been in days; otherwise, she had constantly felt on edge and uncomfortable.

*Clap, clap, clap…* Su Bai reached out and applauded, praising her with satisfaction. “Wonderful, that was beautiful. I had no idea your voice was so lovely.”

This was the first time since his transmigration that he had heard such beautiful singing, which could truly be considered heavenly. Back on Earth, a voice like this could have launched a career; it was certainly no worse than those of professional singers.

“Really? Shaman, is my singing really that beautiful?” Lu Zi blinked her purple eyes in delight.

Although people in her Tribe had praised her singing before, they were merely ordinary people of the Tribe. Being complimented by someone like the Shaman was a first for her, making it especially exciting.

“It’s beautiful, a rare voice indeed,” Su Bai nodded, appearing as though he had not heard enough.

“Shaman, but I can only sing. I can’t help the Tribe in any meaningful way,” Lu Zi frowned.

She could not imagine how her singing could possibly benefit the Tribe. Would she have to sing for people every day? That would be too tedious. Besides, everyone was so busy each day that they would not have time to listen to her sing anyway.

“No, your singing can help the Tribe in many ways.” Su Bai smiled.

He already had new plans in mind. In this Primitive Era, being able to sing and dance was quite rare. Though everyone could dance, those dances were only for hunting or preparing for the Totem Awakening Ceremony. Those dances had no aesthetic appeal whatsoever and were certainly not for appreciation, completely different from elegant dances.

“Shaman, what would my work be then?” Lu Zi asked curiously.

“You could teach the Tribe’s children to sing, and if you’re willing, I can build a stage for you to perform.” Su Bai smiled.

He planned to start education with the young, as knowing how to sing was not a bad thing.

The students were already struggling with learning characters every day; if they could have a music lesson to refresh themselves and help them learn better, that would certainly be beneficial. This way, they would look forward to school rather than sighing with frustration every day.

“You want me to teach children how to sing?” Lu Zi doubted her own ears.

“What’s wrong? Are you unwilling?” Su Bai raised an eyebrow.

“No, no, no, I’m very willing, but can the Tribe’s children learn how to sing?” Lu Zi asked puzzledly.

“In your Tribe, were children not allowed to learn singing?” Su Bai inquired.

“Yes, in our Tribe, there was no concept of children learning to sing, not even adults. Only those of higher status could learn how to read and write.” Lu Zi explained.

“We have no such distinctions here. There’s no higher or lower status; all children can learn to read and also learn to sing.” Su Bai stated with a thought. [As I thought, it is the same wherever we go in this era. All Tribes have strict hierarchies.]

Those of lower status certainly had no opportunity to learn writing, let alone singing. He wanted to abolish this distinction, allowing everyone to learn singing and reading regardless of status.

“All the children in the Shaman’s Tribe are learning to read and write? That’s amazing,” Lu Zi marvelled.

“Of course, all children and adults in our Tribe can learn to read and write, and if you’re willing, you can too.” Su Bai nodded.

Lu Zi blinked her purple eyes and said, “I learned how to read and write in my Tribe, though perhaps the characters are different from those here. But I’ll diligently learn the new characters.”

She thought that her previous learning was in the past; now that she had come to a new Tribe, she would certainly need to learn new characters from them.

“That’s good. For now, you can learn with Ah’Lan and the others. They’ve learned quite a few characters recently. You can start by learning from them, and once you’ve mastered those, I’ll teach you all together.” Su Bai said gently.

“Yes, I’ll start learning tonight.” Lu Zi nodded with a smile, then asked awkwardly, “Shaman, is it true that you’ll let me perform in the Tribe?”

Lu Zi had never heard such a thing before—someone willing to build a stage specifically for her to perform.

In her previous Tribe, she would simply hum to herself when she wanted to sing, or perhaps sing a little with friends.

“Of course, if you’re willing, I’ll build a stage for you,” Su Bai nodded.

Currently, the Flame Dragon Tribe had no entertainment, and if Lu Zi was willing to sing within the Tribe, that would certainly add to the liveliness here. This way, after a busy day, everyone could have a relaxing performance to watch, rather than just returning to their wooden houses to sleep once they finished work.

“Good, I’ll work hard.” Lu Zi promptly agreed.

“And are you willing to teach the children in the Tribe to sing?” Su Bai continued asking.

Lu Zi nodded without hesitation and responded, “I’m willing, I’m willing, as long as I can work for meat to eat, I’m definitely willing.”

She immediately felt much less guilty, as she had felt that everyone in the Tribe had a job and could exchange their work for meat, while she alone could do nothing but still eat.

“Good, then prepare yourself, and tomorrow you’ll go to the school with me,” Su Bai smiled lightly.

Recently, the characters he had been teaching the Tribe’s children had gradually become more structured.

Previously, he had only taught numbers, or simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of numbers, or very simple, very basic characters.

“Good, but what is a school?” Lu Zi asked, puzzled.

“A school is a place where children go to learn to read and write. It’s a fixed location, and you’ll be the first teacher there, other than me.” Su Bai smiled.

Although it was called a school, the only one actually teaching others how to read and write was Su Bai himself.

This school was specially built, constructed of stone and cement into a two-storey building. It was divided into many classrooms, although currently everyone was concentrated in one classroom. However, in the future, when the Tribe grew, there would naturally be more children.

“So that’s what it is, but what is a teacher?” Lu Zi asked.

“A teacher is a respectful title for someone who teaches others. It’s a very respected position,” Su Bai said gently.

Hearing this, Lu Zi inexplicably stood up straight and responded seriously, “Yes.”
