I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 460, It Seems Like I’m Not Suited For This

Su Bai, after preparing the leaves, first grabbed a handful of glutinous rice and placed it inside the leaves.

However, he did not grab much, just a little bit, just enough to fill the funnel-shaped bottom of the leaf.

“Shaman, this leaf is so big, why are you only putting a little bit of glutinous rice in it?” Yu Ying curiously asked. She had propped her face up with both hands, curiously watching this operation with great attentiveness. Since she would be practicing herself soon enough, she needed to pay close attention now.

Often, she could learn something just by watching once. Her skills in cooking were exceptional, most of the time not requiring repeated demonstrations.

“Because we need to fill the bottom first, so that we can place the filling on top,” Su Bai explained softly.

After his explanation, he continued, picking up a mushroom and placing it on top of the glutinous rice.

Then, he grabbed a bit more glutinous rice to cover the mushroom, and after that placed a piece of beast meat on top.

He repeated this process of adding glutinous rice, adding filling, adding glutinous rice, adding filling, until the funnel-shaped leaf was completely filled.

“You need to watch this step carefully. This is a bit more complicated.” Su Bai patiently said.

“Yes,” Yu Ying nodded heavily.

After Su Bai finished, he covered it with two leaves, then took a vine and began wrapping it around the Zongzi, until the Zongzi was completely tightly bound.

“And that’s it, a Zongzi is completed. Understand?” Su Bai asked.

Yu Ying had a conflicted expression, thought for a moment and said, “I think I know how to do it, let me try.”

“Good, give it a try then. If there’s anything you don’t understand, just ask me.” Su Bai did not continue making another one. He wanted to see how she would make it.

Yu Ying nodded and began skilfully taking two leaves and rolling them into a funnel shape. Following the first step, she began putting a little bit of glutinous rice inside, then added some mushrooms.

She performed many detailed steps, and finally began to cover it with leaves, reaching the binding stage.

But since it was her first time making Zongzi, the leaf had not even been properly covered, and holes appeared.

“Ah, why did it open up?” Yu Ying widened her pink eyes, discovering that the entire Zongzi had two large holes.

“Haha…” Su Bai laughed heartily and said, “That’s because you put too much glutinous rice in, and it burst through the leaves.”

He had noticed this while watching, and was about to say something when he saw her grab another handful of glutinous rice and put it in. At that point it was obviously too late.

He thought it would be better to let her make a mistake first, so she would know how to properly make Zongzi.

“So that’s it. It seems making zongzi isn’t that simple.” Yu Ying sighed. But she did not give up and took up two more leaves to start making Zongzi again.

*Step step step…*

A series of cheerful footsteps sounded as Yan Hua ran up from the first floor to the second floor with a smile.

“Shaman, Xiao Yu, what are you doing? Why are you suddenly playing with leaves?” Yan Hua curiously asked.

As soon as she came up, she saw Yu Ying holding two leaves rolled into a strange shape.

“We’re making Zongzi. Want to try?” Yu Ying said with a smile. She was happily playing with the glutinous rice grains stuck to her face, looking quite comical.

Yan Hua covered her mouth and laughed, saying, “You should wipe the stuff off your face first. But what is Zongzi?”

“Zongzi is…” Yu Ying enthusiastically explained.

*Creak!* Just as she was about to finish speaking, Co Co opened the laboratory door, having heard some talk about Zongzi from the room.

She came out wanting to try making Zongzi too. After all, she had stayed in the laboratory for too long. She needed to come out for some fresh air.

Co Co’s hair was now much shorter than before. It had been cut very short, just a bit longer than a boy’s, approximately ear-length.

This was at her request. She found it incredibly comfortable to have it this short. Washing her hair would be much more convenient in the future, and it would not interfere with her experiments. Overall, there were many benefits to having short hair.

“Want to join us?” Su Bai asked with a smile, making Zongzi was more fun with more people.

Co Co nodded without hesitation and replied, “I’d like to try too.”

After cutting her hair, her personality had also begun to change a bit, no longer the quiet and reserved person she was before. She was now more carefree.

“Shaman, I didn’t know Zongzi have so many steps to it!” Yan Hua said as she sat on the chair.

“Alright, stop talking and let’s start making Zongzi.” Yu Ying urged, already somewhat impatient to try making a second one.

“Okay.” The other two girls nodded and also gathered around the glutinous rice.

They were like apprentices, watching with wide eyes, and then holding two leaves in their hands, they began to imitate in a workmanlike manner.

“Oh no, it broke again…” Yu Ying suddenly exclaimed, staring at the broken Zongzi in her hand.

“Eh? Why did it break? Why does that one look fine?” Yan Hua pointed at a completed Zongzi.

“The first one broke because Yu Ying put too much glutinous rice in, and the second one broke because she squeezed too hard and tore the leaf. Pay attention to these two points, and you’ll be able to make a good Zongzi,” Su Bai explained. After all, it was their first time making Zongzi, mistakes were inevitable. They just needed to try a few more times.

“Alright,” Yu Ying’s fighting spirit was aroused, with a look of determination as she continued to take out leaves and start operating.

Yan Hua and the others were also mysteriously drawn into this mood, seriously taking up leaves and beginning to learn.

A few minutes later, Yu Ying finally successfully wrapped a complete Zongzi. Although the appearance was not particularly great, at least it was not broken or leaking, which was already enough for her to celebrate over.

“Great, I finally made one.” Yu Ying immediately displayed a bright smile.

Yan Hua, with a face that found it all very magical, also began to follow along with the steps, but the result was predictable. It did not go very smoothly.

The two of them were much worse than Yu Ying, having tried seven or eight times without success.

“Seems like I’m really not suited for making these things.” Yan Hua completely gave up and no longer took up leaves.

Co Co managed to barely wrap a Zongzi, but it still did not look as nice.

She sighed and said, “It seems like I’m not suited for this either, it’s just too difficult.”
