Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

”Annoying, isn’t it? I’ve already told you I need to think about it; don’t bring up marriage for now,” Yan Huan said irritably.

The phone hung in silence for a few seconds before a voice came through: ”Marriage? Looks like I should congratulate you.”

”Cheng Yue?” Yan Huan instantly recognized who it was.

”Mm.” Cheng Yue gave a light hum, impossible to discern any emotion, nor did he say anything further.

The air turned silent like that, lasting at least a minute before Yan Huan spoke, ”I didn’t expect you would call.”

”I didn’t expect you would talk about marriage so soon either,” Cheng Yue said in a deep voice.

To say he wasn’t upset would be a lie. For these four or five years, every day and night, this person was always in his heart.

He thought all obstacles had been cleared, that they would have a beautiful future together.

It never occurred to him that Shen Qiqi’s suicide would push things in a different direction.

”We’re just discussing it now. I don’t know when exactly we’ll get married,” Yan Huan said softly.

”Whenever you do get married, please let me know. I will give you my blessings!” Cheng Yue said calmly.

When Yan Huan heard this sentence, she realized Cheng Yue must have already let go.

Back then, she was worried that she was too blunt and might have hurt Cheng Yue.

It seems her worries were unnecessary; evidently, Cheng Yue moved on faster than she expected from the shadow of heartbreak.

”I will.” When Yan Huan said this, she didn’t quite know what kind of feeling she had in her heart.

After all, he once occupied such a beautiful part of her life.

”I may never return to Nancheng again,” Cheng Yue continued, feeling it necessary to give Yan Huan a definite explanation as he was ending a relationship.

”I know. After all, Jiangning is your home. It’s right for you not to come.”

”Besides, I’m going to marry Shen Qiqi.” Cheng Yue finally said it.

There was sudden silence on the other end of the phone.

Cheng Yue heard Yan Huan’s breath and knew she was still listening.

”It’s quick! And unexpected! But it’s within my expectations,” Yan Huan said.

He and Shen Qiqi were childhood friends. He always claimed he didn’t like Shen Qiqi, only treated her like a sister.

In fact, they’ve already had feelings they themselves hadn’t perceived.

Otherwise, Cheng Yue wouldn’t have returned to Nancheng for Shen Qiqi at that time.

”Aren’t you curious why?” Cheng Yue asked.

”I know.”

”No, you don’t!” Cheng Yue felt it was necessary to tell Yan Huan the real reason he was getting married, ”Shen Qiqi got into a car accident to save me! The doctor says she might never stand again in her life; her wish has always been to be with me, so I decided...”

Yan Huan was stunned for a moment and quickly asked, ”What about you? Are you okay?”

”I’m fine. She’s the one who got hurt! It is through this incident that I realized how she could risk everything for me. Maybe if she doesn’t marry me, she might never get married in this lifetime.”

”So you decided to fulfill her wish...”

”Yes,” Cheng Yue said softly, ”The strange thing is, I don’t feel any reluctance.”

”That’s good, I wish you happiness!” Other than this, Yan Huan didn’t know what else to say to him.
