Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Fate enjoys toying with people.

Sometimes it lets everything go smoothly, sometimes it leaves you in utter misfortune.

If fate is already predetermined, no matter how you try to escape, you can’t escape its grasp.

Yan Huan was undoubtedly the luckiest among the unfortunate.

Because of the escape of those two girls, that group of traffickers panicked and all went out to catch those two back. He,

she instead became the safest one.

By noon the next day, the oldest girl was caught back. Soon, she was sold away while crying and screaming.

When Yan Huan and that smaller girl had already escaped, she was very happy, it meant there was hope.

She still had the chance to return to her parents.

Quickly, her beautiful fantasy was shattered. Because, after a day she was transferred for an unknown reason.

It was a place deep in the mountains, similar to a warehouse.

Thinking back, that place might have been a place like the Mountain God Temple built by villagers long ago.

She didn’t know why she was suddenly transferred.

But when she arrived at that cold and damp place, unexpectedly, she saw the smaller girl, beaten and injured, curled up in the firewood pile.

”Move,” the traffickers said aggressively, kicking her down to the ground, ”I’m telling you, if anyone dares to run, I’ll kill you! Do you hear?!”

Yan Huan knew very well that if she resisted, there was no chance of survival.

So, she nodded quickly.

The girl lay there as if dead, not moving, not speaking, her eyes staring blankly outside.

The traffickers left, closing the wooden door with a creak.

Yan Huan quickly crawled over, half-kneeling in the hay, looking at the girl: ”Sister, are you okay? Did they hit you? Does it hurt?”

The girl nodded, tears rolling down.

Yan Huan used her small hands to tidy the girl’s hair, wiping her tears, and whispered: ”Sister, what do we do? Are we really going to be sold?”

Finally, there was spirit in the girl’s dull eyes. She gritted her teeth and whispered: ”No, I can’t be sold, I am sixteen, not like you. If you are sold, it’s to raise you as a child. If you meet a good family, you might not be abused. If I am sold, there is only one outcome.”

”What outcome, sister?”

”To become a bride and have children! If that really happens, my life is over! I’m still young, I can’t waste my youth here. I can’t become a bride for those men who can’t marry.” As the girl spoke, tears flowed down.

”You still want to run?” Yan Huan asked wide-eyed.

”Yes.” The girl decided, ”I want to run! I must leave here. Sister, don’t be afraid, I remember your situation. If I can escape, I’ll definitely report to the police! You’re a soldier’s child, your parents must be looking everywhere for you, if I report, they will know.”

”Yes, yes.” Yan Huan’s small hand tightly held the girl’s hand, ”Sister, you must escape! I will help you!”

”Thank you. Remember, sister, if you ever get a chance, find a way to escape! Don’t let this village’s people find out. They won’t help you, they’ll harm you!”

”I remember, sister.”
