Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

”Alright, let’s eat.” Meng Qingmei gave Ji Shuanglin a knowing look.

The old couple exchanged a smile.

”Yan Huan, it’s your first time in Jiangning. Are you getting used to the food here?” Meng Qingmei noticed Yan Huan finishing her bowl of soy milk and got up to pour her some more.

”I’m full, Auntie!” Yan Huan quickly refused, ”The breakfast here tastes really good. I’m quite used to it!”

”That’s good.” Meng Qingmei looked at Yan Huan with a loving gaze and said, ”We bought this house for Ji Chuan to use as a new home. He doesn’t usually stay here when he comes back; our family of three lives across the street. After breakfast, we’ll all head over there, and I’ll buy some delicious ingredients at noon to cook a few authentic Jiangning dishes for you to try.”

Yan Huan saw how kind and amiable Meng Qingmei was, and her initial nervousness gradually faded away: ”Auntie, your health isn’t great, so let’s not go through all the trouble. Just cook whatever you usually do. I can eat anything.”

”It’s no trouble at all!” Ji Shuanglin chimed in, ”Today, your Auntie and I introduced a prospective partner for Ji Chuan. She’s coming over to meet him, so we’ll have a grand meal at noon! Isn’t that nice?”

Ji Chuan? A prospective partner?

Yan Huan’s heart suddenly gave a fierce throb.

An indescribable emotion surged in her heart. What kind of feeling was that?

Yan Huan couldn’t figure it out for the moment.

”Mom, when did I say I wanted to go on a blind date? You’re tricking me!” Ji Chuan, worried Yan Huan might misunderstand, quickly explained.

”I’m really not feeling well. I’m not tricking you! The blind date is just happening by the way. This Xia Lin, the teacher, is really nice. You can’t just refuse her! Even if you don’t like her, you should at least meet her. What if you end up liking her? You never know.” After Meng Qingmei finished talking, she smiled at Yan Huan and said, ”Since you’re such a good friend of his, why don’t you help Ji Chuan and have a look? Sometimes women have a better eye for these things.”

Yan Huan was still caught up in figuring out her feelings and wasn’t listening to what Meng Qingmei was saying.

Ji Chuan noticed her dazed expression and thought she was upset.

He put down his bowl and stopped eating, then grabbed his mother Meng Qingmei’s arm and pulled her out.

As soon as mother and son entered the bedroom, Ji Chuan closed the door.

”Mom, why did you say those things in front of Yan Huan?” Ji Chuan’s brows were furrowed tightly.

”What? Did I say something wrong?” Meng Qingmei smiled slightly, looking calmly at Ji Chuan.

She didn’t say it out loud, but the meaning in her eyes was clear as day.

Ji Chuan was her son; how could she not understand his temperament?

”But why do you have to force me into a blind date today? You didn’t even mention it; you just made the decision for me in advance! You always say you respect my choices, yet now that my friend is here, you and Dad pull this stunt on me?” Ji Chuan was quite dissatisfied with his parents’ arrangement today.

”Son, your acting isn’t very good.” Meng Qingmei suddenly said.

Looking at the smile in his mother’s eyes, Ji Chuan instantly understood everything: ”Mom, you’re setting me up! You guys can’t trap your own son like this!”
