Reborn As Super Heiress

Chapter 1689: Chapter 1683: Mermaid Legend

Not only was Huo Sining lost in her thoughts, but even Gu Xu felt something was off. He looked at the woman in front of him with a wary expression, an inexplicable look in his eyes, and subconsciously reached out to pull his wife closer, as if to declare his territory.

However, Zheng Lixiang seemed oblivious to Gu Xu’s actions. After shaking hands with Huo Sining, she felt the delicate touch and couldn’t help but flash a faint glow on her face. She stared intently at Huo Sining and asked:

”Miss Huo, I have a small request. I’m not sure if I should say it.”

Huo Sining really wanted to refuse, afraid that this girl might say something outrageous, but she didn’t want to embarrass Zheng Huaqing in front of everyone, so she reluctantly nodded.

Zheng Lixiang saw Huo Sining nod and was delighted. She quickly turned and pulled out a stack of documents from her bag, handing them to Huo Sining:

”This is a movie our company is planning to film, called ’The Legend of the Mermaid.’ I think the female lead in it matches your temperament perfectly, Miss Huo. I’d like to invite you to play the role of the female lead. Would you be interested?”

Huo Sining was taken aback by what she heard. She hadn’t expected Zheng Lixiang’s small request to be this.

A movie offer out of the blue? This is too sudden!

She looked down at the script in her hand, originally intending to refuse outright, but when she lowered her head, she noticed a striking line of bold text on the top page of the documents.

—— Adapted from the real event of the ’Oriental Pearl’ maritime disaster.

Huo Sining’s hand movements stalled, and she raised her head out of curiosity to ask, ”Did you write this story?”

Zheng Lixiang nodded and shook her head: ”Not exactly. I came up with the idea, and my company’s team of writers completed it. In fact, the inspiration came from my father.”

”Your father?” Huo Sining instinctively looked at Zheng Huaqing.

Zheng Lixiang nodded: ”Yes, my father was on that ship when the Oriental Pearl incident happened.”

”The maritime disaster happened suddenly, but all the passengers who fell into the sea were rescued. Although the maritime authority at the time explained that the rescued passengers were swept onto a deserted island by the waves, that explanation was merely a way to placate the public.”

”My father was an eyewitness. He saw with his own eyes that a woman with excellent swimming skills saved those who fell into the water after the waves capsized the Oriental Pearl.”

”This account was corroborated by several other survivors. They described a woman with a long, seaweed-like hair, wearing a hat. Since it happened at night, they couldn’t discern her features, but many survivors claimed their rescuer was a mermaid.”

Zheng Lixiang’s eyes shone with a mysterious glow, clearly intrigued and fascinated by this supernatural incident.

Upon hearing Zheng Lixiang’s words, Gu Xu’s body paused involuntarily, and he instinctively lowered his head to look at his wife.

Gu Xu had heard of the Oriental Pearl incident but didn’t know his wife’s identity or the secrets she harbored at the time, so he never connected the event to her.

Now, hearing Zheng Lixiang mention mermaids and sea rescues, for some reason, the first person that came to Gu Xu’s mind was his wife.

To silently rescue hundreds of people underwater and discreetly transport them to an island—such feats are beyond the capability of an ordinary person. Thus, Gu Xu had no doubt about the conclusion.

No need to guess; it must have been his wife who did it.

Huo Sining was also surprised upon hearing Zheng Huaqing’s family was planning to make a movie about the maritime disaster. She found this quite difficult to understand.

”Mr. Zheng, do you really believe there are mermaids in this world? Although I didn’t personally experience the Oriental Pearl incident, I remember reading news reports at the time saying many people believed it was dolphins that did the rescue. Could it be you were just a little delirious from the water and imagined things?”

Huo Sining couldn’t help but ask skeptically.

Zheng Huaqing chuckled: ”I can’t say if mermaids exist, but I believe audiences would rather hear a romantic mermaid story than be told that dolphins did the rescuing. Particularly, a mermaid tale based on real events makes it more believable and sparks the imagination, don’t you think, Miss Huo?”

Initially, Huo Sining thought this father-daughter pair discovered evidence of mermaids, which explained their enthusiasm and willingness to spend heavily on such a film. Now, hearing Zheng Huaqing’s reasoning, she couldn’t help but want to roll her eyes.

Indeed, a shrewd businessman remains a shrewd businessman. Despite his appearance of enlightenment as if having a brush with death, Zheng Huaqing could not shed his profit-driven nature.

Yet, regarding the facts presented by Zheng Huaqing, Huo Sining couldn’t argue against them.

The world tends to assign mystical elements to events science cannot explain—aliens, deities and demons, monsters. The more far-fetched they are, the more they intrigue audiences, becoming more mysterious and eye-catching.

Upon reflection, despite her initial intention to decline outright, she found herself suddenly intrigued for some reason.

She opened the documents handed to her by Zheng Lixiang, indeed containing the script for ”The Legend of the Mermaid.” Huo Sining read quickly, practically devouring the story at lightning speed, and soon finished it.

Reality is often more far-fetched than fiction, and while Zheng Lixiang’s script was decent and engaging, it remained limited by human imagination.

Likely her screenwriting team never imagined that the real female protagonist of this story not only existed but was indeed a Jiaoren.

Because these writers couldn’t step outside human cognitive patterns, they couldn’t conceive the original character as possessing a Water-Repelling Pearl, capable of Invisibility, controlling Space, and halting time—a true mermaid!

After reading the story, a smile unknowingly crept to Huo Sining’s lips as she looked over at Gu Xu, blinking with a mischievous gaze:

”If you want me to make this movie, it’s not impossible, but the story will need major revisions if I’m to star in it.”
