The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 904: Chapter 904: Just Kill Him

Daya’s heart panicked, and she rushed past him into the kitchen.

Meng Yunzheng raised his eyebrows and looked towards Zhao Xi who came out afterwards, his expression somewhat subtle.

Was this a rejection? Otherwise, why would he look so dejected?

While the Lu family was away for a meal, Meng Yunzheng lagged two steps behind and whispered to Zhao Xi, ”Did you confess your feelings?”

”Yeah.”

”Judging by your look, it seems that things didn’t go very smoothly.”

Zhao Xi looked pitifully adorable, ”It was too sudden, I overheard something about Miss Wei introducing her to an older brother, and I couldn’t hold back, just lost my composure. I was like a duck being pushed onto a perch, completely unprepared, and blurted it all out. Now, thinking about it, I don’t even know what I was saying.”

Meng Yunzheng looked at him sympathetically, ”Luckily, Yu and I are smart, we understood our own feelings early on.”

Zhao Xi grinned fiercely, ”What’s there for you to be proud of? Daya didn’t tell me to get lost; she even replied that she would think it over carefully. I think my chances are still very good. By then, we will surely get married before you do.”

Meng Yunzheng, ”...” Might as well beat him to death.

He sneered coldly and turned to enter the house.

The dining table was bustling with noise, and those who knew didn’t bring up the matter, pretending ignorance.

Only Daya was somewhat preoccupied, too embarrassed to look towards Zhao Xi, and even when picking dishes, she only took from what was in front of her.

Shu Yu thought that at this rate, it wouldn’t be long before her father and grandmother noticed, and by then if they started asking questions, she would probably want to crawl under the table.

As an empathetic younger sister, Shu Yu immediately started discussing the renovation of the mansion, ”Dad, did you go see Craftsman Zheng today? What did he say?”

Lu Erbai had just glanced at Daya, sensing something odd about her, but then heard Shu Yu’s query and turned his gaze back to the conversation, ”I talked with him, and it just so happens he’s not busy at the moment, so he accepted the job. I’ll take him to the mansion tomorrow to have a look. Once he has the drawings ready and we prepare the bricks, tiles, and timber, we can start work.”

”What about hiring workers?”

Lu Erbai had thought about this already, ”I was originally planning to recruit from Shangshi Village, but this time of year is busy with farming, and the peasants are too occupied to spare people. We will have to look in the county town.”

The county town does have casual laborers, but the experienced ones usually stick with a particular craftsman and are unlikely to abandon their current employment to work with us.

As for those miscellaneous casual workers, given the mix of the good and the bad, it’s unclear who is trustworthy, and they often bring conflict.

This is Yu’s house, and a grand one at that, so naturally, Lu Erbai doesn’t want any trouble. He’d prefer everything to go smoothly so they could move in sooner.

This is also why he wanted to find people from Shangshi Village; he’s familiar with everyone there - who is diligent, who has certain skills, who has conflicts with whom - he knows it all clearly.

But the timing was not favorable.

Craftsman Zheng only needed two or three people for his current work. He had considered starting a team in the past, but after the incident that happened, he’s been getting less work, with short-term projects.

At most, other foremen lacking labor might ask for his help.

Yu’s shop renovation brought in Craftsman Zheng last time, which, seen by many, actually brought him quite a bit of business.

However, such business was, after all, not frequent, but repairing the Village Chief’s mansion this time, the future prospects for such jobs should be promising.
