My Alleged Husband

Chapter 1666: Chapter 1460: Dream

In a haze, as if in a dream, who knows how much pain lies in my heart?

Zhang Yichen finally listened to what Zhang Ni had to say. When he was about to rest, he heard it—the alarm went off inside. He quickly rushed over and called out, and the doctor went in, discovering that the situation had worsened.

Seeing his parents in the intensive care unit, his heart could no longer stay calm while waiting. But at that moment, he suddenly realized that his parents were once again on the path of resuscitation.

Seeing his parents already on life support, he understood how severe their condition was. Using life support meant their situation was much more serious than before, didn’t it?

The doctor was inside desperately trying to save them while Old Master Zhang waited for the news at home. But when the news came that his son’s condition had worsened, how desperate he felt. He feared losing his beloved son forever this time.

Zhang Yichen watched his parents lying there in such pain, and in that moment, all his resentment towards them dissipated. Perhaps from the start, he shouldn’t have hated them. Every decision they made wasn’t what they really wanted—they had simply ended up here, with no way to turn back, so they continued down this mistaken path.

Ran Zhihan knew what her husband was thinking. Some words are better left unsaid, because speaking them might hurt, turning words of comfort into salt on an open wound.

Zhang Ni used to deeply resent his grandparents for not being there since his birth. He never knew what it felt like to be cherished by them.

But just now, in that instant, if he could see his grandparents living peacefully outside, he would rather they never returned home. If coming home meant facing this fate, then why come back to suffer like this?

Old Master Zhang hurriedly rushed from home to the hospital. When he arrived, he saw the doctors still busy trying to save his son. Nearly losing his balance, he sat heavily in a chair nearby. Everyone was stunned—never had they seen Old Master Zhang, always so composed, look like this. How deeply he was suffering and exhausted inside!

”Grandfather, weren’t you supposed to wait at home for news? Why did you come now? Don’t you know that your body needs rest? If Father and Mother see you like this, how worried they’d be!”

”Yichen, tell Grandpa how are your parents? Is their situation not as bad as it seems? Have the doctors saved them? You must stay here and look after them, for they are your parents. I have no other wishes for this life, just that they can be safe and sound. Even if they won’t stay by my side in the future, it doesn’t matter to me.

Nothing is more important than them living peacefully and happily. I, as an old man, can let go of everything else. As long as they can be happy, what else matters to me? Even if they abandon me again and leave for another place, as long as they’re alive, that’s my greatest comfort!”

Zhang Yichen understood his grandfather’s feelings all too well.

How could he not feel the same? He’d rather his parents not return and lie there motionless. Repeated resuscitation wears down everyone’s will. He couldn’t bear it, seeing the doctors busily trying to save them, injecting rescue medication time and again.

He was truly worried—worried that something might indeed happen to his parents. He had no way to bear such pain. For him now, perhaps the only thing he could do was wait for his parents to safely come out of the intensive care unit.

An hour later...

The doctor came out. Old Master Zhang quickly rushed up, grabbing the doctor’s hand, anxiously asking, ”Doctor, is my son okay? Have they escaped danger yet?”

Zhang Yichen, Ran Zhihan, and Zhang Ni stood by, watching the doctor for the final answer. They feared the doctor’s response would cause them pain, yet they had to stand strong, waiting for the doctor’s final word.

”The two of them have been temporarily stabilized but have not yet escaped the danger period. Their condition has worsened slightly, which may become more serious. We hope your family can be prepared for the worst.”

”Doctor, you must save my son and daughter-in-law. They finally came back, and I haven’t had the chance to properly take care of them. How could such things happen? Please help them, I beg you...”

”It’s our responsibility as doctors. We will do our utmost to help and try our best to save them. However, we cannot predict changes. If nothing unexpected happens, they might escape the danger period. But if something like today happens again, I cannot guarantee their safety.”

To Old Master Zhang, the doctor’s words were like a ticking time bomb. He never imagined his son would face such outcomes. Every consequence was from things he once did, never considering how many people he hurt. Now, watching his beloved son lying in the hospital room, he, as a father, could only stand in the hallway, helpless, realizing how incapable he was.

”Grandfather, don’t worry too much. I believe Father and Mother are strong-willed. I believe they will pull through safely. We have to believe in them, don’t we?

We should take care of ourselves so when they wake up, they won’t feel any guilt over our fatigue, right?”

Zhang Yichen waited three years, but still, Zhihan did not return.
