This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

When saying this sentence, Gu Qinghong felt a bit unhappy, which made her tone somewhat harsh.

Du Heng noticed this, so he patiently explained, ”The little girl is injured, and of course as her mother, she would be anxious. It’s inevitable for her emotions to suddenly become agitated.

Although some of her words just now were somewhat unacceptable, we must understand a mother’s heart to protect her child.”

As he spoke, Du Heng glanced at Gu Qinghong beside him and said with a smile, ”You’re not married yet, so you haven’t experienced the feeling of being a parent, which is why you can’t quite understand.

If what happened today had occurred to my daughter, I’m afraid my lover and I wouldn’t have reacted in a more civilized manner than the mom and dad did just now.

It’s possible that our reaction could have been even more volatile than theirs.”

Gu Qinghong’s reaction was similar to what Du Heng had described; she couldn’t comprehend the feelings Du Heng talked about.

Although Du Heng’s explanation eased her mood slightly, her indignation towards the woman’s excessively harsh words remained, ”What you said might be right, but that woman’s way of speaking is really detestable.

You probably don’t know that many fights, disputes, and even domestic violence stem from behaviors like that woman just now... or should I say, such sharp-tongued actions.”

Gu Qinghong is a second-generation, but she’s also a police officer and certainly understands the probabilities and underlying reasons for certain cases.

So when Du Heng heard her words, he didn’t challenge them, but instead continued with a smile, ”When your eyes see evil, everything you look at seems befouled and polluted.

When your heart harkens to brightness, you are surrounded by warmth and sunshine.

This world is already so difficult, so it’s always good to look at the sunshine and cheer yourself up.”

Gu Qinghong wrinkled her nose, tilted her head to glance at Du Heng, ”I’m a police officer; I surely see more evil than you do, so I agree with your last sentence.

But the previous two sentences, although they sound plausible, do they work? Do you really think that way? Can you truly do it?

How do I feel like you’re somewhat avoiding reality?”

Listening to Gu Qinghong’s question, Du Heng suddenly smiled helplessly and took a deep breath, saying, ”Whether it works or not, we have to make it work.”

”Why?” Gu Qinghong asked with genuine curiosity.

”An old man in his 70s sat alone in front of me because of a 200 yuan prescription, discussing with his son over the phone for thirty minutes about taking three doses.

Because of 600 yuan, his son hesitated to make a decision. Do you think it’s because his son doesn’t want to spend money on his father’s treatment, or is it simply that the family is struggling and can’t spare the 600 yuan?”

Du Heng chuckled helplessly and continued, ”A six-year-old boy registered himself, inquired himself, but because of a 120 yuan prescription fee, he lingered at the consultation room door, kept asking me if there was a cheaper medicine available.

Do we guess his parents have passed leaving him uncared for, or suspect he was abandoned by his parents?”

Gu Qinghong opened her mouth, hesitated for a moment then asked, ”Is it really as miserable as you say, even 600 yuan…”

Du Heng looked at Gu Qinghong, smiled, and a thought flashed through his mind ’Why don’t they eat minced meat?’.

Gu Qinghong’s reaction was remarkably similar to the sentiment expressed in that saying.

”Don’t mention 600 yuan, now, amongst the people we see, maybe someone can’t even come up with 600 yuan.”

Du Heng looked around the small square, ”Some may have no money at all, and they might be in huge debt.

Perhaps right now, someone’s creditor or a debt-collecting agency is giving them a call.”

Gu Qinghong remained silent for a moment. Though she hasn’t spent money extravagantly in her life so far, she has never encountered any distressing situation because of money.

So she really struggled to empathize with Du Heng’s point of view.

”What does this have to do with you?”

”A lot,” Du Heng took a deep breath, smiled anew, ”Guess, if all I see in my eyes is evil, what would I turn into?”

This time, curiosity piqued Gu Qinghong, and she quickly asked, ”What would you become?”

Du Heng didn’t rush to answer, instead he took the cold drink from Gu Qinghong’s hand and sipped slowly before speaking, ”Our job as doctors is indeed one that requires warmth.

Without warmth, we’re no different from machines, lacking emotional fluctuation.

But patients are varied; their professional backgrounds are diverse, their reasons for illness quirky, and some of them come from bizarre families.

At times like these, doctors need to inject a bit of personal emotion.

When warmth is needed, you ought to be like a gentle spring breeze; when kindness is required, you must consider the patient’s perspective; when principles must be upheld, then your heart must be hard as iron.”

Seeing Du Heng sit on the steps again, Gu Qinghong didn’t hesitate to sit down next to him, with curiosity, she watched Du Heng, waiting for his next words.

Du Heng chuckled while looking at the place ahead where the argument continued, and quietly said, ”If all I see with my eyes is evil, then over time, I might either turn into a cold, indifferent robot lacking empathy.

Or under the influence of such evil, some negative traits might gradually arise, and over time these negative emotions accumulate in my work.

In the end, either I’d lose my sanity or leave my beloved post.”

Gu Qinghong held her drink and hesitated, then slowly said, ”Why do I feel that what you say is so similar to my job?”

”Of course, they’re alike,” Du Heng laughed, ”In your profession, you see the darkest sides, far more evil than we do.

But my profession, though the extent of evil is not as severe as yours, has much more various negative emotions.

You and we are alike, if we don’t believe in light, then problems will inevitably arise.”

Gu Qinghong nodded lightly twice, and softly said, ”I’ve only been working for two years, I haven’t experienced what you describe so deeply.

Nonetheless, I think what you said is spot on.

Take for instance our former brigade leader…”

Upon hearing that Gu Qinghong has only worked for two years, Du Heng was a bit surprised.

Two years, and she is already participating in such high-level training, seems like her father is really willing to pave the way for his daughter.

Look at Wu Shengnan, although her family background contrasts little compared to Gu Qinghong.

But comparing the behaviors of the two parents, it’s indeed completely different.

Her brother-in-law, a criminal police turned almost sterile. Though now he’s been transferred to sit in the office, the rank is similar to that of Dong Yuezhang and doesn’t receive any particular favor.

Wu Shengnan, similar situation. Without my support at the start of last year, she would probably exchange her legs for medals. Thanks to last year’s outstanding performance in the team, she eventually got the chance for this training.

Comparing this with Gu Qinghong, it’s truly incomparable.

Du Heng’s thoughts moved quickly in his mind, dispersing to who knows where, but suddenly hearing Gu Qinghong wanting to give examples, Du Heng quickly regained his thoughts, ”Okay, we will stop this topic here.

In any case, I have only one thought, encountering unpleasant patients is inevitable, but I want to believe in light, I believe there’s more kindness in this world than malicious intent.”

Gu Qinghong listened to Du Heng’s motto and couldn’t help but roll her eyes, ”Why don’t you say you believe in Ultraman?”

Du Heng chuckled and no longer engaged with her remark, instead reminded her, ”Go ask if they’ve arrived yet? I feel uneasy wandering around outside.”
