After learning from Chen Mo that the Pokémon egg might soon hatch, Absol became unusually excited over the next few days. Aside from its usual training, it spent almost all its time glued to the egg.

And whenever Chen Mo tried to take the egg away, he could clearly feel Absol’s strong reluctance.

After thinking it over, Chen Mo figured this was probably similar to the Quagsire that had originally cared for the egg—it was simply Absol’s maternal instinct as a female Pokémon.

That’s right.

Among Chen Mo’s five Pokémon, Absol was the only female.

That was also one of the main reasons why Chen Mo had entrusted the egg to her in the first place.

”It looks like Absol has already treated this egg as her own child…”

Every time he temporarily took the egg away, Chen Mo had to endure a bit of Absol’s resentment, leaving him helpless.

Still, it couldn’t be helped.

Ever since Chen Mo concluded that the life inside the egg was likely a Riolu, he had been using his Aura power daily to try and stimulate it.

At least three times a day—now increased to five.

But something strange happened.

Aside from that one movement at the Pokémon Medical Center, the egg had shown no further reaction.

Everything seemed to return to square one.

”…Could it be…”

Chen Mo glanced at Absol, who was protectively guarding the egg, deep in thought.

Thinking back, when the egg moved that day, Absol had been extremely distressed, believing the egg had died.

Could it be—

The egg reacted to Absol’s emotions?

But Chen Mo quickly shook his head.

That sounded far-fetched.

And if emotional bonds mattered, wouldn’t the Quagsire—who cared for it for months—have triggered a reaction long ago?

”Sigh…”

Chen Mo let out a soft sigh.

The egg being healthy was exciting—

But the lack of progress was exhausting.

Just then—

The doorbell rang.

He walked over and saw a familiar figure waving enthusiastically outside.

”Brother Mo! I’m back!”

Chen Mo’s eyes lit up as he opened the door.

”You’ve got some nerve—keeping something this big from me? And why was your phone off when I called?”

The grinning young man before him—

Was none other than Ah Hui, who had been missing for a long time.

Ah Hui scratched his head sheepishly.

”Didn’t you already figure it out, Brother Mo?”

Chen Mo sighed.

A few days after returning from the medical center, he discovered that the plants in Ah Hui’s yard weren’t being tended by him at all—but by Feng Lan, his childhood friend.

Sensing something off, Chen Mo asked Brother Yi to investigate.

Soon—

They found that Ah Hui and the buzz-cut young man had been seen near Mount Taibai.

Chen Mo had facepalmed at the news.

This guy is fearless…

Going into a place like Mount Taibai with a weak Caterpie—

Was practically asking for trouble.

Ah Hui smiled honestly.

”If I told you, you might’ve come with me. I wanted to handle this myself.”

”And besides, if you had come, who would’ve handled Mount Zangqing?”

Chen Mo shook his head.

That whole incident still felt… strange.

Especially those mysterious Unown.

It made him wonder if Ho-Oh had been watching all along.

”Anyway, tell me about your journey.”

”Sure.”

Ah Hui nodded, then looked to the side.

”Hao Ran, come in too.”

The former buzz-cut youth stepped into the light.

Chen Mo noticed—

He had hair now.

Maybe ”buzz-cut guy” wasn’t appropriate anymore.

As Chen Mo welcomed them inside—

He suddenly noticed a chubby dark-blue figure behind Hao Ran.

”…Is that Munchlax?”

The little creature turned around, holding half a sausage.

”Munch?”

”…It really is.”

Chen Mo stared.

”Don’t tell me you brought this little guy into Mount Taibai too?”

”…We did.”

Chen Mo: ”…”

That they survived—

Was nothing short of a miracle.

—

Inside—

Chen Mo brought out all the snacks and fruit he had stocked.

Pikachu and gengar were puzzled.

Why take everything out?

Then—

They saw.

Munchlax grabbed a bunch of grapes—

Swallowed them whole in under a second.

Spat out the stem—

Perfectly into the trash can.

Then tore open a bag of cookies—

Dumped them into its mouth.

Two seconds.

Gone.

”Pika…”

”Geng…”

Both were stunned.

What kind of eating speed was this!?

Soon—

A fifth of the snack pile was gone.

Munchlax beamed happily.

Then—

Pikachu cautiously offered its favorite tomato chips.

Munchlax paused.

Then—

Carefully tasted them.

Chewed slowly.

Eyes narrowed in bliss.

”Munch!”

It nodded approvingly.

”Pika!”

Pikachu’s eyes sparkled.

A kindred spirit!

It quickly offered more.

But then—

Munchlax did something unexpected.

Instead of tossing the empty bag—

It flattened it neatly on the ground.

Then poured chips onto it.

”Munch munch!”

It gestured to Pikachu and gengar.

Sharing.

Both Pokémon were deeply moved.

—

Watching this scene, Chen Mo smiled.

”Munchlax has such a good personality.”

Hao Ran nodded.

”At first, I thought it was just trouble because of how much it eats.”

”But later… I realized how kind it is.”

”If it weren’t for Munchlax, Ah Hui and I might not have made it out alive.”

Ah Hui agreed.

Caterpie was too weak—

Many dangerous encounters were resolved thanks to Munchlax.

Even though it ate all their food in three days—

It would go out, find food, and bring it back.

In truth—

They owed it everything.

—

”Brother Mo…”

Hao Ran looked serious.

”I have something to ask.”

”Go ahead.”

”I want to become Munchlax’s trainer.”

”Can you teach me how to raise one?”

Chen Mo felt a wave of emotion.

He remembered—

This same young man had once been afraid of Caterpie.

Now—

He had formed a deep bond with Munchlax.

”Of course.”

Chen Mo smiled warmly.

But then—

He realized something.

”Wait… where’s your Caterpie?”

Ah Hui grinned.

”You finally noticed!”

Then—

He opened his backpack.

And gently took out—

A crescent-shaped green Pokémon.

”Brother Mo—Caterpie evolved!”

”It’s now a healthy Metapod!”
