The unknown Pokémon turned its head. The moment it saw Mo Ji and the others, it blinked its dull eyes. Its teeth—like shattered glass—parted slightly, its expression clearly puzzled.

”Ya-wu?”

It didn’t look threatening at all.

Mo Ji let out a quiet breath of relief.

Even so, he didn’t dare approach an unknown Pokémon recklessly. As a police officer who regularly patrolled the Hongjingpo Forest, caution was second nature to him.

”Xiao An, Xiao Dong, you two—”

Before Mo Ji could finish speaking—

Out of the corner of his eye, he suddenly noticed the unknown Pokémon’s expression change. It was as if it had discovered some kind of treasure—its previously vacant eyes now shining brightly.

”Ya-wu!”

Then—

The tattered Pokémon moved. Its seemingly short legs burst forth with astonishing speed.

Mo Ji quickly realized something.

”This Pokémon’s target is Xiao An!”

He shot Donggua a look. The latter immediately understood and quickly pulled the bewildered Anzi backward.

”Rattata, I’m counting on you—Quick Attack!”

At Mo Ji’s command, Rattata dashed forward, its body turning into a streak of white lightning as it slammed into the unknown Pokémon.

”Ya-wu!”

The attack landed cleanly, sending the unknown Pokémon flying.

It worked!

A look of ”just as I thought” appeared on Mo Ji’s face.

Since a Normal-type move like Quick Attack could hit it, this Pokémon clearly wasn’t a Ghost-type as they had suspected.

”Time to go.”

Seeing the unknown Pokémon struggling to get back up, Mo Ji was about to call Rattata and retreat—

When suddenly, the sound of footsteps—already running far away—came rushing back.

Turning his head, he saw Donggua and Anzi sprinting back toward him, faces filled with terror.

”Bro!”

No explanation was needed.

Mo Ji had already seen what was behind them—

More of those tattered Pokémon, chasing after them in numbers.

This is bad.

Mo Ji’s expression darkened.

He hadn’t expected a garbage processing plant to harbor so many wild Pokémon.

What were the people managing this place even doing?

”Holy—!”

Unlike Donggua—who had military training and kept fit—Anzi, after months of staying indoors, quickly ran out of stamina. Within moments, he slowed down.

The instant he fell behind, one of the ragged Pokémon chasing him leapt forward excitedly, grabbing onto his pant leg with its tiny claws.

Startled, Anzi lost his footing and tumbled to the ground.

”Ya-wu!”

The scruffy little Pokémon narrowed its eyes and hugged Anzi’s leg, rubbing against him repeatedly.

”Hm?”

Seeing this, Mo Ji—who had been about to send Rattata to help—paused.

Something felt… off.

The reason he had been able to bond with Rattata was his genuine fondness for Pokémon.

He didn’t harbor prejudice against them, and even in a seemingly dangerous moment like this, he remained calm enough to think clearly.

From what he could see, this unknown Pokémon didn’t seem to want to hurt Anzi—

If anything, it seemed to be trying to get close to him.

However—

Anzi didn’t see it that way.

Heartbroken, unemployed, living in decay, with a completely wrecked schedule…

Already in a fragile mental state, being ”attacked” by a Pokémon that had seemingly followed him for days finally snapped the last thread holding him together.

”Stay away from me!”

With a hysterical shout, Anzi lashed out and kicked the Pokémon clinging to him.

Mo Ji frowned—he hadn’t had time to warn him.

Caught completely off guard, the ragged Pokémon was sent rolling across the ground before lying still, motionless.

Donggua, standing nearby, muttered:

”…Impressive.”

He actually felt a bit relieved.

These Pokémon that even the Pokédex couldn’t identify didn’t seem very strong—if even Anzi could kick one away, then Rattata should have no trouble dealing with them.

”Get back!”

A sudden shout came from behind.

Donggua froze.

Then he saw it—

The Pokémon that had just been kicked was now enveloped in a mysterious white light.

His pupils shrank.

Without hesitation, he grabbed Anzi off the ground and ran toward Mo Ji.

”Bro, is that—?!”

”Yeah.”

Mo Ji stared at the figure growing larger within the white light, confirming Donggua’s suspicion.

”It’s evolving…”

”Are you kidding me—”

Donggua was stunned.

Just moments ago, he had been thinking how great it would be to witness his cousin’s Rattata evolve into Raticate.

Instead—

He was now watching an unknown enemy Pokémon evolve right in front of them.

”Anzi, what the hell did you do?!”

Donggua couldn’t help but shout.

Anzi, equally panicked, shook his head frantically.

”I—I don’t know!”

”It’s not his fault,” Mo Ji interrupted. ”If a Pokémon evolves, it means it has already reached that threshold. Whether Anzi was here or not, it would have evolved anyway.”

Of course…

That kick probably sped things up a bit.

Mo Ji added silently in his mind.

The evolution light came quickly—and faded just as fast.

Soon—

As the glow dissipated, the once 30-centimeter-tall creature had transformed into a massive, nearly two-meter-tall beast resembling a heap of garbage.

”Da-si!”

Yellow, unidentified gas constantly seeped from its gaping mouth as it fixed its gaze on Anzi—the one who had kicked it.

Mo Ji could clearly sense the anger radiating from it.

”Rattata, prepare for battle.”

”Pula-da!”

Without hesitation, Rattata leapt in front of Mo Ji, facing the towering creature that loomed like a mountain.

Mo Ji turned to Donggua and Anzi.

”I’ll create an opening with Rattata—you two run—”

Before he could finish—

A strange, low growl interrupted him.

”Nuona-si…”

In their line of sight—
