”Gengaaaar!!!”

With a sharp, ear-piercing roar, the light of evolution surrounding Haunter completely faded.

In its place stood a round, plump, purple-black figure under the moonlight.

Its blood-red eyes stared directly at Chen Mo and the others, its entire body radiating a violent aura.

Combined with Haunter’s natural traits, the surrounding temperature dropped noticeably.

”Sceptile…”

Sceptile’s expression turned serious.

Just as it was about to move into a defensive stance—

A small yellow figure dashed forward like lightning.

”Sceptile!?”

Its face changed drastically.

The twig in its mouth fell to the ground.

Too fast.

There was no way to stop it.

It could only watch as Pikachu rushed toward the newly evolved Haunter—completely defenseless.

”Sceptile! Sceptile!”

It called out urgently to Chen Mo and the others.

But then—

Something felt off.

The human who should’ve been the most worried—

Was now completely calm.

Pidgeotto looked helpless.

Absol—

Simply rolled its eyes.

”…?”

”Pika~”

Pikachu’s cheerful voice rang out.

Sceptile turned.

Pikachu—

Was perfectly fine.

Meanwhile—

The once terrifying Haunter—

Now wore an awkward, pained expression.

”Haunter…”

Holding Pikachu in its short arms, Haunter felt… strange.

Back as Haunter—

Its floating hands were extremely flexible.

It could easily catch Pikachu mid-air.

But now—

Haunter looked at its short, attached arms.

If it hadn’t reacted quickly—

It might’ve dropped Pikachu.

At that moment—

Chen Mo’s gentle voice came from behind.

”It’s normal to feel awkward after evolving.”

”You’ve evolved before—remember how it felt back then.”

”You’ll get used to it soon.”

Haunter nodded seriously.

Back then—

Those floating hands were unfamiliar too.

But once it adapted—

They became incredibly useful.

Especially for eating.

Though—

They weren’t great for combat.

Most of its moves had been special attacks.

Which—

Was typical for its species.

But now—

Haunter recalled something.

When Marshadow controlled it—

Using Thunder Punch, Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Shadow Punch…

That feeling—

Was incredible.

Now—

With its new body—

It felt full of power.

Maybe—

It could try a more diverse fighting style.

”Heh heh heh…”

Haunter let out a sinister laugh.

Chen Mo blinked.

Good thing he couldn’t read its thoughts.

Otherwise he’d say:

”Your Attack stat is 65. Your Special Attack is 130…”

Still—

This wasn’t a game.

More options were always good.

Hearing Haunter’s laugh—

Chen Mo started laughing too.

Soon—

Pikachu and Pidgeotto joined in.

Absol shook its head—

But stayed close.

As for Marshadow—

Clearly exhausted—

It dodged Haunter’s attempt to grab it—

Then slipped back into Chen Mo’s shadow.

Suddenly—

Chen Mo noticed Sceptile standing alone.

”Oh—sorry, Sceptile.”

”Haunter likes pranks.”

”Pika pika!”

Pikachu nodded in agreement.

”Haunter!”

Haunter looked aggrieved.

It had tried so hard to act scary—

Especially to scare Chen Mo.

But Pikachu ruined everything.

Pikachu tilted its head cutely.

”Pika~”

”Alright, enough.”

Chen Mo rubbed Haunter’s head.

”With acting like that, how could we not see through it?”

Then he added:

”…Well, except Sceptile.”

”We’ve known Haunter long enough to read it instantly.”

Sceptile: ”…”

”Anyway—Haunter, pick your pranks better next time.”

”Haunter!”

It grinned.

But thought:

If you have to pick the moment… is it still a prank?

Chen Mo immediately rubbed its head again.

”Don’t think I didn’t hear that.”

He smiled.

Haunter—

Now standing as tall as him—

Felt surreal.

”By the way—did you gain any new abilities?”

Unlike Pikachu and Pidgeotto—

Haunter already knew all its species’ moves.

Including Destiny Bond and Dream Eater.

So—

What changed?

”Haunter…”

It thought.

Then—

Its eyes lit up.

It jumped onto the ruins—

Under the moonlight.

”Haunter!”

Clap!

Purple flames appeared around it.

”…Will-O-Wisp.”

Chen Mo recognized it.

But—

Haunter had never used it before.

And clearly—

Wasn’t skilled at it.

So why show this?

Then—

Clap again.

The flames changed.

Dark red—

Mixed in.

Then—

Yellow-green.

The aura grew dangerous.

”…Wait…”

Chen Mo activated [Detection Eye].

And saw:

[Affected by unknown power…]

He’d seen this before.

Pidgeotto → Zekrom’s residual powerPikachu → Zekrom crystal during evolution

And now—

Haunter.

The red flames—

Giratina.

The green—

Marshadow.

Haunter had absorbed both.

Far more extreme than Pikachu.

Chen Mo recalled Marshadow’s exhausted state.

…He felt a little guilty.

”Haunter!”

Haunter played with the flames happily.

Chen Mo smiled.

This goofy Pokémon—

Now had limitless potential.

With power from two top-tier Ghost-types—

Even he couldn’t predict its future.

”…And if it Mega Evolves…”

He thought deeply.

Mega Evolution—

A higher stage.

Temporary—

But explosive.

If Haunter could Mega Evolve—

It might even rival that injured Suicune.

”…I should prioritize that.”

Conveniently—

Most of his team could Mega Evolve.

Except Pikachu.

And Magikarp—

Who refused to evolve.

”Haunter!”

It called out.

Chen Mo looked up.

Haunter waved—

The flames shot toward nearby rocks.

The stones—

Burned instantly.

Reduced to ash.

The flames kept spreading.

”…So that’s it.”

Chen Mo understood.

Will-O-Wisp—

In games, causes burn.

But here—

Enhanced.

Previously—

Pikachu’s paralysis had affected Suicune.

But normally—

Status effects weaken against stronger foes.

Against Legendaries—

They’re almost useless.

But now—

Haunter’s flames—

Were different.

It was telling him:

It could apply enhanced status effects.

Even to powerful enemies.

Below Legendary level—

These flames would be devastating.

Even against Legendaries—

They could interfere significantly.

Chen Mo’s eyes lit up.

This—

Was huge.

Before—

He thought about Mega Evolution for power.

Now—

With this—

He could use kite strategies.

Especially against grounded opponents.

And—

One more thought.

In games—

Only one status at a time.

But reality?

Unconfirmed.

If Pikachu’s paralysis—

And Haunter’s burn—

Could stack…

”…We need to test this.”
