Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

Naturally, Anzi didn’t have any scrap metal at home—only piles of uncollected household garbage.

”I’m not trying to nag, Anzi,” Donggua sighed, ”but putting everything else aside, this is where you live. No matter what, you should at least keep your place somewhat clean.”

”Well…”

Anzi scratched his head awkwardly.

”I know, Brother Donggua. Give me a second—I’ll start cleaning right away.”

”Forget it.”

Donggua waved his hand.

”If we wait for you to finish cleaning, it’ll be lunchtime already.”

”…”

Anzi gave an embarrassed smile and said nothing more.

He turned his head and looked at the filthy living room, letting out a quiet sigh.

Maybe… he really had sunk too far.

Since Anzi’s apartment was in the suburbs, stepping outside meant there were plenty of open areas nearby where Rattata could show its strength.

The three of them arrived at an empty lot.

”Rattata, use Bite!”

At Mo Ji’s command, the small purple mouse tensed its limbs and shot forward toward a half-meter-tall boulder.

”So fast…”

Anzi’s eyes lit up.

In the blink of an eye, Rattata reached the rock, leapt up, opened its mouth, and bit straight into the top.

Its sharp incisors pierced the stone like tofu, sinking effortlessly inside.

The next moment—

With a surge of force, cracks spread rapidly across the surface of the boulder.

Then, with a series of crisp cracking sounds, the half-meter rock shattered into pieces, scattering across the ground.

”So… so strong…”

Even though Anzi had often seen powerful Pokémon in Chen Mo’s livestreams—capable of changing the landscape with a single move—watching it through a screen was nothing compared to witnessing it in person.

He couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe.

No wonder Pokémon had initially been called ”magical beasts.” With power like this, who wouldn’t be afraid?

”Brother Mo Ji, your Rattata… it’s probably close to evolving, right?”

Anzi asked curiously.

Rattata was a common Pokémon, and Chen Mo had explained it long ago. Later, with the official documentary, it had become quite well-known.

If he remembered correctly, ordinary Rattata could bite through hard wood—but compared to the ones seen in Chen Mo’s streams, this one was clearly much stronger.

”I’m not sure either.”

Mo Ji smiled and shook his head.

”But when I took Rattata to the Bureau for testing recently, the researchers said its current stats are already very close to an evolved Raticate.”

”So that means it’ll evolve soon, right?”

Donggua looked excited.

”Maybe.”

Mo Ji didn’t elaborate, but the slight upward curve of his lips revealed his mood.

”Pula-da!~”

Having perfectly carried out its command, Rattata ran back, climbed onto Mo Ji’s shoulder, and chirped excitedly as if asking for praise.

”Alright, alright, I get it.”

Mo Ji rubbed its head, then took out a sugar cube from his pocket, unwrapped it, and handed it over.

”Pula-da~”

Catching the sweet scent, Rattata immediately grabbed the sugar cube with both paws and happily licked it.

Watching the trainer and Pokémon interact so warmly, Anzi and Donggua couldn’t help but feel a trace of envy.

Donggua patted Anzi’s shoulder and smiled.

”With my cousin’s Rattata this strong, you can relax now. It’ll definitely help you deal with that unknown Ghost-type Pokémon.”

”Yeah.”

Anzi nodded excitedly.

Hearing this, Mo Ji turned his head and said seriously,

”Rattata can handle Ghost-type Pokémon, but since we don’t know what we’re dealing with, we need to stay cautious. For now, investigation comes first.”

”And you both know that the team returning from Mount Zangqing is arriving today—Teacher Mo is among them. Once they’re back, even if there really is a Ghost-type Pokémon causing trouble, we won’t need to worry.”

Both Anzi and Donggua nodded repeatedly, finding his words reasonable.

Only then did Mo Ji smile again and ask,

”So, Anzi, can you tell me the specifics? For example, when and where did you first feel like something was following you?”

”The first time…”

As he listened, Mo Ji’s brows gradually furrowed.

Anzi first felt something following him about a week ago, one evening after picking up a package from a nearby courier station. On his way home, he suddenly sensed something trailing behind him.

But when he turned around—nothing.

At first, he dismissed it as his imagination.

However—

Anzi had a habit.

Being nocturnal, he often went downstairs at night to the supermarket—buying soda, bread, instant noodles, and the like.

And every time he walked from his building to the store, he felt something watching him from the darkness.

That feeling only disappeared once he entered the supermarket or stepped into the elevator.

”…And just last night, when I went down to buy cola like usual, I saw something—this black mass—standing in the alley next to the store. It scared me stiff. Luckily, I snapped out of it and ran before it could do anything… otherwise, who knows what would’ve happened.”

Even now, Anzi looked shaken.

Donggua couldn’t help but say,

”If you knew something’s been following you, why do you keep going out every day to buy snacks? Why not just stock up at home?”

”Uh…”

Anzi laughed awkwardly.

”Well… Brother Donggua, I feel like eating too much of that stuff isn’t healthy, so I only buy a little each time. But once I finish it… I end up craving more…”

”…”

Donggua shook his head.

”You’re hopeless.”

Just then—

A burst of noisy shouting caught their attention.

Turning around, they saw a large group of residents leaving the complex, shouting loudly as they marched in a certain direction.

”What’s going on?”

Donggua immediately grew alert.

”Oh, that.”

Anzi looked a bit helpless.

”Don’t worry—they’re not going to fight. It’s a protest.”

”A protest?”

Mo Ji looked puzzled.

Anzi explained quickly,

”There’s a large garbage processing plant nearby. Most of the time it’s fine, but in summer, this awful stench drifts over.”

”Now that it’s getting warmer, residents have started complaining in the group chat again. So this is the annual protest.”

”To be honest, if the agent had told me about this beforehand, I never would’ve rented here. Talk about bad luck…”

Donggua nodded.

”I see…”

Mo Ji added softly,

”I’ll look into it later and see if I can report it to higher authorities.”

”Thank you!”

Anzi’s eyes filled with gratitude.

Even if he stayed indoors most of the time, solving the odor issue would benefit everyone living here.

At that moment—

Watching the protest crowd, Anzi suddenly remembered something and slapped his hand.

”Wait! I just remembered!”

”What now?”

Donggua looked at him suspiciously.

But Anzi said excitedly,

”I joined them once—went to the garbage plant to protest. That was about a week ago… Now that I think about it, that’s exactly when I started feeling like something was watching me.”

”Huh?!”

Donggua’s face changed instantly.

”Damn it, why didn’t you say something this important earlier?!”

”I… I forgot…”

Donggua turned to Mo Ji.

”Bro, what do you think? Should we investigate the garbage plant?”

”We definitely should.”

Mo Ji glanced at the departing crowd.

”But no rush. Since whatever it is seems to act at night, evening would be the best time. For now, let’s thoroughly check the area around the complex.”

”Got it!”

The two nodded in unison.

From current research, Ghost-type Pokémon were indeed more active from dusk to late night, and their elusive nature made them hard to detect during the day.

So—

Mo Ji decided to focus their main investigation in the evening.

If Anzi wasn’t imagining things, then whatever was targeting him would surely appear during that time.

”Stay behind me and Rattata later. If anything feels off, stay sharp.”

As the sun gradually set—

Using his police credentials, Mo Ji led the group smoothly into the garbage processing plant.

Their objectives were simple:

First, confirm whether the Pokémon targeting Anzi truly existed.

Second, identify it for future action.

Although they didn’t plan to engage in direct combat, Mo Ji had already briefed Anzi and Donggua on precautions before entering.

”So smelly…”

Donggua frowned beneath his thick mask.

”Really? I think it’s fine—just a little smell.”

Anzi, also masked, seemed completely unfazed.

Donggua silently thought,

With how your place smells, you’re probably already desensitized…

Mo Ji said nothing, letting Rattata—whose sense of smell was especially sharp—conduct the search.

Watching Rattata endure the stench while continuing to work, Mo Ji couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for it.

They had been inside the garbage plant for nearly half an hour.

Aside from mountains of trash, they had found nothing unusual.

This made Mo Ji wonder—

Even for Ghost-type Pokémon, would they really choose to inhabit such a foul place?

”Pula-da!”

Suddenly, Rattata let out a strange cry.

Then it sprinted toward the corner of a garbage heap at high speed, before turning back to look at them urgently.

”Bro?!”

Donggua looked at Mo Ji.

Mo Ji nodded, his expression shifting.

”It seems like it found something. Let’s go take a look—and remember what I told you earlier.”

Soon—

Rattata stopped again, staring intently at a pile of garbage ahead.

”That is…”

Mo Ji, catching up, also saw it—

A bizarre creature crouched near the garbage heap, rummaging through it.

”What the hell is that…”

Donggua frowned.

The creature looked like a dark green bag stuffed with trash, tattered and worn. Its ”head” was tied at the top like a knot, and its arms were made of blue and pink scraps.

Combined with the surroundings, it looked like some kind of trash spirit born from the garbage itself.

”Is that a Ghost-type Pokémon?”

Donggua was confused.

He didn’t feel the eerie, sinister aura typical of Ghost-types from this seemingly weak creature.

Meanwhile, Mo Ji had already taken out his phone and opened the Pokédex, snapping a photo.

But in the next moment—

He noticed something wrong.

None of the Pokémon identified by the Pokédex matched the creature in front of them.

”A Pokémon… not recorded in the Pokédex?”

Recalling Chen Mo’s warning—if you encounter an unknown Pokémon, the first thing to do is run—Mo Ji felt the urge to retreat.

They had already gathered enough information for now.

However—

At that moment, the unknown Pokémon rummaging through the trash suddenly froze, as if sensing something.
