Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

[A Ghost-type Pokémon…]

The group chat suddenly fell silent.

They were all locals of Anping City. One of the main reasons they had chosen to stay after the new policy was introduced was because of Chen Mo’s livestreams.

Naturally, they were no strangers to Ghost-type Pokémon.

After all, Chen Mo himself had a Ghost-type gengar by his side.

However—

While gengar looked cute, with a kind of goofy charm, everyone knew—thanks to Chen Mo’s explanations—that most Ghost-type Pokémon were not something to be trifled with.

[Anzi, what did you do recently? How did you end up provoking a Ghost-type Pokémon?]

The bespectacled man known as ”Anzi” began hammering away at his keyboard.

[You guys know what I’m like. Ever since I quit my job, I’ve basically never gone out. With my personality, how could I possibly provoke a Ghost-type Pokémon?]

The chat went quiet for a moment.

[That’s true. Anzi’s practically become a shut-in—never leaves the house. There’s no way he’d run into Pokémon.]

[You might not go looking for Pokémon, but that doesn’t mean they won’t come looking for you. Just to be safe, I think you should call the police.]

[Call the police for what? Did you forget what my cousin does?]

[Oh right, yeah. For something this specialized, just get Donggua’s cousin.]

Seeing that message, Anzi’s eyes lit up.

Donggua was Anzi’s childhood friend. After retiring from the army a few years ago, he became an auxiliary police officer in Anping City. Due to limited qualifications, he hadn’t managed to become a full officer despite several attempts.

But compared to Donggua, his cousin was far more impressive.

A proper police academy graduate who passed the joint examination and was assigned to Anping City.

Recently, because of the Hongjingpo Forest Planning Zone, Donggua’s cousin—who had reportedly captured a Pokémon—had been assigned to work there.

That was a very promising position.

[My cousin’s off tomorrow. Anzi, I’ll bring him over to take a look and see if this is really caused by a Pokémon.]

[Alright! Thanks, Brother Donggua. I’ll treat you to a meal later.]

[Deal. It’s getting late—I can’t stay up anymore. Going to sleep.]

After replying, Anzi finally felt a bit calmer. He grabbed his soda and gulped down a few mouthfuls.

Then he glanced at the time displayed in the bottom-right corner of his computer.

”Only eleven? Donggua already can’t stay up? Sleeping that early—what a health nut.”

Shaking his head, Anzi picked up his phone, ordered some takeout, then opened a game, planning to relax a bit before bed.

…

The next morning.

A violent vibration jolted Anzi awake.

Eyes still closed, he reached out from under the blanket, fumbled around for a while, and finally grabbed the source of the vibration, dragging it under the covers.

”Hello…”

”Anzi, what are you doing? Get up and open the door! Your dad’s at the entrance of your complex—coming to save you!”

The familiar voice came from the other end.

Half-asleep, Anzi mumbled,

”Let… let me sleep five more minutes…”

”Sleep my ass. Like I don’t know you? I already called ahead. If I knock and no one opens, I’m taking my cousin and leaving.”

”Alright, alright, I got it…”

He hung up and checked the time.

9:08 AM.

It took about five minutes to get from the entrance to his door.

Yeah… I can sleep two more minutes.

…

Bang bang bang!

A loud knocking woke Anzi again.

The next second, he saw the missed calls on his phone and felt his heart drop.

Crap. Overslept.

He scrambled out of bed, skillfully dodged the clutter, and rushed to the door.

”Coming, coming!”

The moment he opened it—

Donggua stood outside in casual clothes, his face full of anger.

Before Donggua could speak, Anzi bowed deeply.

”My bad, Brother Donggua. I’ll treat you to two meals—no, three! Anywhere you want. Please cut me some slack—I didn’t sleep until five this morning. I’m really exhausted…”

”Five in the morning?”

Donggua frowned.

”What were you doing? Didn’t you quit your job? What’s keeping you busy till five?”

”…Gaming.”

Anzi scratched the back of his head, looking embarrassed.

”I thought I’d quit after one win, but I kept losing until five. My teammates were just terrible!”

”…”

Donggua was speechless.

Then, just as he was about to say something, he caught a whiff of something foul.

Looking at Anzi’s greasy, messy hair, he instinctively stepped back.

”How long has it been since you showered?”

”Seven days? No… almost half a month, I think…”

Anzi grew even more embarrassed.

But he still tried to justify himself.

”Come on, Brother Donggua, cut me some slack. I’ve quit my job, I don’t go out—why bother keeping clean?”

”The hell kind of logic is that?”

Donggua shook his head. He wanted to curse him out, but after a moment, he just said,

”Enough nonsense. Go take a shower. I’ll wait out here.”

”You’re not coming in?”

Anzi asked, puzzled.

Donggua glanced at the garbage-filled, chaotic room behind him and replied calmly,

”I’ll wait here.”

”Alright.”

Anzi nodded, then suddenly realized only Donggua was there.

”Where’s Brother Mo Ji?”

”You’ve got some nerve asking.”

Donggua rolled his eyes.

”You took forever to open the door, and didn’t answer your phone. My cousin already went downstairs—said he’d check out the surroundings.”

”…”

Anzi chuckled awkwardly and said nothing more.

Watching him turn around to shower, Donggua sighed helplessly.

”This guy…”

At that moment—

There was movement near the elevator at the corner.

Donggua turned his head.

A tall young man in a gray tracksuit, standing straight-backed, walked out of the elevator. On his shoulder sat a small, light-purple mouse.

”Bro, you’re back!”

Donggua’s face lit up with joy.

”Mm.”

The tall young man nodded with a smile.

”Your friend’s awake?”

”Yeah.”

Hearing that, the young man—Mo Ji—walked toward Anzi’s apartment.

However, as soon as he reached the door, his sensitive nose caught the strange smell wafting out.

Looking at the messy interior, he stopped in his tracks.

Even the little purple mouse on his shoulder showed a distinctly human-like expression of disgust.

”Your friend…”

Mo Ji frowned.

Donggua quickly smoothed things over.

”Well… there’s a reason. Try to understand.”

Lowering his voice as he listened to the sound of running water inside, Donggua explained:

”About a month ago, Anzi broke up with his girlfriend of seven or eight years over bride price issues. It hit him really hard. He quit his stable government job and locked himself at home. Unless it’s something important, he barely goes out. Over time, he became like this.”

”He’s actually a good guy—very loyal. Whenever any of us has trouble, he helps without hesitation. So this time, I want to help him too.”

After hearing this, Mo Ji didn’t say anything more, his expression thoughtful.

”By the way, did you notice anything unusual? Is it really a Ghost-type Pokémon like my friend suspects?”

Donggua asked curiously.

Mo Ji shook his head.

”No. I walked around the area and even checked that supermarket you mentioned. For now, I haven’t found anything unusual.”

”I’ve heard older folks say that people have ’three flames,’ and when someone’s in poor mental condition, those flames weaken. Could it be that a Ghost-type Pokémon took advantage of that and targeted Anzi?”

Donggua looked worried.

Mo Ji chuckled.

”What are you talking about? Some Ghost-type Pokémon do feed on human life force, but it doesn’t really have much to do with a person’s mental state.”

”And didn’t you say your friend hasn’t left this area in a long time? Honestly, I suspect that staying cooped up at home—combined with what happened before—has put him under a lot of stress, making him feel like he’s being watched.”

”Anyway, I already had Rattata thoroughly check the area. There’s nothing strange so far.”

”Of course, we still don’t fully understand Ghost-type Pokémon, so we shouldn’t jump to conclusions. Let’s talk to your friend after he comes out, then investigate further.”

Donggua sighed softly.

The group had already considered this possibility. Now even his ”professional” cousin was suspecting it might be a psychological issue…

What a troublesome guy.

Listening as the sound of running water gradually stopped, Donggua shook his head.

After a moment, he turned his curious gaze toward the Rattata on Mo Ji’s shoulder. Hesitating for a while, he finally asked expectantly:

”Bro… can I pet your Rattata?”

”Of course.”

Mo Ji smiled and nodded.

Donggua, who had always been fascinated by Pokémon but had never caught one, excitedly reached out and gently placed his hand on Rattata’s head.

Following Mo Ji’s command, Rattata didn’t resist. It even lifted its head and rubbed back against his hand.

”So well-behaved!”

Even as a grown man, Donggua nearly melted at the touch of the obedient little Pokémon.

Sigh…

If it weren’t for all the hassle of being an auxiliary officer, he would’ve already devoted himself to catching Pokémon.

After all—

Under Teacher Mo’s influence, who wouldn’t want a cute little Pokémon resting on their shoulder as they walked around?

”Bro, doesn’t calling it ’Rattata’ feel a bit distant?”

Donggua suddenly suggested.

”How about we give it a nickname?”

”No need.”

Mo Ji looked at Rattata, his expression gentle.

”Doesn’t Teacher Mo also call his Pokémon by their species names? I think it’s fine. Our bond is already strong enough, and I’m used to calling it Rattata.”

”Fair enough.”

Donggua didn’t press further.

After all, Rattata was his cousin’s Pokémon, not his.

Soon—

A freshly cleaned-up Anzi walked out. Spotting the tall young man beside Donggua, his eyes lit up, and he quickly greeted him.

”You must be Brother Mo Ji, right? Thanks for coming.”

”No problem.”

Mo Ji waved it off.

”It’s my duty as a police officer.”

”And this is…”

Anzi noticed the purple mouse on his shoulder.

”Rattata?”

Though he knew Donggua’s cousin had captured a Pokémon, he hadn’t known which one. Now that he saw it was Rattata, his expression subtly changed.

”Brother Mo Ji, isn’t Rattata a Normal-type Pokémon? I remember Teacher Mo explaining type matchups—Ghost-types are dangerous, so I paid special attention. Normal-types can’t deal with Ghost-types, right?”

”Rattata is indeed a Normal-type Pokémon.”

Mo Ji gently patted its head.

”But your understanding of type matchups isn’t quite right. While Normal-type moves don’t affect Ghost-types, the reverse is also true—Ghost-type moves don’t do much to Normal-types either.”

”Besides, just because it’s a Normal-type doesn’t mean Rattata only knows Normal-type moves. My Rattata knows Dark-type moves like Bite and Pursuit. Dark-type skills are very effective against Ghost-types.”

Realizing his mistake, Anzi looked embarrassed.

These days, he had spent most of his time gaming. After the breakup, he just wanted to pass time, and even his earlier enthusiasm for Pokémon had faded.

Still—

He remembered one thing.

Rattata was a very common Pokémon. Even if it had moves effective against Ghost-types, it probably wasn’t particularly strong.

Mo Ji saw through his thoughts but didn’t mind. He simply smiled.

”Do you have any scrap metal or broken items at home? I’d like my Rattata to demonstrate its moves for you.”

”I guarantee—it’ll surprise you.”
