Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

In the waiting area—

To ease the short-haired young man’s anxiety, Chen Mo kept chatting with him.

His name was A Yuan, a freelance illustrator. Long ago, after watching Chen Mo’s streams, he developed a strong interest in Pokémon.

At first, A Yuan only occasionally created fan art of Pokémon that appeared in Chen Mo’s livestreams.

Later—

As the new era began and his income increased, he decided to focus his work entirely on the many cute and diverse Pokémon.

And that was when—

He met Espurr.

”I was painting by Hongye Lake in Hongjingpo Forest when Xiao Miao suddenly appeared beside me… like an angel.”

As he recalled their first meeting, A Yuan finally showed a faint smile.

”I’m actually pretty timid. Even when I went into Hongjingpo Forest, I didn’t dare go deep—just stayed where there were more people. Hongye Lake was popular thanks to you, Teacher Mo, so it was considered safe.”

”But that day, there was almost no one around… I got nervous.”

”Then a Magikarp jumping out of the lake caught my attention…”

Thinking ”I can’t just run away now or my friends will laugh at me,” A Yuan set up his tablet and stool and began working.

Once he focused, he became completely absorbed—

Not noticing that a small Pokémon had quietly approached, drawn by his concentration.

”When I finished the first stage and turned around, Xiao Miao was suddenly there—I got so startled I threw my tablet!”

A Yuan’s smile widened.

”Luckily, Xiao Miao used its psychic power to catch it before it fell into the lake.”

”To me… it was like an angel.”

After that—

A Yuan often returned to Hongye Lake.

He didn’t see Espurr every time, but he discovered two patterns:

Espurr only appeared when few people were aroundEspurr was fascinated by him while he was drawing

With that, their bond grew quickly.

Recently—

A Yuan had successfully captured Espurr and brought it back to the city.

”…An angel, huh.”

Even just listening, Chen Mo could feel how deeply A Yuan cared for it.

The chat was filled with reactions:

[Hope Espurr recovers safely!]

[Trust the Medical Center—they’ll save it!]

[Wait, I thought Hongye Lake only had Magikarp??]

[Psychic-types are rare—this guy is lucky.]

[Some people just have insane luck…]

—

The treatment room door opened.

Elder Zheng walked out, now in green scrubs, looking slightly worn.

A Yuan immediately tensed.

Chen Mo patted his shoulder and asked:

”How is it?”

Zheng smiled.

”The treatment was successful. Espurr is stable now.”

A Yuan froze—

Then tears welled up.

”Thank you… thank you so much…”

Chen Mo quietly watched.

But then—

Zheng’s expression turned serious.

”A Yuan, there’s something you need to know.”

A Yuan stiffened.

”…Please tell me.”

”Relax. During treatment, we discovered something.”

”Espurr’s condition was caused by it forcefully suppressing its psychic power. This led to instability and eventually loss of control.”

”We released that energy this time—but it may happen again.”

—

The chat quickly connected the dots.

Espurr was a special Psychic-type Pokémon.

It naturally possessed immense psychic power—but couldn’t fully control it.

So—

It suppressed that power using its ears and emotions.

But this came at a cost.

Living like that… was painful.

[So it pushed itself too far…]

[This isn’t the right way to train it…]

[Why would it do this…?]

—

Chen Mo looked at A Yuan—

At his bandaged leg, his injuries.

”…A Yuan, you should explain how you got hurt.”

A Yuan clenched his fists.

”…You noticed.”

Chen Mo nodded slightly.

He had experienced something similar—

Back when Pichu couldn’t control its electricity.

Meanwhile, the chat finally realized:

[Wait… his injuries were caused by Espurr?!]

[That’s dangerous…]

[Then don’t raise one??]

[No—just choose safer Pokémon if you’re worried.]

But others saw something else:

[They really care about each other…]

—

”A week ago, I painted this.”

A Yuan showed his phone.

On it—

A picture of Espurr with white wings, gently descending to give flowers to a battered young man.

”Every time it saw itself in my drawings, it got really happy.”

”This time too… it jumped into my arms.”

”But then…”

”It lost control.”

”The psychic energy surged—far beyond what it could handle.”

”And I was too close…”

He looked at his cast.

”…That’s when everything changed.”

”After that, it kept its distance. No more contact. Always tense.”

”I know… it’s afraid of hurting me.”

”But I failed as a trainer… I didn’t notice what it was going through…”

Chen Mo said nothing.

Sometimes—

People just need to be heard.

—

At that moment—

”Director Zheng, Espurr is awake.”

A nurse called out.

Soon—

Espurr was wheeled out.

A Yuan rushed forward in his wheelchair, Chen Mo helping him.

”Meow-pa…”

Surrounded by strangers, Espurr looked nervous, scanning for A Yuan.

When it saw him—

It relaxed.

But then—

It noticed his injured leg.

Its expression dimmed.

It turned its head away.

”Meow-pa!”

”Pika pika!”

Pikachu translated.

Chen Mo frowned.

”Espurr… wants to leave? Go back to the forest?”

Pikachu nodded.

Even without translation—

A Yuan understood.

He smiled gently.

Reaching out, he stroked Espurr’s head.

”Didn’t we promise to stay together?”

”So, Xiao Miao—”

”I will never give up on you.”

”Never.”
