Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

”No, I still want to be a soldier under Commander Lin!”

Tang Haofei, his vision blurred, gazed into the darkness at Xie Yan’s determined eyes. After a moment, he shook his head.

”Serving under Lin Haifeng is exhausting...”

”Serving under Commander Lin, one doesn’t fear exhaustion...”

...

KNOCK. KNOCK KNOCK.

Clear knocking sounded, followed by the creak of the door opening.

”Wen Yu, are you okay?”

Yang Hong looked at the three soul pets frolicking in the room, then at Wen Yu, who was sitting in front of the TV watching a show. He couldn’t help but ask.

”How did you figure out something was wrong with me?” Wen Yu retorted without turning his head.

Yang Hong hesitated for a long time.

”It’s just, with all these things happening, I thought you might do something impulsive...”

Hearing Yang Hong’s words, Wen Yu chuckled. ”In your eyes, am I that temperamental?”

You’re not just temperamental; with your personality, who knows what you’d do. Yang Hong grumbled silently.

However, Wen Yu didn’t lose his temper this time, which Yang Hong found strange.

Perhaps noticing Yang Hong’s confusion, Wen Yu asked, ”Is there any point?”

”What?”

”I mean, if I had immediately unleashed my fury on the Yanjing Assembly Site after sending Qin Tian away, would there have been any point?”

”No, but it might have made you feel a bit better.”

”No, I feel perfectly fine right now. Do you know why?”

Yang Hong shook his head in silence.

”Because I’ve finally understood the essence of everything.”

”I came to the Yanjing Assembly Site because it was safe and because Tang Haofei was here.”

”Ultimately, it was because I trusted Tang Haofei and the unstable alliance I’d formed with him.”

”But reality slapped me hard in the face.”

”Tang Haofei isn’t trustworthy...”

”You might not know this, but Tang Haofei and I share something—a huge secret only we two know. But even in this situation, Tang Haofei isn’t trustworthy. Who else can I trust?”

Yang Hong was speechless.

”I don’t trust anyone. It turns out, from beginning to end, the only person I could ever truly trust was myself.”

Wen Yu abruptly sat up.

”Yang Hong, you know, I’ve just realized something.”

”I was stuck in a strange loop recently.”

”I thought that when individual strength hit a bottleneck, perhaps external forces could provide a good supplement, like with Lin Haifeng.”

”But I was wrong. I don’t have Lin Haifeng’s abilities.”

”I’m not a leader, am I?”

Looking into Wen Yu’s clear eyes, Yang Hong hesitated for a moment before gently nodding. Wen Yu isn’t cut out to be a leader; he’s simply not qualified!

”I founded the Independents Mutual Aid Society and established our little group. But all along, I’ve just been playing to my weaknesses. The returns are too low! If I had used that time to drastically increase my own strength, can you even imagine how powerful I’d be now? I might be so strong that Lin Haifeng wouldn’t even dare to think of messing with me!”

”The root of all these problems is simply that my strength is insufficient...”

Yang Hong was taken aback, realizing what Wen Yu was about to say.

”From now on, the Independents Mutual Aid Society is yours. Your leadership skills are better than mine, and you’re plenty strong. Do whatever you want with it. I’m a bit tired.”

”What about us?”

”Our little group is officially disbanded. But we’re still friends, right?”

Hearing Wen Yu say this, Yang Hong immediately smiled. ”Yes! We’re still friends!”

Being friends with Wen Yu is way better than being his subordinate...

...

After a while, when Yang Hong left, he relayed a message to Wen Yu.

The alliance ceremony between the Human Race and the Sea Tribes Alliance is set to restart in three days.

This coincided perfectly with when Wen Yu planned to leave.

Thinking about this, Wen Yu didn’t feel any urge to leave earlier.

After everything that had happened, Wen Yu had learned one thing: go with the flow.

The human heart is unfathomable, making people’s actions impossible to predict. Since you can’t guess, don’t even try. Just let things happen as they will.

For Wen Yu, it was simply a matter of dealing with problems as they arose.

Since the timing happened to coincide, why not stay and see what happened? What difference would it make?

...

As it turned out, staying for three days didn’t really change anything.

With the Sea King control plan already successful, if Lin Haifeng wanted the alliance ceremony to proceed smoothly, then it undoubtedly would.

Besides, in the current situation, Lin Haifeng no longer needed to resort to any schemes.

「Three days passed in a flash.」

...

Early the next morning, Wen Yu packed his belongings, stowing them all in his space ring.

Then, he recalled his three soul pets, still dozing nearby, into the Soul Realm space.

Dressed in a black robe that completely concealed him, Wen Yu then casually walked out of the room.

When he came downstairs, Yang Hong and Wang Fucai were already waiting for him at the main entrance.

”Ready to go?”

”Mm.”

”Will you come back?”

Wen Yu shook his head, then nodded. ”If you ever need my help, I might come back.”

Wang Fucai chuckled. ”The time we’d need your help is probably when we should be making a run for it.”

What he said was true. Generally, Yang Hong and Wang Fucai wouldn’t need Wen Yu’s help in the Yanjing Assembly Site. The only time they would need him would be during a major crisis—the life-or-death kind.
