Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Qin Tian connected with Wen Yu, not to bid farewell. This was merely a precaution—Qin Tian was afraid. He was afraid that Tang Haofei would not return his sister, and even more afraid that Tang Haofei might have him killed to ”give the Sea Clan an explanation.”

But fear was of no use.

In fact, Qin Tian was still under Lin Haifeng’s control. What was the worth of completed missions when the leverage was still in someone else’s hands?

However, it turned out that while Lin Haifeng might not be very reliable, Tang Haofei’s promise was quite dependable.

The first person Qin Tian encountered was not Wen Yu, but Tang Haofei.

”Brother!”

Qin Shiyuan threw herself into Qin Tian’s arms, tears streaming down her face, like a young swallow returning to its nest.

Qin Shiyuan probably understood by now just how much trouble she had caused Qin Tian.

”Alright, alright.”

Qin Tian comforted his sister while looking at Tang Haofei and Arthur up ahead.

Shadow had disappeared the moment he heard Tang Haofei’s footsteps.

”I’ve brought her to you, and I’ve cleared away anything she had on her.”

”Thank you for this.”

Tang Haofei thanked Qin Tian, who accepted the thanks expressionlessly.

Tang Haofei, indeed, should thank Qin Tian!

”Is that everything? If there’s nothing else, we’ll get going.”

Tang Haofei nodded. ”The escape route has been arranged for you. The Sea Clan shouldn’t be able to react so quickly. There will definitely be a warrant out for you, but if you’re careful, it won’t be a major issue. From here on, it’s up to you.”

Qin Tian nodded, indicating he understood.

”Let’s go. Follow me.”

Tang Haofei waved his hand and led the way in another direction.

The dimly lit sewer led to an unknown destination.

Led by Tang Haofei, Qin Tian, Qin Shiyuan, and Arthur followed closely behind him.

After a while, a light suddenly appeared ahead.

As the light grew brighter, Tang Haofei abruptly stopped.

Ahead, at the sewer exit, besides the military vehicles that had been arranged, stood another person: Wen Yu.

Looking at the figures before him, Wen Yu pondered for a long time.

Yet, he still didn’t know what expression to make, whether towards Tang Haofei or Qin Tian.

After a moment, Wen Yu spoke calmly.

”Did the plan succeed?”

Tang Haofei nodded.

”Smoothly, right?”

”No hiccups.”

Then, silence.

”Why are you here?” Tang Haofei asked.

Hearing Tang Haofei’s words, Wen Yu glanced at Qin Tian and then at Qin Shiyuan behind him, who appeared unharmed on the surface.

”I came merely to see if you’ve all kept your promise, and incidentally, to escort them safely out of the Yanjing Assembly Site.”

After hearing this, a wry smile suddenly appeared on Tang Haofei’s face.

”I do what I say I’ll do. But I know you don’t believe that anymore.”

”That doesn’t matter anymore!”

”Yes, it doesn’t matter anymore...”

Trust between people is, in fact, built upon a foundation.

After everything that had happened, the likelihood of Wen Yu and Tang Haofei having a complete falling out was small, but the foundation of trust between them no longer existed.

As for the fact that both of them were reborners...

That couldn’t be called a basis for trust; it wasn’t uncommon for enemies to hold leverage over each other without exposing it.

Their current relationship couldn’t be called friendship, but neither could it be described as enmity.

Perhaps ”familiar strangers with common ground” was a more fitting description.

”That vehicle over there is the escape route arranged for you. It will take you out of Yanjing. The rest will be up to you.”

Qin Tian nodded, then led Qin Shiyuan and Arthur toward the military vehicle. Wen Yu glanced at the military vehicle waiting for him, then turned back to look at Tang Haofei.

After a long moment, a feeling that was neither quite anger nor frustration welled up in him. Wen Yu finally couldn’t hold back and asked Tang Haofei in a calm voice, ”Why? I thought you wouldn’t act. Even if you did nothing, it would have been better than colluding with Lin Haifeng!”

Hearing Wen Yu’s question, Tang Haofei shook his head and suddenly changed the subject.

”Wen Yu, do you remember what I said to you some time ago, when we were annihilating the Demon Tribe outside the city?

”Let me say it again...

”The title ’Sequence Number 1’ is not a basis for my arrogance or capital to show off; it is a responsibility and an obligation.

”I have an obligation to ensure that humans, Earth, and even all living beings on Earth survive. This is a mission!

”For this mission, I can sacrifice anything!

”Even if it means doing things I am unwilling to do!”

”You don’t have to do this! You’re so powerful, you absolutely don’t need to be manipulated by any threats. You can do whatever you want with your strength!”

Hearing Wen Yu’s words, Tang Haofei’s expression remained unchanged. Instead, he asked directly, ”And then what?

”I use my strength to do whatever I want, and then what?

”Do you know, Wen Yu, in my previous life, I had no enemies, no rivals. In the later stages, no being could defeat me, or even harm me. I had the most steadfast supporters and the most powerful armed group! In my previous life, I was far more formidable than you are now! I was the perfect template of a protagonist from those pre-apocalypse novels! And then what?

”Then I died, and everyone around me died! In just ten years, they were all completely wiped out!

”In this life, I could, of course, do that. Form the Ultimate Force Team, further perfect my skill combinations, kill Lin Haifeng if I find him disagreeable, and even slaughter the entire Yanjing!

”And then what?

”Still, nothing would change; it would be exactly like my previous life. Earth would still be destroyed! What use is my individual strength? I am just one person; I only have two hands and two feet! Do you think that’s the purpose some unknown entity had for my rebirth?

”I am Sequence Number 1! My strength is great, that’s true.

”But strength is not my license to do as I please.

”I also have all sorts of apprehensions and worries, and I also have things I absolutely must do.”

”Like this time?”

”Just like this time!”

”I understand...”

Wen Yu nodded, no longer paying Tang Haofei any mind where he stood, and turned to board the military vehicle.

Wen Yu could understand Tang Haofei’s thoughts and considerations, but understanding, in itself, still couldn’t solve any problems.

Wen Yu suddenly recalled Lin Haifeng’s earlier words about ”different paths”...

It turned out that the ones truly on different paths were himself and Tang Haofei.
