Chapter 554: Chapter 42: Kai

Inside the cave.

Aside from the eye-contact exchange between Bubu Wang and Hidan, the cave was deathly silent.

The two goofs started playing rock-paper-scissors, and whoever lost slapped themselves.

From the furious look in Hidan’s eyes, it’s clear he has slapped himself quite a few times.

Bubu Wang looked smug, who knows how it managed to form scissors with its paws, maybe Hidan couldn’t figure it out either, so he threw paper twice.

Kisame’s mouth twitched violently, and Deidara was intrigued by the man and dog duo, seeming eager to join, as standing around doing nothing was indeed boring.

Heavenly Dao glared at Hidan three times, but Hidan pretended not to notice, continuing to play happily with Bubu Wang, while Konan looked exasperated.

Kakuza glanced at Hidan disdainfully, then turned away, seemingly embarrassed to have a teammate being taunted by a dog. His green eyes expressed the modern sentiment: ’Hidan, you’re embarrassing, just quit the group.’

”Hey you, are you cheating or what.”

After several slaps, Hidan couldn’t help but voice his suspicion, and Bubu Wang gave him a look of canine contempt.

”Shut up.”

Heavenly Dao spoke, and Hidan sulkily closed his mouth.

Su Xiao felt that the Akatsuki’s vibe was a bit off, all because of Bubu Wang’s addition.

With this entertaining man and dog, the cave wasn’t too boring; Heavenly Dao didn’t say much else.

Two days and nights passed like this, and by the third day, everyone in the cave was sore. Su Xiao sat on a giant rock, basically doing nothing important; his ring was the crucial element.

He tossed a hamburger to Deidara and took out some skewers to fill his stomach.

”I’m going to grab something to eat too.”

Kisame said, the words under his feet dimming slightly.

”Wait.”

Jue suddenly spoke; he hadn’t said much in the past three days.

”What is it.”

Heavenly Dao opened his eyes and instinctively glanced at Bubu Wang, who was already asleep with drool hanging out. Its 45 charm attributes weren’t just for show; if not for that incredible charm, Bubu Wang would have been kicked out of the cave, even with Su Xiao vouching for him.

”There are enemies pursuing us in the Country of Rivers.”

The Country of Rivers in Jue’s words is just another name for the River Country, a name it was called 300 years ago.

”How many.”

Heavenly Dao wasn’t surprised; having sealed the One Tail in the River Country, he was ready for the pursuit from the Sand Ninja Village.

The River Country is situated between the Country of Fire and the Wind Country, with the Land of Rain above and an ocean below.

Sealing the One Tail couldn’t happen in the Land of Rain; that’s home base. The Country of Fire was out of the question as it’s Konoha territory, and the Wind Country was too bold, so the only choice was the River Country.

”One, two...”

Jue closed his eyes to sense, then spoke:

”There are four in total. If our information is correct, this is a Jonin squad, led by Might Kai, a Konoha ninja.”

”Who is he?”

Heavenly Dao clearly hadn’t heard of this person, and since the enemies were from Konoha, Heavenly Dao naturally looked at Itachi.

”Konoha Jonin, specializes in Taijutsu, incredibly strong, best not to underestimate him.”

”Oh~ it’s that rare beast.”

Kisame said, having faced Kai before.

No one spoke further, waiting for Heavenly Dao’s order.

”Use that technique. Although it’s still in the experimental stage, it should be effective.”

Heavenly Dao indicated not using the main body, but a special way to face the enemy.

”I’ll go.”

Hidan said, having pent-up frustration.

”Let me handle it, I have a personal grudge with that guy.”

Kisame also said.

”That technique consumes a lot of Chakra. Kisame is more suited for it, though it will still use up 30% of his Chakra.”

Heavenly Dao sent Kisame to face the enemy, and the cave fell silent again.

But not ten minutes later, Jue’s eyes suddenly opened again.

”Another batch has arrived, also Konoha’s.”

Jue looked at Deidara.

”Where did you capture the One Tail, in Konoha?”

”The Sand Ninja Village, how could the One Tail go to Konoha.”

Deidara was also puzzled. They captured the One Tail in the Sand Ninja Village; who would have thought all the pursuers would be Konoha ninjas.

”This is normal. The Sand Ninja Village sent many people, and suffered heavy casualties.”

Sasori must have eliminated a lot of Sand Ninja when he covered the retreat; otherwise, he wouldn’t have said that.

”Deidara, Bai Ye, this operation to capture the tailed beast caused quite a stir, especially you Deidara. You dropped a bomb in the Sand Ninja Village before retreating, didn’t you.”

With enemies arriving one after another, Heavenly Dao seemed a bit dissatisfied.

”This Jinchuriki was a bit strong, hm.”

Deidara looked a bit unhappy.

”That’s why I told you from the start, your skills aren’t suited for stealth. If Bai Ye hadn’t covered you, you would have been exposed when clearing the outpost.”

Sasori also seemed displeased with Deidara’s decision to drop a bomb before leaving.

”Heh~ to be fair, Sasori’s mechanisms are quite over-the-top too.”

Deidara wasn’t a pushover either. Catching onto Sasori’s sarcastic tone, he sarcastically shot back.

”What did you say.”

”Hm?”

Sasori and Deidara locked eyes.

”Stop the infighting!”

Heavenly Dao gave a low shout. This kind of banter was usual for the Akatsuki; the others were unfazed.

”Who’s going this time.”

Heavenly Dao looked around as he spoke.

”I’ll go.”

Hidan volunteered, eager to pass the time and vent his frustration.

A pair of blood-red eyes looked at Hidan, who seemed puzzled.

”This time, it’s Konoha ninja again. I’ll go.”

Itachi said, and Hidan snorted but said nothing more.

”Then it’s decided.”

Heavenly Dao assigned Itachi to intercept Konoha’s second wave of pursuers.

”You guys sure are diligent.”

Su Xiao chimed in; both tasks of intercepting the pursuers were taken on by Itachi’s team. It was normal for Kisame to go, but Itachi taking the field had to be fishy. Itachi’s health was deteriorating; his eyes weren’t something he would easily use.

”Just doing my duty, I understand Konoha’s ninja better.”

As he spoke, Itachi formed seals with his hands, entering a temporary body.

Su Xiao smiled and said no more; Itachi’s body might not hold up much longer, and he wasn’t hiding his purpose much anymore.

With Itachi and Kisame heading out to face their opponents, the cave fell quiet once more.

An hour later, Kisame was the first to regain consciousness.

”Lost?”

It was no surprise Kisame was defeated; using that body to fight could only achieve about 50% of his real power.

”Lost. If it had been the real body...”

Kisame seemed a bit upset, defeated twice by the same person, though this time he was only meant to delay them.

Su Xiao glanced at Kisame, his look clearly saying that if it had been his real body against Kai, he might have been dead already.

If Might Kai opened the Eight Gates, he’d be completely out of their league; kicking six Pains flying with one kick isn’t an exaggeration, though he’d die afterward.

There’s no doubt Might Kai is incredibly powerful. Su Xiao didn’t want to fight someone who could explode at any moment. Not even considering him opening the Eight Gates, he wasn’t sure he’d survive against the Seven Gates, but given that Su Xiao had an edge over someone like Kai in close combat, even if Kai kicked Su Xiao to death, Kai himself wouldn’t fare well, losing limbs would be inevitable.

Might Kai is truly a formidable ninja in the ninja world; others relied on bloodlines or family secret techniques, but Kai was different. He had no bloodline, no secret techniques, and not even ninjutsu, but from a young age, he trained ceaselessly, never stopping to this day.

Early on, Kai didn’t receive much attention, until he nearly kicked the saga to an end by opening the Eight Gates.
