System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

The emergency operating room is located in the emergency department. The changing room is cramped and narrow, and there aren’t many wardrobes for spare clothes; the men’s changing room only has three rows and two aisles.

Lu Cheng and Dai Linfang had no choice but to face each other shirtless while a middle-aged man nearing sixty watched them openly.

A more accurate description would be that after Lu Cheng called Director Wu Xiang, Director Wu came down from the operating room of the surgical building to block them in the emergency operating room’s changing room.

After Lu Cheng greeted Director Wu, he also sized him up—wearing a disposable surgical cap and having just removed a disposable surgical mask.

Wrinkles like rivers furrowed his forehead, crow’s feet etched deeply; his eyes were clouded. His nose was standard, and his face was slightly thin, making his cheekbones protrude distinctly, with sharp edges.

Wu Xiang stood with his arms crossed, contrary to his somewhat thin face. His long-time hammering in trauma surgery had made his limbs muscular, and his pectoral muscles appeared robust, incongruous with his age.

Wu Xiang’s beard was neatly trimmed, with only short white stubble moving up and down as he spoke, ”Young man, must you disturb this old man’s rare peace?”

Wu Xiang did not blame Lu Cheng for boasting, nor did he pursue whether Lu Cheng was lying to him, seeking the ’crematory’ kind of regret.

After Lu Cheng’s name became known at Yuzhou Hospital, Wu Xiang specifically inquired whether he could bring him to the trauma surgery department.

After all, to Yuzhou People’s Hospital’s general surgery department, that spleen repair surgery was an over-limit project for the hospital.

Lu Cheng could lead that surgery for the first time, and once there was a second time, it wouldn’t seem so awkward.

Getting the first time is always the hardest.

Dai Linfang turned his back to the two, his ears perked up.

He didn’t love watching drama, but that didn’t mean he would actively retreat from real-life regretful scenes like those in TV dramas.

Lu Cheng once approached, but Wu Xiang rejected him. Now, Lu Cheng has returned to Xiangzhou People’s Hospital, wielding the ”young and promising,” ”genius” aura, raising the big hammer.

This scenario strongly resembled the TV drama’s ”thirty years east of the river, thirty years west of the river” trope.

Of course, Dai Linfang had seen more cases where 99.9% of people always stayed on the west side of the river, never crossing to the east...

”Director Wu, you overstate it; now, aren’t you still my leader?”

”Director Wu, you don’t seem to be someone with prejudices based on one glance.” Lu Cheng responded with a polite smile.

Wu Xiang shrugged his arm, speaking calmly, ”If I say I’m such a person, would you go with me?”

Wu Xiang’s unconventional approach didn’t exceed Lu Cheng’s understanding range: ”Director Wu, I’m currently treading a narrow path, not conveniently seeking your protection.”

Lu Cheng’s ambition to be promoted was no secret to Wu Xiang, as people’s actions always have intentions.

By proper channels, Wu Xiang could only use his connections to suppress rumors. If it had been chosen earlier, it naturally took the initiative; now, Lu Cheng has already paved a path with his powerful capability.

Enhancing an already beautiful scene is far less valuable than helping in times of need.

What Wu Xiang wanted to do had already been paved to Lu Cheng’s feet by Huang Haibo from the emergency department.

Wu Xiang didn’t reply further, and the three headed straight to the operating room.

...

The patient was already anesthetized; she only had damage to her foot, so spinal anesthesia was chosen.

Lu Cheng was responsible for disinfection, Dai Linfang for lifting the leg, during which she remained conscious, pleading softly, ”Director Wu, does this leg really need to be amputated? Is there any possibility to avoid amputation?”

”You are a top expert, could you help me?”

After Director Wu arrived, the anesthesiologist promptly explained his identity to her, reanimating her hopes that had already died.

Being a chief physician, director of the State People’s Hospital, just this identity alone is the medical resource ceiling most people can quickly access.

Wu Xiang sighed helplessly, ”Even top experts are human; if I were run over by a large vehicle like you, I’d have to lie down too.”

”Every field has its specialties; you can’t force others, and I can’t force myself.”

”As with most people in society, if you grab anyone and demand a million in annual salary, they’d argue with you.”

”It’s not that we don’t want to; it’s truly unattainable...”

Wu Xiang’s words were straightforward and easy to understand, causing the woman to sob again: ”Director Wu, is there really no way at all?”

”Please, I beg you,” the woman spoke pathetically.

Approaching sixty, Wu Xiang had dealt with thousands of amputation patients. At this stage, every patient sincerely hoped for compassion and salvation.

Their devotion was definitely not inferior to this one’s.

Having encountered similar cases repeatedly, Wu Xiang’s heart was as calm as an ancient well: ”We must respect reality to respect ourselves.”

”If no amputation is done, it could endanger your life. In my many years of practice, though rare, there were some patients who were adamant about refusing amputation and were eventually unsaveable.”

”In time you’ll see, the possibility of amputation is pretty high.”

The woman sniffed loudly, emitting intermittent hums, and Wu Xiang’s words made her even more fearful.

She dared not doubt that what Director Wu said was true.

In society, encountering a dead person is rare, but if you have such a penchant, stay by the hospital’s operating room and ICU entrance, you’ll see more than enough, to your satisfaction.

In today’s society, most people ”die” in the hospital or have their death pronounced.

Silence is predominant in the emergency operating room; the further the surgery goes to extremes, the quieter the operating room becomes.
