”Lu Cheng, why are you daydreaming? What do you want to eat for lunch?” Chen Fang from the day shift walked into the emergency department.

”I sent you a message on WeChat, but you didn’t reply.”

Chen Fang is tall and slim, wearing glasses, with a literary hairstyle.

Chen Fang is three months older than Lu Cheng, the only person in the emergency surgery department close to Lu Cheng’s age.

Lu Cheng gradually dazed: ”I ordered with Brother Dai, forgot to tell you.”

”Is there nothing happening in the ward?”

Chen Fang nodded: ”Everything is stable, I just completed a few medical records.”

”Lu Cheng, Director Tian asked me to shadow you next month, Director Zhu also has the same intention.”

Chen Fang’s expression is cautious: ”But I’m afraid I’m not competent enough, can’t handle it.”

A few people from emergency surgery going to the trauma center, Lu Cheng was the first one planned, Dai Linfang volunteered, and the other four include one newly hired in-system staff, two hired by the hospital, and one labor-dispatched.

There is one remaining spot for an old staff member of the hospital, for which Chen Fang is most likely.

”No worries, the hospital chose young people to go to the trauma center this time, so they’re allowing us to focus on development without too much pressure.”

”In the beginning, we’ll only be dealing with primary cases.”

”Plus, Professor Qu and Professor Dong are there.” Lu Cheng doesn’t care who comes to the trauma center, nor did he expect emergency surgery to send over experienced people.

With Chen Fang being close to his age, it would be easier to coordinate when the time comes.

Chen Fang is also hesitant, on one hand, he hopes to upgrade his title through this hospital-supported trauma center project, but on the other hand, he worries that if the trauma center doesn’t take off, he’ll have to start over, wasting time.

This time, no senior attending physicians went to the trauma center, leaving Lu Cheng and himself as the senior attending physicians.

”Though Professor Qu and Professor Dong are present, they won’t be around twenty-four-seven; we’re largely the ones handling the patients,” Chen Fang says.

”Currently, our emergency room is essentially a variant of the trauma center…me.”

Lu Cheng reassures: ”The cases in the emergency room are quite complex; regardless of whether it’s trauma, if it’s related to surgery, it’ll enter the emergency room.”

”The trauma center is different, essentially partitioning off a portion of the cases, making it even lighter than the emergency room.”

Chen Fang nods slowly, suddenly changing the topic: ”Lu Cheng, you guys ordered food, right?”

”If not, I can make a call, it’ll be delivered quickly.”

”It’s already ordered.” Lu Cheng replies.

Suddenly, Chen Fang’s phone rings: ”Dr. Chen, bed 6 here suddenly wants to discharge; can you come take a look?”

Chen Fang gets up and walks out: ”Okay, I’ll be right there. Lu Cheng, I’ll head over.”

”No problem, go ahead and do your thing...” Lu Cheng sits in the emergency room, waiting as fate decides.

After Chen Fang leaves the rest area, Lu Cheng continues studying the printed materials from other hospitals on establishing trauma centers, gaining insights and lessons.

At one o’clock in the afternoon, the lunch boxes arrive at the emergency department, and Dai Linfang carries them to the doctor’s lounge in the surgical ward.

Not seeing Lu Cheng, Chen Fang asked: ”Brother Dai, where’s Lu Cheng?”

”Brother Lu went to the operating room; an upper abdominal injury just came in, and Brother Lu called Professor Qu into the OR.”

”They probably won’t take long to return.” Dai Linfang says.

”Aren’t you going, Brother Dai?” Chen Fang chuckles awkwardly as he unpacks the lunch boxes.

Dai Linfang: ”This case is relatively straightforward; Lu Cheng plans to perform a laparoscopic splenectomy.”

Chen Fang’s smile stiffens: ”Isn’t Lu Cheng capable of doing a Spleen Preservation Surgery?”

Lu Cheng wouldn’t cut a spleen that could be preserved, just to practice laparoscopy, would he?

Dai Linfang exhales deeply: ”The patient is a beauty-loving girl, insisting on minimal scars, demanding non-invasive techniques, and opting for no spleen.”

”Her attitude is very strong, personality quite unique, not worth arguing over.”

”Spleen Preservation Surgery isn’t a mandatory requirement of our hospital, so we have to respect others’ fate.”

Chen Fang secretly breathes a sigh of relief, almost believing Lu Cheng’s character had collapsed: ”I wonder what she’s thinking, choosing fewer scars over organs...”

Dai Linfang remarks: ”It’s good, saves time, effort, even saves on insurance costs.”

Yet, after saying this, Dai Linfang furrows his brow again.

”Just afraid of one thing, will Lu Cheng forcibly perform laparoscopic Spleen Preservation Surgery during the operation.”

Chen Fang is taken aback: ”Lu Cheng isn’t such a reckless person, is he?”

Laparoscopic Spleen Preservation Surgery can be seen as laparoscopic spleen repair surgery, traditionally only applicable to small, regular wounds caused by sharp objects.

If it’s a contusion with laceration injuries, the maximum repair can only be done through open surgery. If laparoscopic techniques are forced, it will certainly lead to deformed operations, greatly increasing the patient’s mortality rate. Nationwide, there are very few daring to do splenic rupture repair surgery under laparoscopy.

”It’s all speculation, mainly because when discussing the surgery, the family wasn’t present, and the patient is relatively young, only in their teens.”

”Their personality is not yet mature.”
