System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

At around eight or nine in the evening, the shadows outside the window swayed gently in the tranquil night. The emergency department was still bustling with people.

Lu Cheng intentionally walked two rounds from the trauma center towards the original direction of the emergency surgery department, and felt at ease seeing the colleagues from the emergency surgery department also treating trauma patients.

The hospital leadership, and the director of the original emergency department, Huang Haibo, as well as Director Tian Zhiliang of the emergency surgery department, were all considerate and did not arbitrarily impose burdens on the trauma center when it opened.

Instead, they did what they could to accommodate us, allowing us to catch our breath and gradually get into rhythm.

Doctors from both internal medicine and surgery came to the emergency department for consultations ceaselessly, their steps hurried.

In contrast, the trauma center turned out to be the more relaxed among all.

Even though it was idle, Lu Cheng did not proactively ask for some cases, preferring to slowly push the development of the trauma center, gradually perfecting its exclusive disease types, which was what Lu was happy to see.

After a round, when he returned to his post, Dai Linfang and Liu Nongqiu were already snoring.

The difference was that Dai Linfang slept in the rest room, while Liu Nongqiu was asleep on a chair, ready to attend to patients.

When Lu Cheng was younger, he had also sat in Liu Nongqiu’s place, thus he didn’t fuss over it, and after opening the door, lay down on the upper bunk of the two men’s bed.

He didn’t expect to sleep all night; being able to nap for a while was good enough.

Throughout the night, with frequent interruptions, Lu Cheng’s sleep was naturally not as deep as it would have been at home, but there were not many emergency cases, and the types of diseases were relatively simple, so there weren’t any extra troublesome matters.

At seven thirty in the morning, Chen Fang and Zhang Zixu, who were taking over, had already taken their positions, and Liu Nongqiu also took a break from his seat to join them for breakfast in the rest room.

Dai Linfang briefed Chen Fang about the night shift situation: ”The situation throughout the night was manageable, mainly debridement and suturing, with occasional manual realignments handled by Brother Lu.”

”Furthermore, the Hand Surgery department asked Brother Lu to perform a tendon suture surgery, and would call to check in.”

”During the day, there are more specialists at work, so many specialist emergencies have been handled, you can rest more during this time.”

”Nighttime sees more activity.”

”The most intense moment was when the three of us went for debridement at the same time...”

Having previously worked in the emergency surgery department, Chen Fang felt slightly relieved upon hearing this as she tore open a noodle bag: ”This pace is okay, just fear chaotic dumping of difficult cases.”

Lu Cheng said: ”That definitely won’t happen, the trauma center is not specially set up to take the blame.”

”Other instructors consider our relatively young and sparse setup here, and have been quite considerate.”

”However, we should also think about gradually advancing and taking on the tasks we should own.”

”While Professors Qu and Dong are still around, let’s perform surgeries solidly to alleviate the pressure on the emergency surgery department.”

”Currently, after the performance reform, income is based on workload; earning a decent amount to buy extra meat is always delightful.”

”Our trauma center doesn’t need to conduct ward rounds, but after operations, the details that need attention should still be communicated well with others in the ward.”

”I’ll lie down and rest for a while after the shift change.”

Dai Linfang tilted his head, feeling slightly surprised: ”You’re not going home to rest?”

”I’ll go home in the afternoon to take a shower and change my clothes.” Lu Cheng glanced at Chen Fang and then at Dai Linfang:

”You don’t have to follow my lead, take proper rest.”

”As I said, I’m filling in gaps, and in the coming two months, definitely need to implement more things.”

”I’m not much older than you and Brother Chen, can only rely on spending more time; otherwise, why should I be the director?”

Lu Cheng’s expression seemed relaxed, but in truth, his internal pressure was considerable.

Lu Cheng also feared his incompetency, endangering lives; if he handled too many lives carelessly, he’d have nightmares...

Chen Fang lowered her head and started eating noodles, while Dai Linfang let out a slow breath: ”Well, there’s no choice, you are the leader, everyone follows your lead.”

These words weren’t meant to provoke, but were honest realities.

The trauma center is indeed a mess, with priority in promotions but also a place others are reluctant to manage.

It’s just started now, not yet formally into the right track.

However, the trauma center has one advantage, which is after surgery and saving lives, the trivial tasks like ward rounds and writing medical records do not require attention from the trauma center.

...

Lu Cheng napped for a while, roughly two to three hours, before being woken up by Chen Fang.

”Lu Cheng, an open acute abdominal case just arrived, bleeding is difficult to stop. Although the resuscitation room intercepted it, Director Tian called me to get you over there quickly to assist.”

Chen Fang awkwardly touched her head: ”Director Tian originally asked whether you were still in the department today, and I just answered honestly.”

By the rules, Lu Cheng shouldn’t be on consecutive duty shifts, Tian Zhiliang’s call was merely a casual inquiry.

But finding out Lu Cheng was still in the hospital, he did not hesitate to call Lu Cheng directly to attend to the patient.

Upon hearing this, Lu Cheng immediately flipped himself out of bed, slipped his feet into his shoes, and without bothering to fit the heels, he quickly headed to the washroom to splash his face.

Chen Fang followed behind, saying, ”Brother Lu, also, the emergency department accumulated two fracture patients, the trauma surgery doctor on duty today is a bit irritable, after entering the operating room, there are two open fractures.”

”Indeed can’t get out of the operating room, called us to ask either for a patient transfer or to have the trauma center handle it.”
