System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

Dai Linfang and Lu Cheng were explaining some of the projects their research group was working on to the two professors, while the professors were educating Lu Cheng and his colleagues on minimally invasive clinical practices and other matters.

After a lunch, they all felt quite satisfied with their conversation.

...

After the two professors went to rest, Dai Linfang tidied up the table, and then took out his notebook to jot down some notes.

Lu Cheng curiously tiptoed to take a look: ”Brother Dai, what are you doing?”

Dai Linfang replied, ”Documenting the perspectives and pursuits at different hospital levels.”

Lu Cheng felt a sudden tension, speaking honestly, ”Can you share them?”

Dai Linfang responded, ”Let me finish writing first. It’s not comprehensive though.”

Lu Cheng realized he might have been too hasty: ”Then I’ll go and do another round of patient visits.”

After hearing this, Dai Linfang coughed twice, finding Lu Cheng somewhat difficult to comprehend.

Half an hour later, Lu Cheng returned having earned 0.8 skill points, and Dai Linfang finally finished organizing his notes, tapping the table with his right hand’s index and middle fingers.

Before Lu Cheng could speak, Dai Linfang said, ”Brother Lu, as for the work Xiangya Hospital and our team are doing, I won’t boast about it myself; let others judge.”

”But today, I realized for the first time that a provincial top-tier hospital like the Provincial People’s Hospital is not necessarily on par with the nation’s top-tier hospitals.”

”They’re pursuing ’minimization’ and ’subtle change’ in treating specific types of diseases, focusing on detailed improvements.”

Lu Cheng understood Dai Linfang’s words: ”Yes, for example, the minimally invasive splenectomy performed with laparoscopic intervention.”

The minimally invasive splenectomy essentially reduces the inherent trauma caused by spleen removal, but it doesn’t enhance the overall quality of the splenectomy.

If you were to rate it overall, it would only raise the surgery’s score from a 6 to around 6.5 or 7.

In contrast, the Spleen Preservation Surgery directly uplifts the overall score of the splenectomy to 9.5/9.8!

As much as one is capable, one should undertake such tasks.

”Continuous refinement, constant optimization of surgical plans, reducing patient suffering, improving perioperative quality and postoperative quality of life, and demonstrating more humanistic care.”

”It’s certainly not easy!~”

Dai Linfang sighed, ”Actually, these two professors are smart people and passionate teachers.”

Lu Cheng never doubted this fact; many who enter and continue in the medical field have a sense of passion.

A provincial top-tier hospital cannot directly tackle the most advanced breakthroughs in specialized fields, nor claim to pioneer treatments for a certain disease.

But they still need to conduct research. So what can they do? They can work on detailed care, improve medical services, refine surgeries, and make micro-adjustments in surgeries!

For example, if Modu Sixth Hospital is the pioneer of Limb Replantation Surgery, then several top provincial hospitals, including the Provincial People’s Hospital’s hand surgery department, are the ones optimizing those micro-operations!

”What do you think State People’s Hospital is thinking of doing?” Lu Cheng asked.

Dai Linfang’s perspective and analysis were truly refreshing.

”Actually, it’s similar to the Provincial People’s Hospital, but the steps will be slower by several years.”

”Being in a remote location, the talent reservoir and exposure to talent are completely different, much like the trauma center that the Provincial People’s Hospital established as the first-tier team ten years ago, whereas Xiangzhou was nearly ten years behind.”

Dai Linfang continued, ”We’re still learning!”

”Spleen Preservation Surgery has actually been proposed for many years. Both Xiangya Hospital and Xiangya Second Hospital are doing it, alongside the Provincial People’s Hospital and Sha City First Hospital’s general surgery departments.”

”However, at Xiangzhou People’s Hospital, there remains a certain degree of lag.”

”Mainly, to deal with tumor treatments, the general surgery department has already spent a lot of time costs, so they cannot allocate the time and cost for spleen injuries.”

”Patients with liver cancer and bile duct cancer may not all have the ability and financial bases to travel to Sha City; most will choose to go to a better hospital, but those without such capability, those willing to save money, cannot be ignored either.”

Dai Linfang shared a different perspective with Lu Cheng; he previously worked in the oncology department.

Every experience and cognition is never entirely useless!

Dai Linfang continued, ”As for the environment and atmosphere in the County Hospital, Brother Lu, you know it better than I do, so I won’t say much.”

”Why are you recording all this?” Lu Cheng realized he always felt a bit lacking in front of Dai Linfang.

It’s unrelated to technique, research, vision, or perspective.

”Just recording it, in case it’s useful one day,” Dai Linfang put away his notebook.

”Brother Lu, although we have a good relationship, my notebook is personal and I’m not going to show you.”

”The notes that I can share will all be posted in the group.”

Lu Cheng laughed, ”Do serious people even keep notes?”

Dai Linfang joked, ”Brother Lu, have you finally acknowledged that I’m serious and normal?”

Lu Cheng: ”...”

In reality, Dai Linfang is someone who is open to all sorts of things; his way of handling matters is straightforward yet cunning.

...

”Xiao Dong, what do you think of this Lu Cheng?” Qu Daowen and Dong Liumeng were walking back to the dormitory.

”Talking can spread rumors, but the skills at hand can’t lie.”

Dong Liumeng closed his eyes, ”Though incredible, one cannot help but believe it.”

”Professor Qu, do geniuses like this really exist in the world?”

Qu Daowen chuckled lightly, ”I haven’t delved deeply, but in our view, those at Xiangya Hospital and those at Union Hospital are considered geniuses.”

”On the other hand, compared to the fanciful aspects of research and technique creation, what I see is Lu Cheng’s solid fundamental skills.”

”This is a promising candidate for surgery.”

In Qu Daowen’s working era, research wasn’t emphasized; the focus was entirely on honing technique and performing surgeries.

He was one of the group forced to transition into research, a path he went quite far down, benefiting somewhat from the transition, yet realizing ’the harshness of the times.’

In the field of surgery, whether professors from Kyoto Union Hospital or those from Xiangya Hospital, Qu Daowen does not agree that the technical gap between them and him is huge to the extent of total inconceivability.

But in the domain of research, Qu Daowen often felt powerless!

Dong Liumeng hesitated, saying, ”Professor Qu, I also feel like I’m getting old.”

Qu Daowen smiled, ”Everyone gets old.”

”In any case, whether in technique or research, I’m not at the forefront of either, and have seen many juniors rise. I’m used to it.”

This is a matter of mindset.

Dong Liumeng is still quite accomplished. Among his peers, he barely keeps up with the ’front tier’ professionally; therefore, when it comes to sheer operation and surgical skills, not touching on ’theory’ and concept modification, Dong Liumeng doesn’t think he falls very short compared to the Associate Professors at Xiangya Hospital.

Dong Liumeng chuckled awkwardly twice, suddenly feeling vulnerable, ”Professor Qu, do you think my coming here can be considered a getaway?”

Being invited to the prefecture-level city hospital to help set up a trauma center was supposed to be a ’staycation’ mode.

But only on the second day, Dong Liumeng realized his unluckiness in running into someone like Lu Cheng.

Dong Liumeng almost didn’t find any special advantage of standing alongside Lu Cheng, except being older.

”Well, it depends on how you view it. Embrace a broader mindset, cultivate inner peace, and avoid the urge to compare or suppress others; you’ll find more contentment.”

”After all, you’ll spend much less time and energy!” Qu Daowen advised.

Dong Liumeng turned his head, voice tightening, ”Getting free meals and drinks?”

Doing less, receiving no less pay, eating no less meals, isn’t that freeloading?

Qu Daowen took a deep breath, ”It might be even more exaggerated than you’re suggesting.”

”With such a solid foundational operational base, I don’t believe Lu Cheng only knows these surgical techniques.”

”The resources gathered around him are not insignificant either.”

Dong Liumeng lowered his head. At this moment, he remembered his younger self, the Dong Liumeng of the past.

However, facing Lu Cheng now, Dong Liumeng felt quite moved.

Matching Lu Cheng against the past Dong Liumeng?

Dong Liumeng felt inferior, with only his doctoral degree from years ago being something he was proud of…
