System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

State People’s Hospital, Trauma Surgery, Director’s Office.

Zhu Guanghong was leisurely fiddling with pothos and orchids at the window while inside the office, Deputy Chief Physician Min Rui’s voice ponderously reported: ”Director Zhu, the emergency department has done manual fracture reduction again.”

”Recently, in the past week, our department’s rate of emergency fracture patients admitted has decreased by a full 30 percent, our on-call schedule nearly overlaps with the emergency department’s Lu Cheng, and the decrease in patient volume is the most significant.”

”Director Wu is operating like this? Isn’t this somewhat inappropriate?”

The head of the Trauma Surgery ward is called Zhu Guanghong, and his title is Deputy Chief Physician. The other two team leaders are Chief Physician and Associate Professor.

It’s harder to attain Associate Professor status than Chief Physician at the State People’s Hospital.

Zhu Guanghong gently turned his head, his tone interrogating: ”Min Rui, what do you want to say?”

Min Rui hastily said: ”Director Zhu, you should go to the hospital leadership!”

”Professor Huang and Director Wu can do other surgeries, but here?”

”Moreover, they themselves caused this situation of not having the ward director position back then, it has nothing to do with you, Director Zhu?”

Zhu Guanghong turned and walked to the desk, with a smile: ”You’re asking me to go to the hospital leadership?”

”Min Rui? Do you think the manual reductions done by Dr. Lu Cheng in the emergency department have issues?”

Zhu Guanghong extended his hand: ”Show me the evidence.”

Min Rui definitely couldn’t find evidence, even if there were flawed evidence, peers wouldn’t expose: ”Initially, it was Director Wu who insisted on establishing a trauma center, later it was halted after some time...”

”Bringing it up again now, isn’t it just to cover the mess?”

”In order to balance things and stabilize Lu Cheng, letting him take on this responsibility, and assigning him some of the conditions to stretch the trauma center’s benefits, why?”

Wu Xiang is a Chief Physician and also a committee member of the Xiang Province Medical Association’s Trauma Surgery Group, with a very rich resume. He has studied at Jishuitan in Kyoto, the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong, and used to be a ward director.

Zhu Guanghong has a medium height and a slim build, with piercing eyes: ”Min Rui, don’t hurry, Director Wu is a thoughtful director!”

”I just temporarily hold the ward director position because the trauma surgery needs a ward director.”

”Director Wu likes to experiment, his intention is not to affect patients, but hopes for the betterment of the department and hospital, this sentiment is worthy of respect.”

”I don’t have such skill, won’t join the fray, but also won’t cause trouble.”

”It’s a good thing for the hospital and patients that the trauma center was established.”

Zhu Guanghong’s position is indeed very awkward, becoming ward director under the attack by Chief Physician and Associate Professor and Chief Physician.

Zhu Guanghong never thought he would become the ward director, the other two ”teachers” inflicted a wound on themselves, so what could he do?

”But?” Min Rui hesitated.

Zhu Guanghong gestured with his hand: ”Recognize yourself, recognize the situation, if the fracture patients decrease, there must be transformation, gradually explore complex fracture conditions.”

”Director Wu’s idea back then was a bit too hurried, mainly because he experienced a lot of patient suffering, too sympathetic, too eager to heal many patients, hence the rush to establish the trauma center.”

”Otherwise, in that situation, Director Wu could have done nothing, and peacefully retired at the director position.”

Min Rui replied realistically: ”Then it would break the balance in the department, forcibly reducing our group’s patient volume?”

”Oh, not affecting their performance, huh?”

Doctors need to earn a living, they have to rely on skill and workload to earn.

If patients are intercepted, how can one be full, forget about sentiments?

As a doctor in the city-level hospital, Min Rui certainly believes in skill as the king!

He had examined the patients settled by Lu Cheng’s reductions several times.

Lu Cheng’s manual reductions were flawless, beneficial to patients, and not done recklessly!

However, Director Wu Xiang’s decision to allocate the trauma surgery conditions for his past deeds was incorrect.

It seems Zhu Guanghong, whom he follows, was too calm: ”To transform certainly means facing pain.”

”Director Zhu, I just paid off my car loan, still have the mortgage, my son is in high school, my daughter is in extracurricular classes, my pressure is high.” Min Rui responded to the national policy and had a second child immediately.

Zhu Guanghong has reached the shore, while Min Rui is still struggling in the water.

”Speak your mind directly.” Zhu Guanghong said calmly.

”Director Zhu, I honestly can’t handle it, if you don’t talk with the hospital leadership, I’ll have no choice but to apply to transfer to Director Huang’s side.” Min Rui’s voice was cold and realistic.

He relies on his skills for a living, relies on surgical volume for a living, doesn’t want to discuss sentiments, nor does he want to experience pain.

If the suggestions are ineffective, then transfer teams, continue relying on skills for a living.

First, make a living.

I want surgical volume.

Zhu Guanghong’s expression slightly changed: ”Min Rui, many in the department hold high expectations of you, we let you follow me for that reason.”

”Are you planning to work on fractures your whole life?”

”If you face difficult conditions, do you plan to abandon them? In the future, when Director Wu and Professor Huang retire, and I’ve retired, do you plan to leave these patients?”

Min Rui scratched his head vigorously: ”I don’t know... Director Zhu, I can’t think about so much now.”

”Recently, my father got sick and hospitalized; it cost 300,000 in no time, monthly expenses at home can’t be lessened...”

”I want to focus on learning, but reality doesn’t allow me to relax.”

”I rely on surgeries to make money, legitimately, I don’t find anything dark about it.”
