System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

”Teacher Tong, please speak slowly, the amount of information is a bit overwhelming for me to digest at once.” Lu Cheng asked Tong Yuan’an to calm down a bit.

Tong Yuan’an said, ”Director Tan confidently took the team abroad for an exchange this time. You could also understand it as showing off.”

”But when performing on site, it flopped.”

”Now, Professor Tan is really angry.”

”Hmm, it’s around three in the afternoon over there now.”

Lu Cheng keenly caught onto the key information and cautiously said, ”Teacher Tong, does Teacher Tan mean that there’s a problem with our suturing technique?”

”It’s not a technique problem at all, it’s a personal issue.”

”Dog meat can’t make it to the main table!~”

Tong Yuan’an said gloomily, ”The person Professor Tan took along this time usually performs quite well, and their performance in the training room has always been stable. But when it came to performing in front of outsiders, they got nervous, so nervous that their hands shook.”

”They still lack experience performing under pressure.”

”Sigh...” Tong Yuan’an let out a long sigh.

”Then why did Professor Tan scold you?” Lu Cheng asked.

Tong Yuan’an: ”It’s still those old issues. Director Tan said, if only I had taken you... and so on.”

”Of course, there are also good things!”

”One of my students went with the team, and they performed quite well in tendon suturing.”

”The team of Professor Tajima from Japan didn’t manage to show off successfully, and Director Tan was still quite pleased.”

”Of course, later on, Director Tan personally stepped in, allowing the foreign hand surgery community to once again witness our Hua Country’s technique.”

”However, because the student’s performance was poor, for now, this technique can only be seen as a personal performance and doesn’t represent its teachability.”

Lu Cheng said, ”Teacher Tong, did you just want to chat with me?”

”Something like that. But not entirely.” There was more in Tong Yuan’an’s words.

Lu Cheng knew Tong Yuan’an certainly had more to say, so he didn’t continue speaking.

Sure enough, Tong Yuan’an was silent for nearly ten seconds. Then, with a forlorn tone, he said, ”Xiao Lu, this time we saw a tendon suturing device.”

”With a standard modified Tang method and modified Tsuge suturing technique device, the surgeon just needs to install the device and idiot-proofly follow the needle points to get ninety percent suturing effect.”

When Lu Cheng heard this, he was stunned: ”Huh? Can just anyone operate it?”

Tong Yuan’an said, ”An outsider can operate it; the suturing auxiliary device very meticulously marks the needle entry and exit points and sequence.”

”Moreover, there are auxiliary tools for needle placement and threading.”

”Although it’s currently only in the testing and demonstration stage, Director Tan says it really is quite handy to use.”

At this point, Tong Yuan’an laughed: ”Perhaps this illustrates our cognitive and cultural differences. We’ve always focused on improving personal skill levels, while many people overseas think more about improving the tools they use, simplifying the procedure, and not necessarily pursuing the best single operation level.”

”This is a cultural difference in thinking. Many professors abroad won’t put themselves through the grind of practicing operations; they value innovation more. People are the source of ideas.”

There’s an old saying in Hua Country, to do good work, one must first sharpen their tools.

Compared to a chainsaw, sharpening an ax, no matter how sharp, results in vastly different efficiency.

Now logging has developed to the stage of logging machines, where one person with a machine can accomplish what a hundred or even a thousand people going up the mountain to chop wood could do. This is the breakthrough in labor capability brought about by technology.

”Teacher Tong, there’s no need to be disheartened. We don’t have the technology or the research reserves, so we can only push ourselves to break through.”

”It’s okay.”

”Isn’t there also an emphasis abroad on precise surgeries? Anything related to precise treatment still requires honing personal skills.” Lu Cheng comforted.

Lu Cheng could also understand why Tong Yuan’an was feeling down. If such a suturing device were developed, vice professors like Tong Yuan’an, who pride themselves on their technique, would continually lose their appeal.

For example, once such equipment is developed and applied, Long County People’s Hospital wouldn’t face situations where tendon injuries couldn’t be treated.

”Xiao Lu, we still have a long way to go.”

”Currently, the forefront of hand surgery has already integrated with neurosurgery, involving things like brain-machine interfaces and nerve transposition transplants.”

”Traditional limb replantation, skin flaps, and the like are already considered commonplace.”

”Many domestic teams are also evolving towards procedures for functional reconstruction in cases of peripheral nerve injuries and paralysis...”

”If we can’t keep up with the times, we’ll all be relatively eliminated and become those who accompany the frontrunners.” Tong Yuan’an’s tone became somewhat subdued.

Accompanying the frontrunners is a verb, but it can also be a noun.

Those with dreams and capabilities don’t want to become others’ backdrop.

However, the world is vast, a discipline is wide, full of talent, with people as numerous as carp crossing a river, swarming everywhere.

Sure enough, Tong Yuan’an does not want to passively be eliminated, but sometimes, things don’t happen just because you don’t want them to.

Lu Cheng isn’t exactly a complete research novice: ”Teacher Tong, I’ve also read quite a few articles, including those from different teams domestically and abroad.”

”Indeed, our current research path domestically and abroad is relatively different; abroad it’s focused on equipment development and application, while we’re focused primarily on surgical development.”

”For us clinical doctors, foreign research aims to reduce burdens and increase capabilities, while ours aims to increase burdens and increase capabilities.”
