System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

March 16th, Tuesday, the sixth day of the second lunar month, 11:30!

Lu Cheng hurriedly walked into the doctor’s lounge and saw that Qu Daowen and Dong Liumeng were still there. He apologized, ”Professor Qu, Professor Dong, I’m really sorry, the scheduling at our hospital isn’t very scientific.”

”It made you both work a reverse 24-hour shift with me.”

The emergency surgery department’s shift includes a night shift followed by a daytime ward shift.

It’s not exhausting, but you have to endure for a long time.

Qu Daowen joked while drinking tea, ”It’s Dr. Lu who’s on duty, not the two of us.”

Dai Linfang raised his hand, ”Professor Qu, I’m just tagging along.”

Then he handed over his phone, ”Ordered individually, do you think there’s anything you want to add to the menu?”

”Actually, Professor Qu, I can take you and Professor Dong out to eat.”

Yesterday at noon, Lu Cheng had arranged for Qu Daowen and the others to be entertained outside, while dinner was hosted by the hospital leaders.

But the two professors, after eating dinner, went straight to the emergency department and haven’t left since.

”We’ll talk about dinner later. Xiao Dong and I will return to the dorm to rest for a bit. Getting older means energy slacks off; we can’t endure as much anymore.”

”As for lunch, we still prefer to eat with Dr. Lu,” Qu Daowen decided on behalf of Dong Liumeng.

”This is fine then, for four people, seven dishes is a bit excessive.”

Dai Linfang quickly retracted the phone, ”As long as there are one or two dishes the professors find tasty, these dishes are lucky enough.”

”Brother Lu, do you want to add another dish?”

Lu Cheng said, ”It’s fine... no need!~”

After he finished speaking, Lu Cheng took out two packs of Huazi from his white coat lining, which he had specially asked a nurse to buy: ”Professors, I don’t smoke, so I’m not sure what you prefer.”

The faces of Qu Daowen and Dong Liumeng were momentarily awkward, ”You’re like this?”

”Just regular provisions, don’t be too polite,” Lu Cheng said.

”It’s already bought,” Lu Cheng added.

If it hadn’t been for noticing the two’s constant swallowing around midnight, Lu Cheng wouldn’t have realized they had run out of supplies.

Dong Liumeng then opened a pack and pushed the rest to Lu Cheng, ”Dr. Lu, keep the rest for hosting use.”

He started handing out the cigarettes to Qu Daowen, asking Dai Linfang, ”Xiao Dai, continue, I’m very curious about how impressive Lu Cheng is.”

”We were talking about animal models just a while ago.”

Dai Linfang said, ”Oh, speaking of this, I got into trouble, broke our team members’ gifts.”

”It happened after the New Year...” Dai Linfang ended up chatting with the professors casually.

Dong Liumeng and Qu Daowen smoked two cigarettes each but still barely felt satisfied.

After Dai Linfang finished, Dong Liumeng concluded, ”Dr. Lu is truly productive, from tendon suturing techniques to vascular and nerve suturing techniques, then to spleen and liver suturing techniques.”

”And the exploration and development of practical clinical applications.”

Dong Liumeng slightly bowed, ”Dr. Lu, respect!~”

Those not into research might just feel, oh, there are new techniques upon hearing what Dai Linfang said.

But those engaged in research understand how difficult it is for Lu Cheng to achieve so much, reflecting his vast potential.

Staying at Xiangzhou People’s Hospital, Lu Cheng is like a pearl covered in dust.

Lu Cheng replied, ”Thank you, Professor Dong, for the praise. It’s all thanks to the guidance of the teachers and the sincere cooperation among our team members that we have the achievements we do now.”

”Research is research, and clinical practice is clinical practice; they still can’t be lumped together. Speaking of, the laparoscopic spleen preservation surgery you talked about last night, Professor Dong, is what piques my interest.”

”At my previous unit, the County Hospital, no one dared operate a spleen removal surgery laparoscopically, the emergency department hasn’t even introduced such equipment!”

Is spleen removal surgery difficult?

Difficult and not difficult.

Performing spleen removal on a ruptured spleen laparoscopically requires some skills and a strong foundation.

At the Provincial People’s Hospital, there are many who can perform laparoscopic splenectomy; it’s standard for ordinary doctors, but such a standard isn’t applicable everywhere.

As Dai Linfang said, in the information age, even outsiders can reach many doctors, but for a person to become the most ordinary doctor, they still need years of training and experience.

Research shortcuts can only allow you to excel in single capability, giving others dimensional reduction strikes, but not making you leap to be above thousands.

Falling behind in fundamental skills, you can’t escape any of it.

This is medicine, this is clinical practice. This is why people say learning medicine is akin to inviting a bolt of lightning.

No matter how good you are at research, you still have to master the essentials, surgical techniques, and theoretical reserves.

Dong Liumeng looked at Dai Linfang, ”Hasn’t Xiao Dai given Dr. Lu a lesson on this?”

Dai Linfang shook his head, chuckling, ”Professor Dong, my teacher handles diseases that mostly aren’t suitable for laparoscopic tools.”

Dong Liumeng suddenly understood, ”Right, among the conditions your Xiangya Hospital professors deal with, hardly anyone dares use laparoscopy, right?”

Although laparoscopy is minimally invasive, it also increases the difficulty of operation.

Treating the condition is hard enough already, adding difficulty on top of it is purely for thrill-seeking.

It’s not that minimally invasive is best, widespread even in top-tier hospitals. Conversely, many top teaching hospitals, to explore new conditions’ treatment, conduct surgeries on difficult diseases, rather than emphasizing minimally invasive practices.

Lu Cheng’s seeking advice on cognitive and operational deficits made Professors Dong Liumeng and Qu Daowen feel valued, thus making them more proactive and enthusiastic during science popularization and explanation.
