System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

March 14, Emergency Department, Ward, Doctor’s Office.

The trauma surgery on-duty doctor, Lan Yuan, approached Chen Fang: ”Brother Fang, what’s going on with that Lu Cheng from your department? How come he handled a fracture from our department directly?”

Chen Fang, the daytime staff of the surgery ward, was writing medical records and glanced at Lan Yuan, his peer from the same cohort: ”Lan Yuan, I’m not too sure either?”

”Did Lu Cheng actually perform a fracture surgery?”

”That shouldn’t be the case, right? Xiao Lu has always been very proper; he wouldn’t handle cases outside his assigned diseases.”

”Let me ask around for you.” Chen Fang picked up the phone to make a call.

Lan Yuan moved closer, stopping Chen Fang’s action, scratching his head with his left hand: ”Brother Fang, there’s no need to call; I’ve already asked.”

”Brother Zhou said Lu Cheng had checked with the hospital leadership, Dean Yao, the medical department, and our Director Wu. They all decided that fracture patients also belong to the trauma category, and if Lu Cheng can handle them, he can do so independently.”

”But truly, Brother Zhou Lü wasn’t too confident, so he immediately called me… I didn’t expect that your emergency department had such a repositioning expert.”

Zhou Lü is the on-duty doctor at the emergency general surgery clinic, a senior attending soon to be promoted to associate chief surgeon, more experienced than both Chen Fang and Lan Yuan.

”Little did I know, previously Xiao Lu seemed to have never done manual repositioning…”

Chen Fang’s brows furrowed: ”But Lu Cheng’s repositioning technique was really good?”

Lan Yuan nodded: ”There’s a lot to say about that!”

”Regardless, when I saw the pre-operative scan and heard the patient mention the moment Lu Cheng performed the repositioning, my heart immediately sank.”

”Of course, I also checked out the post-repositioning scan with Dr. Lu Cheng.”

”Tsk, tsk! Definitely put in some effort!”

”Who exactly is this Lu Cheng?”

Lan Yuan sat down beside Chen Fang, covering his head with his right hand: ”I think Director Wu agreeing to Lu Cheng doing manual repositioning could cause some issues…”

Chen Fang’s gaze flashed: ”It shouldn’t be that serious, right?”

”Xiao Lu is quite cautious and generally low-key.”

Lan Yuan maintained his usual expression, thinking to himself that Lu Cheng is quite well-liked in the emergency department: ”It’s not your department that’s in trouble; it’s ours.”

”You know the current big environment; our trauma department practically relies on the emergency and bone fractures to survive.”

”If this trauma center gets underway according to Lu Cheng’s approach.”

”The trouble is quite significant.” Lan Yuan thought of the possible dangers.

Chen Fang understood Lan Yuan’s implication: ”It shouldn’t be that bad; Lu Cheng surely can’t handle all the patients?”

”Even if the trauma center has surgeries, it relies on quantity. It won’t only be about fractures.”

”Whoa.” Chen Fang suddenly muttered quietly.

”Hmm?” Lan Yuan glanced at Chen Fang.

After pondering, Chen Fang said: ”Lu Cheng’s specialty in residency training was orthopedics, seems like your trauma surgery department.”

Upon hearing this, Lan Yuan’s face immediately changed, getting up and quickly leaving.

This matter is crucial; he must report to Director Wu Xiang immediately.

Lu Cheng handling several fracture patients in the emergency department to boost his performance doesn’t undermine the fundamentals of the trauma department, but if Lu Cheng is coming from the trauma department, that changes everything.

Lan Yuan stepped out and dialed Director Wu Xiang.

Wu Xiang was out of town for a meeting. After hearing Lan Yuan’s report, he responded in a complaining tone: ”You’re calling me at this hour just to say this?”

”How many patients can one Lu Cheng possibly divert? Use your brain, alright?”

”But, Director Wu, Lu Cheng was trained in trauma surgery.” Lan Yuan said.

Wu Xiang was quite displeased and remarked: ”You’re also a senior attending in trauma surgery… and yet you don’t seem capable of carrying the department forward?”

Lan Yuan was speechless: ”Director Wu, I’m just reporting the situation to you.”

”Alright, stop making such a fuss every day. Learn more things.” Wu Xiang ended the call unilaterally.

...

Emergency Department, ER.

Lu Cheng completed emergency hemostasis and was calling the on-duty doctor from the cardiothoracic department: ”Yes, it’s just a simple vascular injury; the bleeding is currently stopped.”

”Once the patient completes the CT examination, they’ll be taken to the operating room. Relatively simple, sorry to trouble you to come for the surgery.”

Xiangzhou People’s Hospital doesn’t have a specialized vascular surgery department, which currently falls under the cardiothoracic branch; the on-duty doctor asked: ”Who’s on duty in your emergency department today? Could you call Lu Cheng?”

”It’s me, Lu Cheng.” Lu Cheng replied.

”You’re Lu Cheng? Alright then, our director just mentioned this morning that from now on, traumatic vascular emergencies are managed by your emergency department.”

”Perfect, helps alleviate our burden.” The on-duty doctor said.

”Of course, if you find it unmanageable, you can still call us; after all, it’s all for work.” The voice on the other end was especially amicable and cordial.

Unlike other specialties, cardiovascular surgery would be glad if vascular surgery could be separated; the cardiothoracic department gets overwhelmed with aorta and artery dissection surgeries.

For some of the minor surgeries, they wish someone could take them over.

At this moment, Lu Cheng being eager to take on the role is perfect for them.

Cardiovascular surgery is overwhelmed just with cardiothoracic and large vessel cases.

Lu Cheng replied: ”Teacher, here’s the thing, I’m on duty in the ER today, going to the operating room isn’t very convenient.”

”Just keep a phone number; someone’s there in the ER from internal medicine.”

”You can handle it.” The on-duty doctor smiled, giving Lu Cheng advice.

Lu Cheng glanced at Dai Linfang, who was calming the patient, then nodded: ”Alright then, teacher, I’ll call you to report as needed.”
