System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

This note under the name Lu Mang comes from a teacher recommended by Teacher Xiao Mingqi in Kyoto. Lu Cheng had contacted him before, but Lu Mang asked for too much, and the two of them fell out.

Lu Cheng had thought there would be no follow-up, and hadn’t expected the other party to contact him again, and to ask this.

Lu Cheng typed back: ”Teacher Lu, I was afraid of disturbing you again to no effect.”

Lu Mang: ”If I don’t contact you, you don’t know to contact me?”

Lu Cheng thought, what kind of classic quote is that?

Lu Cheng replied: ”Teacher Lu, I still haven’t fully thought through your proposal for the time being.”

Lu Mang: ”All right then!”

”Since you put it that way, it seems I also have no way to deal with you, but I really do need to assign you a task.”

Lu Cheng: ???

”Teacher Lu, what task could you assign to me?”

Lu Mang: ”Quite a few general surgery operations fell into relative stagnation after the 1980s. There have been some improvements at present, but nothing that counts as a breakthrough.”

”But right now, as far as I know, Germany already has a team starting exploratory research on Surgical Techniques in the field of Liver Preservation Surgery.”

”Our country’s development in surgery has now accumulated a certain foundation, so we cannot afford to be absent from this track, only focusing on building basic reserves.”

”Recently I’ve already discussed this with quite a few colleagues in the specialty. Our decision is that, whether or not we can break through, we must at least step up to the challenge, we cannot shy away and pretend not to see it.”

”My current main field is organ transplantation, but some colleagues have dumped a bit of a task on me, and matched it with some funding.”

”The more I thought about it, the more I felt that instead of allocating this money to myself, it would be better to pass it on to you.”

”What do you think?” Lu Mang replied very bluntly.

From Lu Mang’s tone, you could hear that his social standing is very high, and his perspective is high as well.

Someone offering money is of course a good thing, but whether this money can be taken is another matter: ”Teacher Lu, I’m just entering the research field. My various foundations are still quite weak at the moment, and I’m afraid I can’t shoulder such a heavy responsibility.”

The precondition for debating on Huashan is that you have the qualification to climb Huashan.

In the martial world, not just any Tom, Dick, or Harry can set foot on Huashan and sit there expounding doctrine.

This is a race among peers all over the world, and Lu Cheng didn’t feel he had any ’sure-win’ confidence.

”It’s not like I’m asking you to definitely win; I’m just asking you to go and broaden your horizons.”

”If everyone we send has to win an award, absolutely must win, then numbers alone would be the decisive advantage.”

”But we do need people to go, and in our industry there must be quite a few people and quite a few teams who go into this track and cultivate it deeply.”

”Previously, the Suturing Technique you helped me with was highly correlated with organs. I think it does have some potential to be used for follow-up work on Liver Preservation Surgery.”

”If you don’t need this funding, I’ll transfer it to someone else, but if you want it, I’ll transfer it to you.”

”The main thing is that my current research focus isn’t here, and I can’t spare the time. Otherwise I’d just do it myself.”

Every specialty has many research branches, each fine and complicated.

Very few people can cover the entire path.

Everyone’s energy is relatively limited, so you must choose your deep-research route carefully.

”Teacher, it’s all right even if I fail?” Lu Cheng was rather surprised.

”Of course. This funding is ’trial funding’!~ It’s an entry ticket, basically an early-stage investment.” said Lu Mang.

”Don’t be so wishy-washy. Give me a definite answer—do you want it or not.”

Lu Cheng was quite straightforward: ”I can take it.”

”If you can take it, then fill out a form, and make sure to properly fill in my name in the ’referrer’ field—don’t typo it when you type.”

”My workplace is Union Hospital.” After carefully listing some information for Lu Cheng, Lu Mang just sent him a blank form.

After ending the chat, Lu Cheng still felt utterly baffled.

But this bafflement also made one feel a bit happy.

The current project team could be described as so poor it was ringing, and if such a sum of project funding could be injected, then no matter how much, it could make the team a bit more well-resourced.

The Surgical Technique development and refinement for Liver Preservation Surgery requires funding at least in the tens of millions.

But once it succeeds, it will be a great benefit to the country and the people.

Before long, Lu Cheng told Mu Nanshu about the entire conversation with Professor Lu Mang and how he’d managed to get in touch with Professor Lu.

Mu Nanshu was very surprised, but also knew that the kind of secret that Lu Cheng kept guarded really was ”not something to be casually spread around”!

Mu Nanshu asked: ”So the real reason that Cao Qi was so polite to you today lies here?”

Lu Cheng replied: ”It should be. But I guess Cao Qi doesn’t know that that teacher has already packed up and gone home. He’s no longer in charge now.”

Mu Nanshu smiled and said: ”My dad says medicine is a very special and independent branch. The skills within it are a natural and high-level calling card for building connections. Their networking power is stronger than that of any other practical skill.”

”Thinking about it, we never understood this deeply before; we hadn’t reached this stage yet, so we never got a taste of the sweetness.”

”The grace of saving a life can probably only be understood by those who have gone through life and death.”

Lu Cheng replied: ”I never thought about these things.”

Mu Nanshu said: ”Of course—you’re just doing your duty. You don’t have to use your favors as leverage, but if others don’t know to be grateful and repay you, then they’re the ones who don’t understand things.”

”I once heard my teacher say, between life and death there is great terror; between life and death there is great enlightenment. Between life and death, nothing else is a big deal.”

Lu Cheng said: ”This is the first time I’ve tasted the sweetness of this, but I don’t feel that good about it, because I’m afraid I won’t be able to hold myself steady and will get lost.”
