System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

”I didn’t quite understand the situation at first...”

Song Qihua was signaling to Lu Cheng, clearly hoping he wouldn’t spill the unpleasant matters from before.

Lu Cheng gradually freed one hand, responding cautiously, ”Professor Zhu, I do remember Zhu Sangwook as a patient, but I had no idea about his connection with you.”

”Otherwise, I might not have acted so rashly.”

Professor Zhu hurriedly said, ”That can’t be!”

”Dr. Lu, that’s precisely why I didn’t call to press you.”

”We’re all in the industry, I’m aware of what points we should avoid.”

”On the way, I consulted many people with my child’s scans, feeling apprehensive all along, until my wife told me at 4 AM that the surgery succeeded and he was transferred to the ICU. Only then did I feel relieved.”

Song Qihua went on to explain the incident in more detail. It was merely a case of Professor Zhu’s child visiting his grandmother’s home in Ji City and slipping, resulting in unconsciousness on the spot.

Of course, the first choice was to send him to State People’s Hospital, but after the examination results were out, Professor Zhu’s wife immediately sent the scans to Professor Zhu...

Lu Cheng felt at ease and smiled, ”Professor Zhu, the person you should thank even more is Director Song Daoneng from our hospital’s Hepatobiliary Surgery; Zhu Sangwook’s surgery was performed by him.”

”I was merely an assistant, and I was out of the surgery room within twenty minutes.”

Song Qihua, having done his background check beforehand, continued in a knowing tone, ”Song Daoneng is the associate chief physician of Hepatobiliary Surgery and the lead surgeon of this operation...”

Professor Zhu nodded politely, saying, ”Thanks are due indeed, but I personally wanted to thank Dr. Lu first.”

”I didn’t bring much, just wanted to sincerely say thank you, as he’s my only child...” Professor Zhu held his hands together, his voice not choking, yet extremely sincere.

Lu Cheng casually replied, ”Professor Zhu, no worries, this is what I’m supposed to do, I would do the same for anyone.”

”I understand, and Director Song told me that you have to be on duty today, and have important matters in the following two days, which can’t be delayed. So I won’t disturb you further.”

”But I still wanted to come and leave you with a contact method, for future communication.”

”This request isn’t too much, is it?” Professor Zhu said with a somewhat humble smile.

Lu Cheng didn’t refuse; after Professor Zhu received the contact information, he left cheerfully.

As he was exiting the doctor’s office, he turned back to say, ”Dr. Lu, thank you. Life is priceless, I can’t give you an amount worth my son’s life.”

”It’s fine, Professor Zhu. Please rest first, I’m also very happy that Zhu Sangwook is recovering well.”

”I’ve been following his progress, and now hearing that he has survived the critical period reassures me.” Lu Cheng replied.

Professor Zhu and Song Qihua left one after another. Two minutes later, Song Qihua returned.

”Dr. Lu, I’m really sorry for the previous misunderstanding.”

”I’ll apologize again later; mainly, it’s because of Professor Zhu’s convenience that he didn’t explain things clearly to me.”

”I thought.” Song Qihua hesitated.

”In short, it’s all a misunderstanding.” Song Qihua finally walked away.

This farce came to an end.

Tian Zhiliang, who witnessed the whole scene, didn’t even think about his coffee. He immediately came over to closely inspect Lu Cheng.

After watching for a while, Tian Zhiliang asked, ”Xiao Lu, what patient did you see early this morning?”

”Acute abdomen due to liver and spleen injury, I only dealt with the intra-abdominal bleeding.” Lu Cheng replied with a smile.

Tian Zhiliang himself had the authority to review medical records, and Zhu Sangwook’s diagnostic scans were pretty explicit.

After looking over Zhu Sangwook’s CT layers, Tian Zhiliang immediately took a sharp breath, turning his head, and his gaze sweeping over Lu Cheng conveyed everything without words.

Even though Tian Zhiliang didn’t utter a word, the others, including Zhu Yuanzhou, understood his shock from his expression.

After slightly checking Zhu Sangwook’s diagnosis, everyone quietly went back to their work.

Lu Cheng didn’t boast about his achievements, he didn’t even know Zhu Sangwook’s identity, he only treated him as an ordinary patient.

In truth, Zhu Sangwook was just an ordinary patient; it was only after Lu Cheng saved him that his father, Professor Zhu from the Provincial People’s Hospital’s Respiratory Department, sought out Lu Cheng to express gratitude.

It wasn’t for show, nor flattering, Lu Cheng was simply doing his job.

Without Professor Zhu’s visit, not many would know Lu Cheng had resuscitated a patient named Zhu Sangwook, nor realized the difficulty of the life-saving surgery.

The silence lasted for a little while, then Tian Zhiliang spoke softly again, ”Lu Cheng, you’re so calm, surely you’ve revived more than one such patient?”

Lu Cheng answered calmly, ”Director Tian, I’ve lost a few as well.”

”I can only do my best.”

As Lu Cheng spoke, he again recalled Dai Linfang’s words.

If you can surpass all existing challenges, you can bypass many ’shackles and barriers’, if not, you must walk within the rules.

Lu Cheng’s proficiency is quite good.

But not good enough to surpass every hospital in a prefecture-level city, or everyone in a province.

Throughout the province, only a few chief physicians and professors exceed or match Lu Cheng’s capability, and some can still do better.

Thus, Lu Cheng is just a promising young talent, with his ’future’ to trade.

However, the future is uncertain, so everyone must focus on the present.

Tian Zhiliang’s uplifting topic was lofty, but Lu Cheng’s picked topic was heavy enough to stop Tian Zhiliang from speaking any grand words, ”Having saved a few is already not easy.”

”Such trauma is unfortunate, yet meeting you, it’s their fortune amidst misfortune.”

”If.”

Tian Zhiliang didn’t continue the ’if’.

”Director Tian, let’s get back to work, we still have a lot to do.”

Lu Cheng finished, then added, ”Brothers, I’ll order lunch today.”

”Originally, according to our customs here, I’m supposed to invite everyone for a drink tomorrow for my engagement.”

”But my hometown is a bit far, and given our unique nature, we’re planning to celebrate afterward.”

”I feel guilty for not doing it sooner, so I’ll definitely bring my wife over to distribute wedding candies to everyone when the time comes.”

Engagement in Xiangzhou, or in the Tujia and Miao clans, is ceremonial with the giving of wedding sweets to close ones, along with inviting friends and family for a meal. It’s a custom.

”Alright then, you treat us to lunch today.” Tian Zhiliang didn’t dare to oppose Lu Cheng’s proposal.

First, because Lu Cheng was indeed a ’newcomer’, second, because today’s incident left Tian Zhiliang feeling a bit uneasy.

Lu Cheng’s skills were such that even when faced with a family member of a Provincial People’s Hospital professor, he was able to handle it calmly. Such skill?

Not ordinary.

If it had been a different doctor on duty yesterday, perhaps the person wouldn’t have been saved, and Professor Zhu might not have lost his temper; or there might be a slim chance the patient would’ve been saved, but it would definitely not have been handled as smoothly and calmly as Lu Cheng did.

With a lack of concern and no particular tension, he was able to save lives; this level-headedness requires strong capability as support.

Lu Cheng’s individual capability surely surpassed his own.

The medical field is very unique and realistic.

”No matter how excellent, you can’t leave it to fate” doesn’t apply; what applies is ’No matter how excellent, life shines brightly because of you, you possess your own sense of value...’

This day was uneventful, and after Lu Cheng left for the day, he promptly went to pick up the custom-made jewelry before heading home.

Sitting in his car, Lu Cheng was in high spirits, ”Honey, your big pig trotter is headed to your place.”

To be listed on the honor roll brings joy, as does marrying; personal value is the ultimate dream. Lu Cheng’s mood was truly wonderful today.

No matter what, at a minimum, there’s a seventy percent chance a person named Zhu Sangwook is alive because of him.
