System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

Dai Linfang is currently only shadowing, following the shifts of those he wants to learn from, to familiarize himself with and study the rules of emergency surgery.

Although Dai Linfang has a very professional understanding of spleen and pancreas conditions from his background in splenic and pancreatic surgery, his knowledge in the fields of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary specializations appears somewhat lacking.

The manual technique for joint dislocation reduction, a dual sub-specialty of trauma and joint, seems a bit beyond his scope.

However, Dai Linfang’s ability to learn is strong. With Lu Cheng’s explanation, he quickly comprehended how to check the effectiveness of the plain film after reduction, his eyes startled:

”Brother Lu, you even have this talent to showcase your skills in front of others?”

In medicine, there are many specializations. Whether in internal or external medicine, none can showcase their skills as immediately effective, with ailments cured by hand, as the manual reduction techniques.

Most medical treatments require preparation time and an efficacy fermentation period.

”My residency specialization was in trauma surgery,” Lu Cheng responded naturally.

”Though I hadn’t discussed the joint dislocation categorization with Director Wu of Trauma Surgery beforehand, this patient was rejected by the Trauma Surgery Department.”

Dai Linfang thought of a possibility, his face drastically changed: ”Brother Lu, don’t tell me, in the hospital, you have fewer tasks because you lack authority?”

Lu Cheng replied: ”Patients will never be fully treated; the hospital will operate normally without anyone.”

”I don’t want to create more complications; many teachers have very good skills.”

”Previously the County Hospital I was at, was just like that?”

Dai Linfang said: ”But? This shouldn’t be something people our age should be considering?”

Lu Cheng looked strangely at Dai Linfang.

Dai Linfang turned to Lu Cheng, stopped and started speaking a few times: ”My teacher often said that many times, we need defensive medicine.”

”Show two parts of your skill to earn a living, keep seven parts for self-preservation, and leave the remaining part to fate.”

”However?”

”With today’s advanced communication and self-media industries, we encounter countless high-end doctors and ordinary doctors alike.”

”In fact, a real medical student needs ten years or even decades of effort to become an ordinary doctor known to us, just becoming a very mundane and ordinary part of the industry.”

”You... Orthopedic, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Splenic Surgery... this business, is somewhat beyond the syllabus.” Dai Linfang was slightly defenseless.

The more Dai Linfang interacted with Lu Cheng, the more enigmatic he found him.

”Who wrote this syllabus?” Lu Cheng asked.

Dai Linfang: ”...”

”...”

On March 15th, Monday, Lu Cheng had a night shift in the emergency room, free during the day.

The State People’s Hospital administrative building was shielded from sunlight, the chilly incandescent lights appearing quite austere.

Lu Cheng looked at the information as he walked in, beginning to verify the office queue, and upon seeing 1908, he hastily changed his weary expression, walking in with a smile.

”Director Huang, Dean Huang, Dean Xiang.” In the office, there were five people seated, out of whom Lu Cheng recognized only three.

Emergency Department’s Director Huang Haibo, Dean Huang Chunhai, and Vice Dean Xiang Kun.

When the Trauma Center was first proposed, Huang Chunhai was just a vice dean, and Xiang Kun was the director of the Surgical Teaching and Research Department, over seven years ago.

The batch of hospital leadership at that time, retired some, transferred some, and promoted others...

Dean Huang Chunhai was a staunch supporter of establishing the Trauma Center; the center’s cessation was a thorn in his ’administrative construction’, which he naturally wanted to remove.

Huang Haibo stood up to introduce Lu Cheng: ”Lu Cheng, these two are Professor Qu and Professor Dong from the Provincial People’s Hospital Trauma Center.”

”They are experts invited by our hospital management to establish the trauma center!”

”The two professors will be stationed for at least three months to assist and guide our hospital in establishing the trauma center.”

”Professor Qu, Professor Dong, this is Lu Cheng, our Emergency Surgery doctor, and also a very young man.”

”Welcome, Professor Qu, welcome, Professor Dong.” Lu Cheng smiled and stepped forward, shaking hands with the two.

Professor Qu, over fifty years old, scanned Lu Cheng up and down, nodding frequently.

Yet Professor Dong, upon clearly seeing Lu Cheng’s face, was suddenly delighted: ”Is this Lu Cheng the same Lu Cheng?”

Professor Qu looked in surprise at the suddenly vocal Dong Liumeng: ”Xiao Dong, do you know Xiao Lu?”

Dong Liumeng, in his forties, with a smooth, high forehead, replied: ”Professor Qu, this Dr. Lu Cheng is quite something. Last year, at our province’s microsurgery skill competition, he won first place in two tracks, far ahead of others.”

”I remember, many professors from Xiangya Hospital were trying to recruit him, but I heard he was working in Xiangzhou, so he was never formally introduced.”

Dong Liumeng stood up, politely shaking hands with Lu Cheng and formally introducing himself: ”Dr. Lu, I am Dong Liumeng from the Provincial People’s Hospital Trauma Center.”

Seeing Dong Liumeng standing up, Qu Daowen also readily stood and politely shook hands with Lu Cheng: ”Dr. Lu, I’m Qu Daowen from the Provincial People’s Hospital, nice to meet you; let’s exchange more in the future.”

Both Qu Daowen and Dong Liumeng appeared especially sincere.

The courteous behavior of Qu Daowen and Dong Liumeng directly left Huang Chunhai, Huang Haibo, and others bewildered.

They were all somewhat at a loss, standing up awkwardly, unsure how to introduce themselves or open up the conversation.

They just kept watching Lu Cheng’s direction while Huang Chunhai and Xiang Kun also gave part of their attention back to Huang Haibo, inquiring silently about what was going on.

Huang Haibo knew nothing, his heart racing...

Lu Cheng remained quite polite: ”Professor Qu, Professor Dong, in the future, I will trouble both teachers for more guidance.”
